Sunderland Sack O’Neil

Poor start, yes, but to sack O’Neil this early on in the season. Those Makems are crazy.

Local Derby in the Cup?

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/171/screenshot20120830at110.png/

The possibility of a mouth-watering 2nd round trophy tie against bitter rivals Forest Green is something to lose sleep over. I wouldn’t be too disappointed with Dover because it’s a tie I know we can win, but £signs are all over this with the prospect of a bumper home tie. Here’s hoping!

FA Trophy Second Round

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/52/screenshot20120830at110.png/

The biggest tie for this club since taking charge is but a month away. I know Dave Hockaday well and rung him up to congratulate. He bluffed that the trophy isn’t high on his priority list but I know he’ll be looking to stuff us.

Our ground share with Cheltenham affords us a far larger capacity than The Lawn so hopefully we’ll get lots of black and white shirts through the turnstiles (or fluorescent green). Nigel could sure do with the cash.

Injury

This is quite a blow. Rom has been exceptional for us at the back. Angus is just about fit enough to come back into defence but I can ill afford any more lay offs in this position. Get well soon Rom

One of our closest away fixtures of the season took us to Worcester. With my lack of rotation in recent weeks my fringe were a touch off colour, so when injury and suspension forced Angus and Mustoe into the team, they’re lack of match fitness really showed.

The first half we managed to survive with little or no attacking threat up front. The only shot we got on target in the whole game came when Lloyd’s excellent run down the byline came to and end to the right of the penalty box . A cute cut back into Comley and we had taken an unlikely lead.

All I was interested in at this point was shutting up shop. That worked until the 83rd minute when a screamer from 40 yards found the net via Nathan Rooney’s boot.

Rooney is one of the better midfielders I’ve come across in this league. As the goal was scored a look to Adie was all that was needed. He’ll be scouted next week.

That takes us to 10 games unbeaten in all competitions and 3 points off the top in second. I don’t know what was up with the lads today, we were flat as a pancake.

The day after Boxing Day and with strict instructions to take it easy on Christmas cake I had the boys in a couple of hours early. We’ve had a good run of late and I wanted to make sure that complancency and the Christmas period didn’t jeapardise th 3 points. Our home form has been so important to where we are in the league and Whaddon road’s reputation as a fortress needed to stay intact.

Whaddon road has a capacity of over 7000, so with an avergage of 300 through the gates for our home games I arranged for the stewards to cordon off just the In2Print Stand so as to excentuate the atmosphere. I want the boys to get the most out of our valuble support.

The boys passed the ball well in the first half and really owned Droylesdon. There were no goals so at half time I changed it up slightly and told the players to standoff and keep possession.

Tomatula really responded to this to when a Droyaldon move broke down he found himself free on the wing. He cut inside and slide ruled to Reilly who slotted it in nicely on 46 minutes.

On 50 minutes a needless tackle by Wales saw receive a second yellow card. Tomatula was then moved to AMC position where e really started to control the game.

A corner on 62 minutes was coolly headed home by Reilly, who was free of his marker.

A stunning Hat trick was completed thanks again to Tomatula’s influence, as his quick thinking surprised the defence with as a back healed through ball left Reilly with little to do but slot it home. The East stand enjoyed this goal the best. A great Christmas present for the fans and a day Reilly won’t soon forget.

As the coffers were dry the coaching staff embarrassingly collected a few quid from each player to organise a Christmas/new year meal for the boys at a local restaurant after the game. It was another great chance to get together and all turned out for food drinks and speeches.

I was shocked to find out that club had disbanded their award scheme a good few seasons ago, so out of my own pocket I bought some trophies to hand out for each catergory.

Although just half the season had past since I took over, I though it was a fantastic way to show my appreciation. The awards were as follows.

GK Award – James Gilpin

An ever present between the sticks, there was only on choice really.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/255/screenshot20120831at105.png/

Defence award – Romauld Bouadji

Although perhaps wouldn’t have been in the first team at the start of the year, he has taken advantage of other injuries and really stepped up. Unlucky to get injured himself in recent games this award would have pleased him.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/31/screenshot20120831at105.png/

Midfield Award – Baroan Tagro

At the start of the season Baroan was not high up on my shortlist of players to get in. But, due to others being hard to nail he was brought in as cover. Keeping out the fast and impressive Lyskov his assits have been crucial to our league position

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/845/screenshot20120831at110.png/

Attack award – Martin Reilly

It was a real coup for the club to get Martin Reilly in. I never thought it would happen and although injured early on, when in the team he has relly been on fire. If we can keep him fit the sky’s the limit.

