Pre-Season
After being demoted to the Scottish Third Division, Rangers FC turned to novice manager Matt Johnson. Fully aware of the situation at the club, Johnson made only one signing during the summer, snapping up experienced striker James McFadden. Rangers first pre-season friendly saw them beat St Mirren 3-1 thanks to Andy Little's brace and a goal from Dean Shiels.
McFadden scored his first goal for the club in their second friendly, a 4-0 win over Falkirk which saw Ross Perry, Lee McCulloch and Lewis MacLeod also score. The Gers rounded off pre-season with another 4-0 win, this time over Auchinleck with McFadden, McCulloch (x2) and MacLeod again scoring
August
Rangers began life in Division 3 with a 10-0 annihilation of Peterhead. MacLeod, McCulloch, Kyle Hutton, Shiels and Chris Hegarty scored in the first half, with MacLeoad and Shiels scoring a second, McFadden hitting a hat-trick and Kyle Hutton netting in the second half.
The club's first away game proved much tougher, as Dean Shiels' 90th minute strike gave them a 2-1 win at Stirling. Cowdenbeath were then swept aside 9-0 in the 2nd Round of the Challenge Cup at Ibrox before another 10-0 win, this time over East Stirlingshire.
It was inevitable that defeat would come at some point and this happened in the 2nd Round of the League Cup at Raith. Rangers recovered from 2-0 down to level but Stuart Anderson's goal with 9 minutes to go saw the hosts through.
The month was rounded off on a positive note at Berwick. Rangers stormed into a 3-0 lead before Neil Janczyk and Darren Lavery brough Berwick right back into the match. However, the visitors weren't to be denied as Lee McCulloch's second of the game in the 90th minute gave Rangers a 4th win in 4 games
