Saturday 1st December 2012 Chester v Worcester

Starting XI – Danby, McGinn, Linwood, Horan, Baynes, Williams, Brown, Phelan, Sarcevic, Hankin, Pericard SUBS – Powell, O’Connor, L Turner, N Turner, Jarman

Tough game to start off the month, against Worcester. Who sat 4th in the league before the game. In a nervy first half neither side could get the ball down and string a good amount of passes together. The only clear cut chance was when Scott Brown shot just wide from outside the box.

At half time I encouraged the team to play slightly more direct as we had a slight height advantage and I reckoned we could take advantage, and take advantage we did.

In what was an amazing second half of football for my November player of the month Vince Pericard, he opened the scoring in the 57th minute. Seven minutes later he got his second, an easy tap in from a few yards out. Then on the 74th minute he scored another brace, finishing the rout and completely ending the match as a competition.

Final score Chester 4-0 Worcester.

Pericard blitzes record for goals in a game

The four goals scored by Vincent Pericard for Chester at home to Worcester has set new team and Blue Square Bet North record highs.

The previous Chester record was held by Marc Williams, who scored two at home to Sheffield in the English FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.

The previous Blue Square Bet North record was held by Charlie Collins, who scored three at home to Hinckley in 2012.

League One side Tranmere has loaned out 18 year old center back Chris Lynskey to Blue Square Bet North side Chester.

On the loan signing Chester’s Manager Warren Fairbairn had this to say:

“Chris Lynskey is a promising young talent with bags of potential. We needed some cover in our defence and I believe Chris can slot in and help us out whilst getting some playing experience under his belt”

This comes alongside the news that Chester have terminated Danny Williams loan contract and sent him packing back to Kendal, with the general feeling that with the quality of left wingers already at the club, he was surplus to requirements.

Saturday 8th December Brackley v Chester

Starting XI – Danby, McGinn, Linwood, Lynskey, Baynes, Williams, Gudger, Phelan, Sarcevic, Hankin, Pericard SUBS - Powell, Horan, Brown, N Turner, Jarman

A second clash in a row against a team ranked 4th in the league, as Brackley took Worcester’s place last week after we beat them emphatically. Two changes from last week’s side, new loan signing given a start in place of the tired Horan, and Gudger taking Browns place on the left wing.

Two minutes into the game and we score a tidy opening goal, with Hankin getting the ball out wide and walked through Brackley’s defence and slotted the ball nicely past the home side’s keeper. Brackley almost hit back instantly with a shot saved only by the crossbar. It didn’t take long for them after that to get the equaliser in the 10th minute.

Level at half-time I had to come up with something, so I sent them back out in a 4-4-2 defensive formation, with the intend of hitting Brackley on the counter, as we weren’t seeing our trademark passing style of recent games working today.

After a hard fought second half, we walked away with a share of the spoils. I wasn’t too disappointed however, as 4 points off of top table teams in the league was great going.

Final score Brackley 1-1 Chester

Wednesday 12th December 2012 Chester v Oxford City

Starting XI - Starting XI – Danby, McGinn, Linwood, Lynskey, Baynes, Williams, Brown, Phelan, Sarcevic, Hankin, Pericard SUBS - Powell, Horan, Gudger, N Turner, Jarman

Just the one change for this match with Scott Brown back in the starting line-up with Gudger moving to the bench.

We started brightly and even had the ball in the back of the net on the 9th minute, but it was disallowed for offside.

A few minutes later however Pericard hits the mark to give us the lead. Oxford fought back though and pulled it back to level peggings in the 25th minute. Five minutes later, Ashley Williams turns up and hits a wonderful strike from just outside the box to put us back in front.

A disastrous second half for my team as we could not string a pass together and we were beaten in all areas of the pitch in quality. Luckily for us though Oxford didn’t have their shooting boots on and we just about held on to maintain our win undeservedly.

I was livid with that poor display and I let my players know it at full time.

Final score Chester 2-1 Oxford City

Drama at the Deva Stadium

Chester’s Wes Baynes has openly criticised manager Warren Fairbairn for his comments in the dressing room during Chesters 2-1 Blue Square Bet North victory over Oxford City.

The full-back remarked that he felt Fairbairn had made a few errors of judgement in his team-talk which had done nothing to help the team.