I was stupid enough to only sign Martin on a one-year deal, after tonight I shall attempt to extend his contract. Hopefully he’ll take this award as a sweetener.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/screenshot20120831at110.png/

Best Young Player u21 – Lewis Thomes

Took a while for him to settle in but he has been very consistant of late. Keeping Devine out of the first team at this young age is a real feat. Exciting times ahead for Lewis.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/36/screenshot20120831at110.png/

Managers player – Yvan Tomatula

Althouogh I should have perhaps gone for one of the others already mentioned, I felt Yvan desered a mention. He asn’t always got a game but over the course of the season we have been experimenting with him and really testing his versatility. He’s responded so well and his attitude had been great. Some great goals and assits.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/822/screenshot20120831at110.png/

We got a little too drunk if I’m honest, so I gave them the morning off and the afternoon’s training was kept light with a few games involved. A really fun Christmas but we’ll have to knuckle down hard tomorrow, Saturday brings a hard away game in Mersey side.

The last day of the year and we were determined to go out with a bang, some of the players are still a bit fuzzy from our monumental Christmas piss up. Our big Scot Wales was the worst of them, he knew he’s be sitting today out due to suspension. Adam would come in again to deputise. With Kenny also suspended and Mullings still injured Ahamed and our coach and team captain Mustoe would come into midfield. Fitzharris would continue at right wing:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/571/screenshot20120831at112.png/

A quiet first half but pleasing in that we kept possession and strung some decent passes together.

It took until 74 minutes for the break through to come. Reilly picks the ball up in midfield and makes a through ball to reach the sterling run of Fitzharris. Fitzharris races to get onto the ball in spite of the on rushing keeper. Sean just gest his toe onto it which megs the oncoming Heaslip. Great goal and his first for the club.

It may have been two had Griffiths not taken down Tomatula through on goal on 83 minutes. Griffiths was duly red carded.

With Vauxhall down to 10 men and in the boys in control, we chose to play down the clock. A great away win.

December in Brief

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/screenshot20120831at114.png/

December was a fantastic month for us, with only 2 points dropped in the league and a win in the trophy we now sit top of the pile. Stalybridge have a couple of games to play but with us 3 point clear it gives us a great platform to push on.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/196/screenshot20120831at115.png/

My player of the month is Martin Reilly. A great hat trick and some important assists made his selection a shoe-in.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/809/screenshot20120831at115.png/

The month ahead is a busy on with 7 games. The most notable the league clash with Stalybridge and the trophy game against the veggie burger eating cocks in Nailsworth. We'll be fielding a full strength against those eco warriors!

Marsh to move on?

One of our transfer-listed players receives an offer that we can’t refuse. If this goes through we be better of to the tune of £130 per week. With only 1 appearance he is deemed surplus to requirements

With only 2 days since the win at Vauxhall and with a very exhaustive Christmas period, I needed to rest a lot of players for our trip to Cambridge. Although odds on to be moved on in the next week, Marsh needed to come in and cover. Fellow tranferlistee Abdellah would also get a game. A much changes side is a risk, but a necessary one.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/18/screenshot20120831at131.png/

Histon came out the blocks fast and on 9 minutes Broderick converts a well worked corner. Our changes are showing.

From then on we really started to settle down and play some football. Just before half time, some well worked interplay from Abdelleh and Wales releases Adam through on goal. Adam does brilliantly to beat the keeper before he’s closed down.

With 20 minutes of great attacking play in the second half it was a kick in the guts to go a goal down. A long clearance from Histon is chased down by Camano. In a rare mistake he blindly steers it back to the keeper. Holman jumps at the chance and latchs onto it to take the lead. A lack of concentration is hard to take especially from on eof our senior players. I’ll be having words with our vice captian.

A spirited effort to get back in the game lead to nothing. It was just one of those days fro the boys. I can’t be too angry with them, it was a good effort considering.

Camano came into the dressing room red faced and apologised to us all each one in turn. I didn’t need to say anything to him he knew the gravity of his mistake. It’s that type of humility and professionalism that I’m looking for in this team, I could do with 10 more like him.

With some of the usual suspects back on track its time to get back to winning ways.
Adcock comes into the team for the knackered Fitzharris, and Devine comes in for Thomas. Our squad has been truly tested this month with the 5th game in two weeks.

Hopefully the game at Histon was just a blip. This game is the first in stretch of 4 home games culminating in the all-important local derby in the trophy. Let put his fortress to good use.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/18/screenshot20120831at131.png/

11 minute gone and Devine floats a high looping corner to the back post which is met by Angus’ boot. A quick game of pinball ensues before it dribbles over the line. 1-0.

On 30 minutes Eastwood get one back. Morris is aloud to dribble down the right wing. Angus is marshalling but fails to close down. A superb cross between back line and Gilpin allow Know to steal in and toe poke past our keeper. A soft goal.

We stuck to the task and were rewarded 8 minutes later by a goal to remember. Some nicely worked passing advances through the middle and Tagro comes in side o receive the ball. On the edge of the area and with no one closing down he uses the pace of the ball to chip the ball over the keeper. The East stand goes wild. For me, the goal of the season so far and a shoe in for goal of the month. Get in!

On the stroke of half time a set piece from Devine finds Angus again in a smilar position. This time he foregoes the pinball on volleys a rocket past the keeper. We are motoring now.

