The Travels of the Past
The travels of the past. What does that mean?
I had first joined this fantastic club in 2012, with no money to spend but a good group of dedicated players. I had taken over a team that was full of youth, producing talent left, right and centre. But there were also players there that were well past it and were living of the thousands of euros they were being paid, money that in my opinion they didn’t deserve!
I had a no nonsense attitude when I took over and I made sure everyone knew about it. The first ever team report that was layed out on my table by Bruno was given a thorough seeing to and a lot of analysis went in to the decisions that followed. I remember sitting there looking at players like Lisandro Lopez, Bafetimbi Gomis and Yoann Gourcuff and thinking we aren’t going to be a top club if we keep players like this at the club. I saw youngsters like Alexandre Lacazette, Maxime Gonalons, Yassine Benzia and I knew they were the future of the club.
One of the very first acts as the new Olympique Lyonnais manager was to remove the deadwood and that is what I did. The travels of the past will show us where those players have gone since leaving this club and what they have achieved, whilst we have gone on to become European Champions twice and league champions 4 times and treble winners more than once.
With Carlos Fierro joining Stoke and Tom Ince joining PSG, it remains to be seen whether either of them will suffer a similar fate to those that have gone before them. One would not hope for such a failure for a former player but it shows just how strong Olympique Lyonnais is and the future is brightest for this grand club.
