FA Cup First Round – Nantwich vs Rotherham United
Before discussing the much anticipated (ha) first round tie against Nantwich there is some transfer news with me conducting a bit of early business. I had shown interest in Jonathan Obika in my days at HSV as I thought he was a player with some potential but if he was to have joined me at the German club I don’t think he would have been good enough. However, he definitely has the ability and quality to do well in league two. It was great when I saw that he had been released by Spurs as he was never going to break into their first team with the likes of Defoe, Adebayor and Toivonen.
I jumped into action and offered Obika the best contract that we could afford. The contract will see him on less than he was at Spurs but at the promise of a wage increase after 30 league games saw him sign on the dotted line. Jonathan has made a good impression with him scoring two goals on his debut and then leading the line against Nantwich in the first round of the FA Cup.

The match was pretty plain sailing with the semi-professional club not concerning us too much as they didn’t create many clear chances. Instead it was great to see our team put away four excellently worked chances and it is always good to see different scorers on the scoreboard. What made the goals even more significant was the fact that Sercombe, Ainsworth and Winchelow all scored their first ever goal for Rotherham United.
A number of youngsters came into the squad in order to give the first team a rest with more vital league games coming up what will be a very busy month. Lance Donald at right back put in a solid debut for the first team and he will be a player that I will want to use in future cup games. Michael O’Connor, our captain, put in yet another outstanding performance and was well deserved of his 9.0 rating and it was difficult to decide between himself and Sercombe as to who should have received the man of the match award.
I went into the game confident of coming away with a result and this faith in the players paid off greatly. We are a realistic club who are only expected to reach the second round of the tournament so it is brilliant that the club have achieved their first expectation of the season. The second round will see us pipped against league rivals Exeter City.
