How can I get my game window'd so I can see my menu bar with start etc on it? I know there is a way through preferences in the game but it always says non compatable so wont allow me to do it. 
Yea try that it should work, you may have to quit out of the game lower your desktop rez to what ever the game is (800x600 or 1024x768) reload the game try it and if it works you should then beable to change it back to whatever you wanted originally. I play windowed 1280x1024.
right click on the desktop shortcut, and in the target line, at the end after the ("), put -small_screen -windowed
