Chelsea FC - Champions of Europe 2011/12

For Chelsea, winning its first Champions League title ever, made Saturday the finest day in the club's history. But moving forward, it could have interesting implications for the team. And frankly, for the rest of the Premier League as well. Will it affect the transfer window? Will jobs be kept or lost over the result?

The most obvious result from Chelsea's win is that Tottenham is now pushed out of Champions League qualification. Despite finishing fourth in the league, Chelsea's victory gives them an automatic berth in next year's tournament. I guess you could consider the Spurs spurned in this case. As for Newcastle, they've lost their automatic bid to play in the Europa League, as Tottenham earned that right. Neither side can be very pleased with Chelsea's win yesterday.

And that brings us to the manager, Roberto Di Matteo ...

After taking over a floundering Chelsea team from Andre Villas-Boas in February, Di Matteo turned the tide and made this team into a Champions League winner. That should count for something, like another season at the helm. Of course, the possibility remains that Di Matteo could actually remain as an interim skipper if Roman Abramovich has his eye on a bigger prize. We all know he has earned another season as manager, but does Roman Abramovich feel he is the right man to make the London club a top European Club as the likes of Real Madrid, AC Milan & Liverpool ???

Roman Abramovich announces changes at Chelsea FC

After yesterday's Champions League & FA Cup celebrations in London, Roberto was up the next day bright and early to discuss his future at the club he had just made history with. He was in Roman's office for a few hours but failed to convince the Russian billionaire owner to keep him on. Di Matteo was also wary of the high expectations that were to be put upon the man in charge after winning that Champions League trophy two nights before, and was happy to make way for his successor. After all he had just taken over a club that was going nowhere in the 2011/12 campaign and led them to a Domestic & European cup triumph. But not just any club, the club that he ended his career with, making 119 appearances in a six year period. He knows he will be always remembered this way, a great footballer, and a true legend now, after what he did in his short tenure as 'caretaker manager'. He leaves Stamford Bridge with his head held high, proud of what he has achieved, and will always be loved by the Chelsea fans, some of who still can't get their heads around what has just happened.

The New Chelsea Manager

In an official statement, later that afternoon, Chelsea FC announce that long time friend of the Abramovich family, Chris Borg will be the man to take the club through its next steps in becoming the best club in the world. Journalists and fans alike are shocked that the club have overlooked other experienced targets such as Fabio Capello, Guus Hiddink and especially Barcelona favourite Josep Guardiola. Although the new man has never managed a club professionally, it is rumoured that he had a legendary status on the simulation game FM12, and the board have full confidence that this is the right choice. Chris will be having his first first interview in a few days where he will discuss his aims, beliefs & most importantly, what he plans to do in his transfer window. This is currently a hot subject, and one of Chris' first jobs is going to be whether he will be able to convince Didier Drogba to stay after his contract runs out in a few weeks, that is, if he wants him to stay.

Chris Borg took his first interview today, in which he discussed several aspects of his new job. The fans will be pleased to know that he started off by promising Passion, Trophies & Football as his main objectives where he explained that he is going to make some very important signings in the coming days which will be the start of this new revolution. He also promised that he will be closely monitoring our Youths' development and ensuring they experience some first team football and will also be retaining most of the staff & players. John Terry & Frank Lampard where also present, as Chris explained how they will remain the captains and leaders of this new energetic & hungry team he is looking to build. The Chelsea fans seemed happy again, although in the back of their minds they still wanted an answer to the one question above all others, What about Didier Drogba? There was no mention of him in the interview but later on in that same week everyone was to know his destiny.

Good start, hope this turns out as good as your fm 12 story was

New manager Chris Borg stands here alongside some of his new signings, he has already spent the Champions League prize money, around £80 million on players so far, and word around Stamford Bridge is that Roman has given him an extra £30 million to spend to further strengthen the squad. Chelsea have already been linked with strikers Edinson Cavani, Stevan Jovetic & Falcao but Chris confirmed that although these are all top players, he had not thoroughly looked at all available options and will be analyzing his current squad first before dipping into the transfer market again. Nonetheless he shall definitely be looking for a replacement for Didier Drogba. We will catch up with Chris again nearer deadline day to have a look at any further transfer activity, how preseason went & look at his tactical approach for the 2012/13 campaign keeping in mind the Blues will be extra busy this season with the Community Shield, Super Cup, & Club World Cup to look forward to.

Today several Chelsea players have accepted new contract offers with a year left on their current deals. The only player not to be offered a new deal is French midfielder Florent Malouda, speculations now have been confirmed that he is on his way out of Stamford Bridge after a successful career with the Blues. The question is; will he serve his final year or will another club come in and get him for a decent transfer fee? Florent has recently shared publicly that he wouldn't say no to a return back home to France. Some of the most notable transfers offered today were:

Daniel Sturridge - signed a three year deal at 80k p/w
Ashley Cole - signed a two year deal at 150k p/w
Frank Lampard - signed a two year deal at 150k p/w
Paulo Ferreira - signed a two year deal at 40k p/w

Malouda leaves Chelsea

32 year old French midfielder, Florent Malouda returns back to his country as he signs a two year deal with giants Paris St.Germain, leaving Chelsea for a reported fee of just over £2 million. Malouda initially signed for the Blues in 2007 from Olympique Lyon and was a prominent member of the squad throughout the years, he has though found himself sidelined since the arrivals of some of the younger midfielders Chelsea have brought in. All in all this is a good deal for both parties.

As Florent departs, this week saw the welcoming of some new faces. An additional three coaches have been brought in as backroom staff to help out with the current training setup.

Alex Gibson - will work with youngsters, has a good eye for judging potential.
Angel Vales - spanish tactical & technical genious.
Andy Welsh - everyday coaching & motivational expert.
