RDF Development Guide & Training Schedules for FM20

This is a guide, not an exploit. Should you really be training players in the roles/position they're playing in? How many coaches do you need for best results?

Football Manager Guides - RDF Development Guide & Training Schedules for FM20
First of all, one very important thing: This is a guide and a suggestion, not an exploit.
  • Should you really be training players in the roles/position they're playing in?
  • How many coaches do you need for best results?
  • Is there a better way, or another way of doing things than the normal role focus in individual training?
We had a go to find out. And the results made us change our way of doing things totally.

This guide will continuously be updated with more / new information, therefore it's not 100% complete.
Credit to Rober82 & Cadoni for their advice. The results we've managed to get together have been superb, and finally gathered about as much information as we could.

I, just like many of us here, followed the same advice in training. And that's to train players in the roles/position they're playing in. We got the impression that made them understand the tactic more and automatically become adaptable to it.

Well, we recently figured out that there might be more than one way to do things.
We then had to question, is there a better way to have more control over a players development in training?

For example, Mason Greenwood is a special player. He has great physical attributes and height but his heading was on 7 and bravery was on 10. If I then train him as an AF because that’s what my tactic uses, I could be missing out on exploiting his physical attributes. So I then gave him the training focus “Aerial” to improve his heading and bravery. After 4 seasons, the result was incredible…

Our aim soon became to focus a player's yearly development on a certain attribute, or two, for a player to improve on to make him a better player. The game is filled with players who are insane finishers, but lack composure, or great at everything but make the wrong decisions.

What if we could give them what they lack, instead of adding +1 to things we are already happy with?

We tried double intensity on a focus, along with fitness coaches and some schedules built to expand and contribute to the double intensity focus. Boy did it work!

When a focus area improves to the level we are satisfied with, then naturally, we can change our focus into another area. We also see other attributes increasing at the time we are focusing on a few, they may be linked to the increase but we do not know.

Some probably come from normal training, and some improve naturally as a player develops. Our focus is still to give a player what he is missing, and make him a better player.

As you can see below, Ruocco has no position / role / duty in training. I set him to focus on his attacking movement. In a 6 month period, he has had a rapid increase in the area this focuses on, along with this increase, and again; he has other increases as well.

Rober:
That is an amazing find! This means we can now develop our young players much better, and give some players who are lacking a certain aspect of the game to reach a new level, exactly what they need.

Coaches.

Do we need 12 world class coaches? Does it make a difference? No one knows.

Picture your team training right now, the team is split into 3 sections. GK unit. DEF unit and ATT unit. Can you picture 5 ATT coaches coaching the ATT unit? Probably not, because it shouldn't happen. I did wonder what the fascination was in signing 12 coaches. I personally believe you don't need many coaches, but you can still do that as well if you want to.

However we recommend fitness first if you need to choose because of coaching limits.

I was fooled into believe achieving 5* training was the best thing out there. That just looks good.

But what if you signed plenty of fitness coaches? Fitness coaches are important when it comes to physical attributes and mental attributes. I was led to believe that Physical is most important, then Mental and last Technical. Again, so then why stock up on coaches that mainly coach technical stuff?

All we use is 1 or 2 GK to coach 2 or 3 GKs. Maximum of three coaches, this includes yourself, your assistant and just 1 general coach. Rest if your spots, you can fill with fitness coaches; assuming you're a good enough club to have a few coaches.

As you can see, I've hired many fitness coaches.

This screenshot is to show you my team's training performance. As a team, especially Brescia, this a very high. Also, generally my players are happy with training, no real concerns there either. You may have a one or two people upset, but take into consideration how much they're playing (international football too) and their personality.

Results from training.

I will let these screenshots speak. This is all in a one season period. so not even 12 months of training.

Remember: this is a guide, not an exploit.

Schedules!

Credit to Cadoni & Rober82 for co-creating and testing!

These schedules are tied with this training. We wanted to find a schedule that suits the method. So double intensity is advised as this was created around double intensity. We wanted to find the best combination and this is what we came up with.

1 Match Week - The double intensity training

Use this when you only have 1 match a week.

2 Match Week - The double intensity training

Use this when you have 2 matches during the week.

0 Match Week - The double intensity training

Use this when you have 0 matches a week.
Pro Tip: During international breaks, you can use this the week of no match, then use the set piece preset on week returning from international break.

Finally, results of training rating after first month with this in use.

And some developments during the pre-season and 1st month of schedule used.
This schedule was used in Pre-Season but currently not advised... yet.

Rober's remarks

  1. Get a lot of great fitness coaches, I have six. Three on each category. Put yourself and ass man at normal training categories, add 2 GK coaches for GK. If there's still room, find some normal coaches with model citizen personality.

