BREAKING: Zola leaves Watford

News is breaking now that ex-Italian and Premier League footballer Gianfranco Zola has left Watford. The definite problem is unknown, although it is believed that Zola has resigned.

After Watford's unfortunate defeat to Crystal Palace in the Championship Playoff Final last season, Italian Gianfranco Zola has tendered his resignation at the club. In a statement released by his (Zola's) agent, he said that it was a 'sad time for Gianfranco', and that he is 'extremely upset at having to leave, but does wish the club all the best for the future.'



Watford are yet to release a statement, although it is believed that they will announce a new manager within the coming days.

The news comes as a shock to many Watford fans, who were all devastated last season after their playoff defeat, as they saw Zola as the man to lead them back to the Premier League, after a lenghty holiday from the the top division.

BREAKING: Tony Coton unveiled as new Watford manager

Tony Coton, who played over 250 times for Watford between 1984 and 1990 has been unveiled as the club's new boss. He was chosen to replace Gianfranco Zola, after the Italian resigned from the club the other day. Coton, who also played for both Manchester clubs during his career, has reportedly been handed a contract until the end of the season, with a relatively low wage of £7,500 per week.

Tony Coton was a goalkeeper who made over 500 appearances in the Football League and Premier League. His best time of his career was a 12 year period between 1984 and 1996, where he played consistently in between the sticks for Watford and Manchester City respectively. He was unfortunately forced out of the number one shirt at Manchester City by injury, and left to join City's rivals Manchester United for a record fee between the two clubs. But Coton only lasted another 6 months in Manchester, where he failed to make an appearance for Manchester United, and left to Tyneside, where he joined Sunderland. Coton made ten appearances in three years, before ending his career after breaking his leg in 5 different places.



Coton failed to make an appearance for England, but did play for England B in 1992. The goalkeepers career was not over yet though, and in 2004 he came out of retirement to join Hereford United during a goalkeeper crisis: he did not play for them.

Since properly retiring, Coton worked as a keeper coach for Manchester United, and stayed there from 1997-2007, where his job was cut short due to knee injuries preventing him from taking part in training sessions. He now works as a football agent.



It is also being reported that Coton has asked for extra funds, as he believes that his Watford squad can push for a title challenge.

First team squad

Finally I had arrived at the club. A place where I was once so used to, but had rarely been here in recent years. We were having our first training session on the pitch at Vicarage Road, and I was up in my office studying the team report. We had a very strong squad, but one problem struck me: we had a very thin squad. Last season there were all the loanees from Udinese and Granada, but all the players have gone back to their clubs, so we now have a small squad.

I had still managed to pick out a few who I believed were going to be key to our success this year.

Manuel Almunia

Having had a slight fall from grace, after a series of horrific blunders for Arsenal a few seasons back, he joined the club last summer, and he is an experienced footballer in the Premier League and Champions League. Hopefully he will be a strong asset towards the team.

Almen Abdi

In Almen we have another very good player for the level we are at, and I am suprised to not see him in the Premier League. He has pretty decent stats all round and will become a main part of our plans.

Diego Fabbrini

A very good winger from Italy, who is pretty quick and a good dribbler of the ball. Hopefully he will become a good backup striker, or somebody to play in behind the striker.

Main tactic

Our main tactic is one that is very strong in midfield, and we will hopefully use the quality we have here to full effect.
