Ben Greenhalgh won footballs next star in early 2010, gaining a six month contact with professional outfit Inter Milan. However since then he has fallen down the ranks rapidly, going back to the Ryman Premier League to play for Maidstone United just last season. Despite this severe confidence bump, he has recently made a return to professional football with Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C. Footballs Next Star - The beginning of a new journey
Jose Mourinho “This young man has the potential to go far in the world of football, he’s already a great player, and I believe he can become even better”
Sky Sports News: “A player who is extremely similar to Ronaldo, he has the skills, he has the wag, and now he has the professional contract”.
I remembered the words that I had heard just a few years ago, and shed a tear as I realised these were dramatic exaggerations, these people never believed in me; they did it to make me look good. Footballs next Star was a TV Show, a talent show, and yes I may have one it and gained my professional contract with Inter Milan; but where have I gone since then? The contract only lasted six months, and after those months were over Inter spat me out and never looked back. They said these things to hype me up, to make me seem amazing; for the public who were watching the series; but they never believed the things they were saying, I am simply one fish in the footballing ocean, and every single one wants a contract like me.
I remembered what Jamie Redknapp had said to me in the latter stages of Footballs Next Star, “ You need something to make yourself unique, something that puts you one step ahead “. That was when it hit me, I like running with the ball for a reason, I like controlling the game. I like to attack. I may have only been contracted to Inverness for a few weeks, but I had to act on my instincts, I had to make a change to the way people consider me in football. And that is when I vowed, “One day I will meet Jose Mourinho again, and on that day I will control the game, in more way than one”.
