Jesus resigns as Benfica manager

Benfica have announced the shock resignation of manager Jorge Jesus on their official website. Although Benfica have won the league title and finished second twice in the Liga ZON Sagres in Jesus' three years in charge, the fans have been divided over Jesus' management style and Jesus has decided to walk away from the club.

However, reliable sources from inside the club have told Sky Sports that Jesus had a massive bust up with the club president, Luís Filipe Vieira, over club bonuses and that had led to Jesus tendering his resignation to the club late last night. The board are said to be shocked at Vieira's attitude towards Jesus during the bust up and have warned him that this incident could plunge the club into crisis.

Benfica will now be on the lookout for a new manager, with Frank Rijkaard, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Carlos Queiroz in the mix, with Benfica legend Rui Costa an outside favourite for the job.
Splendid start!

The Messiah returns

Benfica have announced the return of former player and club legend Rui Costa as the new manager of the club. Rui Costa, 40, had been the director of football at Benfica before Jorge Jesus shockingly resigned from the club, and he has beat out the likes of Frank Rijkaard and Luiz Felipe Scolari to the job.

However, rumours emerging from Lisbon suggest that Benfica had been in advanced negotiations with Rijkaard over the managerial role until talks grounded to a halt over financial terms. However, the hiring of Rui Costa will delight Benfiquistas as the club looks to bring back its glory days.

Rui Costa will be on a £18.5 p/w contract until the end of the 2012/13 season.
Can I just say, you need to sort out your code so the post box doesn't end up broken. I've fixed it twice now, and I'm not going to do it on every post.

For example, this is what you put:

Text

As you can see, this is all mixed up, and why the post doesn't look right.

This is what you should post instead:

Text

If you do this it will make the post not be messed up, and it will look nicer.

Thanks for the tip, this is my first story on FMScout and I'm trying to get used to it.

Rui Costa's first interview

BTV - Benfica TV
RC - Rui Costa

Rui Costa has just taken charge here at Benfica, and he has granted Benfica TV an exclusive interview. This is what he had to say...

BTV - Welcome back to Benfica, Rui. How do you feel?

RC - It's great to be back. I'm looking forward to taking charge of this fantastic football club and lead them back to the glory days.

BTV - Firstly, do you have any transfer targets in mind?

RC - Honestly, I think we need a new left-back and some strengthening in the midfield. We don't have a lot of depth in these positions and I'll be looking to make some signings during the transfer window.

BTV - What will be your targets this season?

RC - Our targets will be to challenge for the league title, win one of the two domestic cups and reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.

BTV - Do you think that the current squad can win the league?

RC - Of course they can, this team has a really talented bunch of players, but if we are to advance into the later stages of European competition, this squad needs some major strengthening to compete with the best.

BTV - Finally, what kind of tactics will you be looking to employ?

RC - I can't tell you the specifics, but we will be looking to play free-flowing, attacking football.

BTV - Thanks for your time Rui, and from all of us here at Benfica TV, we wish you a successful season ahead.

Tactics

4-2-3-1

This will be the starting tactic throughout the season, and it will satisfy the board's need for attacking football. However, I will need to retrain Matic into a central midfield role, as he is not a natural CM.

4-1-2-1-2

This will be the alternate starting tactic, and it enables us to use Benfica's strengths: their strikers. We have Cardozo, Lima and Rodrigo this season, along with Melgarejo, and I will be looking to rotate them frequently.

4-3-3

This will be the tactic we will be using against the stronger teams in Europe and possibly against Porto and Sporting (?) in the Liga ZON Sagres. This tactic aims to play on the counter and we will be looking to use the pace on the wings to open up teams on the break.

Benfica sign Yttergård Jenssen

Benfica have signed Norwegian midfielder Ruben Yttergård Jenssen from Tromsø for £1.8 million on a four-year deal.

Yttergård Jenssen, who has been nicknamed the Norwegian Xavi, arrived for a medical yesterday and after passing the medical, was unveiled to the Portuguese media this morning.

Benfica manager Rui Costa, at the unveiling, has said that Yttergård Jenssen is a "phenomenal" player and had no doubts that he would make a huge impact for the club. "Ruben is a superstar in the making, his passing skills are up there with the best in the world, alongside the likes of Xavi and Pirlo, and I believe that he will be an outstanding player for Benfica."
