With Christian Abbiati retiring and Marco Amelia gone, Zambrotta has made young Mattia Perin his first signing as Milan boss.
It’s been another crazy day for new
Milan boss
Gianluca Zambrotta on a day of sadness for supporters as long-serving veteran goalkeeper
Christian Abbiati announced that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the season.
35 year old Abbiati has been at the coveted Italian club since 1998 and has spent much of his career as first-choice goalkeeper, only really spending much time on the bench during the Brazilian
Dida’s time at the club, a period which saw Abbiati gain just 4 Italy caps and have loan spells at Juventus, Torino and Atletico Madrid.
However, in recent seasons Abbiati has really come of his own, proving that some players really do get better with age, and so today’s announcement will surely be upsetting for Milan fans, who have seen their man play over 300 matches between the sticks for the San Siro club. Abbiati wrote on his own, personal website:
It is with great regret that I today announce my retirement from professional football at the end of the season. As distraught as I am that this season will indeed be my last, I felt that the time was right to finally call it a day and allow me to give my body a rest. I would like to express my greatest of thanks to all my fans worldwide who have really supported me throughout my entire career in Italy and during my short spell in Spain, I love you all and just want to say that I will one day return to Milan – be that as a coach, a manager or just a fan, I will never forget this club – it leaves a lump in my throat just thinking about all the great memories I have enjoyed here.
It’s been a wonderful ride,
Christian Abbiati.
Thousands have already taken to social networking sites to pay tribute to the well-loved goalkeeper – even though he still has one more year of playing at the club to look forward to. In an interview with
Sky Sport Italia, Gianluca Zambrotta was quick to pay his own tributes to the long-serving goalkeeper, quoted as saying
”He’s always been a prominent figure in the side and his retirement will leave a big hole in our line-up”.
Backup goalkeeper
Marco Amelia also looks poised to leave the club, with a €1,500,000 deal reportedly agreed with Parma, subject to a medical. If the move does go through, Amelia will take a significant wage cut of
almost a third.
However, it was not all bad news for the Milan faithful, as fellow goalie
Mattia Perin, 19, arrived at the San Siro today for a medical, with Milan agreeing a €4.8M deal with Genoa for the young ‘keeper’s services. Italy U-21 star Perin has previously spent time on loan at Padova and Pescara and looks set to become backup to Abbiati for the veteran’s final season at the club.
Many have speculated that Perin, former Italy star Zambrotta’s first signing, is in to become the successor to Christian Abbiati once he finally hangs up his boots. If this is true, Zambrotta is taking a huge gamble on the little-experienced teenager, but if Perin gets even a few games this season he may just start to show signs of improvement, ahead of his big step-up to Number 1.

Luca Antonini and Mathieu Flamini are the other two players to have departed Milan so far this summer
Meanwhile, defender
Luca Antonini has finally departed Milan after 12 years, many of which were spent as a fringe player. Antoni, who had no less than
eight loan spells during his time with AC Milan, will link up with former teammate Amelia at Parma, agreeing a €2.3M deal and taking a large wage cut to push through the move.
Mathieu Flamini has also left the former Italian Champions, himself taking a 25% wage cut to sign for Bologna. The former Arsenal man spent the entirety of last season injured and only managed just 2 appearances, so with just a year remaining on his contract, Milan will be pleased to have received a potential fee of €4,800,000 for the Frenchman.
The transfers will certainly not stop there, however.