Half time done with we score a 4th. Reilly goes on a mazy run and is shepherded wide. He decides not to beat his man and curls the ball round him towards the box. Tagro, who is simply flying today, taps it in. magical.

Eastwood get a corner on 60 mins and scrape one back. Tagro takes a knock in the process, he’s had a good game but he’s got to come off. Lyskov fills in.

On 67 minutes Valentino chops down Reilly through on goal. He doesn’t even wit for the card. We’re now a man up.

With Substitute Tomamtula now on the picth he wanted to get in on the action. Reilly chooses the left wing to dribble down this time and on 90th minute Yvan accepts the gift of Reilly’s perfect cross to make it 5. 304 fans in the East stand have been treated to a real display today. Great work lads.

Getting back to winning ways has its cost. Wales being injured out will rock us, especially with the Trophy coming up. I was counting on his old head to help us in that tie.

3 days after our win at home to Eastwood, Stalybridge travel to Cheltenham to face our in form side. Stalybridge are tied with us with two games in hand. We could really use a result here to try and pull away.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/411/screenshot20120831at140.png/

The squad still a bit jaded, Whiteley and Adam come into the team to replace the tired Mullings and the injured Wales.

Incidentally our squad is a man lighter as Marsh completed his move to Vauxhall. Nigel will be glad of the move. He told me before the game that we are now £100,000 in debt. I feel sorry for our chairman. Although a wealthy man I don’t think he has the money to carry a football club with a debt that size. We need to be a success for him this season, we owe it to him. Come on my boys!

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/802/screenshot20120831at135.png/

9 minutes in Tagro takes a whack to the head and needs to replaced. Not a good start

Stalybridge enjoy a large proportion of possession in the first half without really threatening our goal. Long shots are the only thing we can manage until an angus long ball out of defence on the stroke of half time beats the high line of the Stalybridge defence. With Adam and Meynell in a foot race Adam’s speed prevails and he takes a couple of touches before slotting it home.

50 minutes gone and Comley is our second injury and needs to be replaced. Mustoe comes on.

WTF (as the kids say) Adam has scored a goal to remember. 61 minutes and Adam picks up the ball on the half way line he skips past two defenders before slotting past the keeper. Sunning goal. 2 – 0 up and that makes our half century of goals for the season.

Sweet lord he strikes again. Tomatula links up with Adam and with defenders in his wake he strikes early to make it three. A better Hat trick you will not see! 77 minutes gone.

Full time arrives and our second best crowd of the season goes. A suberb collection of strikes from Adam is the difference in an even game. Stalybridge have games in hand but the three point we lead by at the moment is all that matters. A play off place is looking like a reality as we pull away by 12 points from 6th place Nuneaton. We face them next.

I had no idea of the severity of Comley’s injury! Out for more than 6 months means he will not feature for the rest of our campaign. Mustoe will come in to replace him but Comley will certainly be missed. He’s been a silent force for us in midfield charged with the thankless task of mopping up just in front of our defence. He’s done it beautifully, keeping Neil out of the team in the process. Tagro is also layed up for a more manageable 2 weeks.

Our 7th game in 4 weeks I s beginning to take its toll.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/100/screenshot20120831at143.png/

With three First team players crook, our up coming Trophy game is looking increasingly harder. Today Nuneaton travelled to see us and I couldn’t afford to rest enyone, however much I want to beat Forest Green, getting out of thi league is now our priority.:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/839/screenshot20120831at144.png/

As it stood I did have to rest Fitzharris and Lyskov, they faced late fitness tests and they were just too tired to field. Devine and Adcock would come in to replace.

13 minutes in and delicious corner from our late replacement Devine hit a Nuneaton defender and dribbled over the line to put us a goal ahead.

On 23 minutes Adam makes a poor back pass that moore intercepts. He tries an audacious first time lob which leaves Gilpin for dead. Brilliant goal. 1 – 1

49 minutes gone and after a steam of Gloucester chances Mustoe whips a beautiful ball in that flummoxes all involved and rebounds off Albrighton for our second gifted goal of the game. 2 -1

The curretntly transfer listed Adcock seemed to be pleading to stay as a wonderfully lofted free kick finds Angus at the far post who nods into an empty net. A two goal cussion going into the last 30 minutes.

4 minutes later Adam cuts aball inside the area to Reilly who shapes to shoot. Before connection Agostini brings him down. Penalty.

Mustoe coolly converts. 4 -1. That’s how it stayed

Confidence is soaring, we are beating the inform teams with ease at the moment. I need to keep this mentality for the duration of the season. If I do, we win the Conference League North, it’s as simple as that.

Stalybridge won their game so they still trail us by 3 points with two games in hand.

I gave a rousing fulltime team talk congratulating them on a superb series of results. I gave the boys the next training session off. On Friday the coaching staff would go about the task of getting the team prepped for our 2nd round FA Trophy match against neighbours Forest Green Rovers.
