12 years ago one of the most promising 18 year olds came through the ranks at La Masia and was touted as Barcelona's future captain and then the hype stopped... The boys name was Alfredo Goncalves and he disappeared from European football for a long time, scouts couldn't find him. The rumour is that bad-behaviour and an uncontrollable temper apparently lead to his demise at Barcelona and he was sent by his family to live in America with his Grandfather and Grandma. Playing college soccer he was content getting an education but 'Alf' was set to be drafted in 2003, at the age of 21. However the coveted youngster pulled out, throwing teams' plans into turmoil, especially New England Revolution... his favoured team.
Why would a player that seemed to have the world at his feet throw his chance away?
Goncalves Takes Revs managerial role
Alfredo Goncalves has returned to the world of football, as a manager. The 30 year old Spaniard grew up playing total football until he moved to America for unknown reasons... but Goncalves has completed his coaching badges and is now ready for his first job in management.
When he met the media he was asked several questions about his mysterious football career, or lack of it...
"Where have you been Mr Goncalves?"
"What makes you think you can crack it at management?"
and
"What REALLY happened at Barcelona?
I've been In America.
Why do you think I can't?
I was chucked out of the youth team on the eve of my first start for the club, you do not need to know the reasons.
