A View On Santos Laguna

Santos Laguna are a Mexican team who are expected to finish 7th out of 18 in 2011.

The set-up of the Mexican League is a strange one. It has 2 league competitions each year- the Opening Stage and the Closing Stage- so there are basically two league winners each year. To win a stage you must play 17 games and finish in the top 8. You then must play a quarter final then a semi final and finally a final. This happens in each stage.

Santos Laguna a have come 2nd in the 2 last stages but have let go some big players and are expected to finish lower down the league.

Jamie Street is expected to guide the team to at least the quarter-finals in both stages this season.
Key Players

Here are what are thought to be Santos Laguna's key for this season:

Darwin Quintero

Quintero is a quick striker who will be a vital part of the Santos Laguna team and will have to a lot of goals if Laguna are going to well.

Felipe Baloy

Baloy is a rock solid centre-back who will have to perform superbly to ensure Santos Laguna do well this .

Oswaldo Sanchez

Sanchez is Laguna's and captain. He is 37 but will be a vital part of Santos Laguna's team for a few more seasons to come.

All these players will have to be at their best this season if Santos are to have a hope of the league.

The club are now 5th in the table with 2 games gone and have a goal difference of +3.

A poor performance by Santos Laguna still saw them ease through the preliminaries of the North American Champions League and into the group stages. Their only saviour was Oribe Peralta who managed to save them from an embarrassing loss against a team that are somewhat unheard of. No pundits think Laguna will have a chance of qualifying from the group stages after this poor display, even though they put out a second string team.