  2. Instead of training in position, add double intensity on individual training. Then select area which is lacking, e.g. final third, that trains decisions and composure. These will increase very much. I think Almada started with 10 and 13, so +2 and still only 7 months of season played. They will get positional familiarity by playing in their position anyways. And they are still training in playing position.

  3. If coaches have Model citizen, Model pro, or Pro personalities, you might also have an increase in determination for many players. But not always so easy to find so determined and fairly determined also work.

  4. Select automation on all in individual, and go to the “rest” page to automate double intensity over 80 and 90%. They then change according to his fitness levels, to protect from training to hard when low fitness after matches, and get injuries.

Cadoni 's Coaching recommendation

Let's give you an example: You are a real manager. Style: Gegenpress. You hire a new coach and tell you I like tiki-taka. Should you trust that guy?

Of course you can have results with not the "right" ones, but I don't like my coaching team to have different philosophy from mine.

The ultimate training staff lineup for me is:

3 GK Coaches

- 1 General (the best one)
- 1 Shot Stopping
- 1 Handling

7 Coaches

- 1 General (the best one)
- 1 Defending Tactical
- 1 Defending Technical
- 1 Attacking Tactical
- 1 Attacking Technical
- 1 Possession Technical
- 1 Possession Technical

All of them must have same style & preferred formation as you.

3 Fitness Coaches

- 1 General
- 1 Strength
- 1 Quickness

Recommended traits
- Personalities: Model Citizen, Model Professional, Professional or at least Fairly Professional & Perfectionist
- Determination
- Level of Displine
- Motivating
- Working with Youngsters
- Tactical Knowledge (for coaches in general)
- Man Management (For AM, U18 Manager, U21 Manager, HoYD*)

*HoYD: The most important role for youths. Sometimes I am telling him to take care of training, since it's hard to follow youth fixtures or managers lacking general training attributes.

For the Assistant Manager (AM) I recommend the following:

- Personality
- Level of Discipline
- Determination
- Motivation
- JPA & JPP
- Tactical Knowledge

Since AM will take care of training:

- Attacking
- Defending
- Mental
- Technical
- Tactical

This also applies to U21 & U18 Staff.

Since it's really hard to have the ultimate training staff, that's why I don't have coaches. If I found one, then will be part.

Training & Youth Facilities:
If you are OK with finances, ask the board to upgrade. This is really important.

Have you guys managed to come up with a great Pre Season Training schedule as of yet
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
just click the three red buttons below the schedules column
  • steve100765's avatar
    cannot find the link??
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
just keep training them for a year and then check at pre-season. don't worry other attributes will also increase but they will have lower increase. for example if you give additional focus of final third composure and decisions will increase by three attributes and attributes like finishing and physical attributes will increase just by one attributes.(when they are u-21 never teach them physical attributes as they will increase with age but teach them mental attributes as they are more important than any other attributes. like if you have a striker with good dribbling and finishing but has poor composure and decisions he may do wrong things at right time)

About to start a season using this training method, how often would you recommend reviewing the players? I have a lot of young hot prospects I want to mould, don’t want to move them off a focus too soon but at same time the thought of going through my roster even once a month seems daunting.
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
no this is not due to schedules. training does not cause your players to score more or less. there may be variety of reasons one may be your tactic is a problem,or check the morale of the tactic or if you just use strikers for scoring check their attributes and give additional focus to finishing types like lobbing the keepers ,going round the keepers etc.in all my save(about 3 save since i instant result) i used these schedules but have constantly scored goals even with weaker teams. also check how many games you play in a week and depending use these schedules
  • joaonribeiro14's avatar
I’ve downloaded the training schedule and tried in my save... The players developed well but my team stopped scoring since I used the training schedule, with the same tactic and same players, so I think this is due the training schedule

hey azadi don't worry about it . many of my players are unhappy but they will still improve.
  • Azadi's avatar
It looks great but i have some problems with my players being unhappy with thier additional focus so for that what should i do?
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
hey genawe did you upgrade your facilities.this works greatly improving your players and give them some game time to increase. training injuries never happened to me and just follow what they did above.none of your players will increase much if you have poor training facilities.
bezzy the files are not archived. just open it through your 7-zip and put it in your schedules folder
  • Bezzy's avatar
Hi all, I'm having a problem extracting the schedules with 7-Zip it's saying it can not open file as archived, can anyone help please

Hello everyone, first of all I apologize for the bad english given by google translator and thank you for what you do day after day on this beautiful site. Assuming that I have the Sternschanze as a club, promoted by the amateur series up to the 2.Bundesliga I found that the players do not have a significant improvement (but I understand this that can be given by the bad structures and, not least, by the bad players ) and I have multiple injuries. And do you think normal? thank you again

