I myself prefer inside forwards with players such as Ribery, Robben, etc. cutting inside to shoot or mix it up in the middle.
However it also depends on the players you have in the club, if you have players such as Bale, Valencia, etc. then wingers are of course the more effective option.
What I usually do with my tactics is I employ full backs (for crossing) to support inside forwards that cut to the middle.

I'm not that big a winger fan, since it seems winger means "bombs down the line and tries to put in a cross". My feeling is that FM gives a bit too much importance to being rated at a specific position and it makes our lives trickier here... e.g. I could play a 4-2-3-1 with the outside two in the attacking line either wider, on the "AML" and "AMR" spot or narrower on "AMC" spots - but for the narrower option I end up with a "winger" with a red dot because they're not listed as an AMC, and that's a little silly, it's not a big difference, just instructing players to play a /bit/ more centrally than out on the line.
Anyway, not that much a fan because the emphasis on crosses means your wingers are expending their too-infrequent touches on a low-percentage play and not often enough getting involved in play. I know you can tweak instructions and I do, but the players in those spots just tend to fade out for long periods. FM also doesn't let you take full advantage of the current fad for "inverted" wingers, where you play a left footed guy on the right and right-footed on the left...

Guess I forgot to add, a true winger makes a fine "impact" substitution, in the way that Spain have used Navas in Euro 2012 so far.
I'm not a fan of wingers and I've.never used them . I play inside forwards to cut inside because it also allows my players to keep possession if the ball instead of just crossing and hoping someone gets on.the end if it