Chester’s manager Warren Fairbairn was unavailable to comment.
Nice start :) hopefully we won't have as much bad luck with this one!

I was sitting in my office Thursday morning waiting for the lads to come in for their light warm down session after yesterdays game with Oxford City. I wasn't going to let them off too lightly as we had put in a terrible show in the second half of that game and I was going to make it utterly clear to them that we were lucky to hold onto our narrow lead.

I'm in no way a confrontational person, but I needed to make them realise if we carried on like that then we would end up back where we started when I first came to the club. As I was reviewing our tactics, and training regimes the phone in my office suddenly rang.

It was the chairman. Chris Pilsbury. I answered.

WF: Hello Sir, it's unusual for you to call, what's up?

CP: Good Morning Warren, I knew you'd be in early as always. I called to see what you are going to do about the Wes Baynes situation. You have made good progress since taking over but this issue needs to be addressed before it turns bad and affects the mentality in the dressing room.

WF: Woah Chris slow down, what Wes Baynes situation?

CP: So you haven't heard?

WF: Heard what?

CP: Well if you log onto the Non-League Paper's website there is a update stating that Wes has openly criticised you for your outburst against the team after yesterdays match. You need to make sure the issue is resolved and no further negative press appears about my club and that the players are fully committed to the teams cause. I'll let you handle it but if things escalate then I will be stepping in. Call me back when you have news for me.

He hung up just like that. He was pretty irate I could tell by his tone of voice, and me? I was shocked. I had heard nothing about this. I quickly checked the net and low and behold it was all there just like Chris had said.

I was saddened. Wes has been a crucial player for us, putting in some fantastic performances and I had done nothing but shower him with praise in training and even in press conferences. I couldn't believe that he would go behind my back and criticise me to the papers. If this is how I am going to be treated, then no more Mr Nice Guy.

I could hear some commotion down the hall, the players had started to arrive for training and were heading to the changing rooms. I poked my head out my office door and shouted down the hall "WES!!" The Linwood and Pericard turned to answer and said he was already getting changed. I asked them to send him straight to my office when he is ready, they nodded and walked off.

I slumped back in my chair, heart pounding in my chest, adrenaline rising by the second and small beads of sweat starting to appear on my brow. I HATED confrontations but I knew it was part and parcel of the job and no matter how anxious I felt before a situation like this, I knew I'd be able to hold my nerve... There was a tap on the door. "Come in" I said.

Wes Baynes sauntered into my office and sat on the chair opposite mine and smiled, "Morning Gaffer you wanted to see me?"

"Yes" I replied coldly "And may I add you have some nerve sitting in front of me with a smile on your face"

"What do you mean?" He asked, but by the way he immediately sat up and stiffened he definitely knew what was coming.

I started "You sit there, grinning, after going behind my back to the press to criticise me? What an insult!" He opened his mouth to speak but I didn't pause to let him, I'd started and I was on a roll now. "I have not long been at this club, but with my new schedule and training along with the teams hard work on the pitch we have turned things around. But this is unacceptable! This will not be tolerated! I expect a certain level of professionalism from my players and if there is a problem then you bloody well come to me and say it to my face!" He tried to interrupt again but I kept going.

"I am absolutely disgusted by your conduct and there will be severe consequences should it happen again! I don't want you to bore me with an explanation. I know what I saw out on the pitch yesterday and if I say it wasn't good enough then it wasn't good enough! Now get back out there with the rest of the squad for training. I will meet you out there shortly. Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes Sir, crystal clear..." He muttered as he got up and rushed out the door.

I think I got through to him. At least I hope I did. Wes is a player I need to be fully focused on our task in hand. I felt bad for shouting at him and once he'd left the room my nerves went back into overdrive. I'd let him know later on that he would still be in my team and that I expect a response from him out on the field against Hinckley on Saturday. We shall see what happens. Hopefully word will spread that I'm not a man to be crossed and I won't have to deal with another situation. worse case scenario now is that I have provided a catalyst for heads to drop and results to slip, but we shall see.

I headed out of my office and went to start our training session, I was relived to see the squad having a kick about and laughing and joking amongst themselves. Amongst those smiles was Wes. I think I got through.
Great update mate! It's nice to see a fellow LLM story here :P