Ah ... I forgot ... if you can put videos with subtitles so even people like me can fully appreciate you, more than I already appreciate you :-)

no two goalkeeper coaches are enough. goalkeepers are a problem simply because they don't play enough.in my manchester united save i had a 17 year old who didn't play much, so i loaned him to a league 1 team as star player,he has improved a lot and ready for premier league but i have dean henderson as backup so loaned him again and already improved. the regular problem with goalkeepers is they don't increase much if you didn't start training them early as they get slowest growth of any position
  • CenterMid's avatar
I'm getting good enough results for most of my players but one position I'm bit struggling is Goal Keepers. I don't see much progress in their attributes, is that because of the schedule which doesn't include any GK sessions?

I have too many GK coaches btw.
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
1.from what i have seen fitness coaches not only improve physical attributes but i have seen mental attributes grow very rapidly.so i think they train both physical and mental attributes while general ones only improve technical.
i tried this with my manu save.i hires 6 fitness coaches and other 3 are general ones. one of my 15 year old player i put him in first team and made him available for u18 as i wanted to play him in efl cup.after 1st season and after 2nd season midway in december all him mental attributes improved by 3(even determination).i had all fitness coaches either with professional, fairly professional, model professional, model citizen personalities
2.no i wouldn't change the schedules just use the 0,1,2 match schedules as described depending on number of matches you play in a week.even if the players are unhappy they will improve lots.

Hello, thank you for sharing this training schedules. I read the whole thing above, and I got the ideas of why you create those schedule. But I got a couple of question regarding the staff & player happiness.

    1. Why should the team have more fitness coach than the general (att, def, poss,.)?

    2. I have been using the schedules for half a season in and some players said they unhappy with the overall training. Should I be worry about that?
  • manujrosas's avatar
Well, I´ve read the whole thing and I gotta say I´m impressed, but I don´t agree completely with it. Specially about leaving training schedules without any change, as I see, you need to rotate the schedules so the squad doesn´t miss all the areas. Also goalkeeping training is missing quite a lot.
Although i agree with Double Training, and congrats for putting out a guide about development, since FM doesn´t make it that easy to master.

you can keep your youngster in youth team and they will improve. but i normally go for efl cup or cups which is not necessary to win i normally use my youth players and rest my first team. but just since the youth players get more match experience at higher levels they grow faster then in youth teams.they will improve in bot cases anyway

  • mighty237's avatar
Hey guys, not sure if anyone can help. But is it better to put high potential youngsters into the 1st team and make them available for the youth team or should I keep them with the youth team full time until they are a bit older?
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
don't worry about your other coaches three stars are enough.i tried with dinamo tbilsi who had bad coaches.but i hired three finess coaches with two professional and one model citizen.one of my youngsters who came through youth intake increased so much that he was sold after one year of development for about 10mil.basically almost all his physical and mental attributes improved a lot because almost all my coaches even the ones not fitness coaches and my youth teams all had mentality either professional, determined, model citizen. just replaced a lot of them.except hoyd i had no problem regarding tactical styles and formations as they will only use it if the are managing matches. don't know about it but i never wondered about tactical styles and all but all have improved even without all of them being having it same
  • interwebme's avatar
I've set the schedule and individual training and I'm happy with it.

I'm a bit dubious about firing my carefully curated coaching team. How important is this to player training?

The vast majority of my coaches have positive personalities and all have close, if not matching, tactical styles and formations.
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
no don't change the intensity at all.there are some players who will be unhappy but they will increase their attributes.only if the players unambitious his attributes will not increase. in my example in my manu save in my youth intake i had two great young players.one guy had professional attributes while the other had unambitious.the professional one started on vanarama north/south level and in a year improved to league one.while the other unambitious one didn't increase at all. it's just like other people when training many people just like to play and don't like to train but they still improve on quality training even if they don't have much interest.some will have extremely great interest and will train extremely hard like cr7. basically it's like normal training if he has high determination and good personality he will improve

  • CenterMid's avatar
    Thanks @reuben sequeira

Also when i try to make players learn new ppm couple of them complained about high work load. Do I need to lower their intensity to normal or just leave as it is?

I'm worried unhappy players might not develop as they should.
  • reuben sequeira's avatar
yeah individually train all your youth players. you can use these schedules for u23 or u18 or you can delegate to hoyd or am both there will be increase in attributes
    1
  • CenterMid's avatar
Is it fine to follow this for U23s and U18s too?

Usually the young players lack in most of the attributes, so concentrating on couple of attributes might result in these young players having poor attributes in most. I'm planning to follow the same schedule for first team, U23s and U18. So if anyone has already done it, please provide your inputs.
