Dear Diary,
Until last season, my future looked bleak. I wasn't surrounded by quality players in Ipswich and as a result I wasn't able to perform to my best. The training facilities weren't great either, and that undoubtedly slowed down my growth. As I stayed in Ipswich for three seasons, I watched talented youngsters all around me join bigger clubs for massive fees, while I was stuck in a relegation battle with the Tractor Boys. I started to doubt by ability. I was depressed. But by the end of the third season, I managed to convince myself I was bigger than the club. I put in a transfer request, hoping to go to a top ten club in the top flight. I told my agent to get me a move to ANY Premier League club. And I got my move to the club I least expected. Manchester City. Not exactly known for developing youth, they didn't really seem to be a place where I could improve more than Ipswich - there were much better facilities of course, but I doubted I would start even two or three games during the course of the season.
And that's where I was wrong. I started the first four games of the season, and scored four goals and laid on another for a teammate. I gained the confidence of the manager Roberto Mancini, and played in every City game in the league. My goals to games ratio at Ipswich was less than half, but I had scored 24 in 38 for City, becoming the league's top goalscorer. I also managed to win two caps for England during the course of the season, also grabbing my first goal for my country of birth. We also had success as a club, winning two cups, including the Champions League. However, we only managed a disappointing fourth placed finish in the league.
It had been a dream season for me. Only after the last game, I had discovered exactly how much money City spent on me. £17.25m. I didn't know how the manager could have so much faith in me. City were never me dream club to play for, but I owe them so much. I'll be giving my 100% for this club, if and until Real Madrid or Barcelona come calling.
