After years of Arsenal playing “third fiddle” to Manchester United and Chelsea, and in the past season – Manchester City, Arsenal have announced that long-term manager Arsene Wenger has left the club after 16 years at the helm.
Speaking this afternoon Arsenal Chairman, Peter Hill-Wood said: “We’ve had some brilliant years under the guidance of Arsene, including winning the Premier League in ’98, ’02 and who could forget the Invincibles of 2004? Although, myself and the board decided that hoping to finish in a Champions League qualifying spot isn’t good enough for a club like us, with such rich history. We will have more on the appointment of a new manager in the coming week.”
The decision has brought some criticism from the Arsenal hierarchy so close to the Premier League starting again next month, while the bookmakers are already taking bets on who will take over from Wenger. The favourite at this point being former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. While the rumour mill is working over-time, and the word floating around some online communities is that the Arsenal board are looking to appoint a former player.
