Football Manager Guides - RDF Development Guide & Training Schedules for FM20
First of all, one very important thing: This is a guide and a suggestion, not an exploit.
  • Should you really be training players in the roles/position they're playing in?
  • How many coaches do you need for best results?
  • Is there a better way, or another way of doing things than the normal role focus in individual training?
We had a go to find out. And the results made us change our way of doing things totally.

This guide will continuously be updated with more / new information, therefore it's not 100% complete.
Credit to Rober82 & Cadoni for their advice. The results we've managed to get together have been superb, and finally gathered about as much information as we could.

I, just like many of us here, followed the same advice in training. And that's to train players in the roles/position they're playing in. We got the impression that made them understand the tactic more and automatically become adaptable to it.

Well, we recently figured out that there might be more than one way to do things.
We then had to question, is there a better way to have more control over a players development in training?

For example, Mason Greenwood is a special player. He has great physical attributes and height but his heading was on 7 and bravery was on 10. If I then train him as an AF because that’s what my tactic uses, I could be missing out on exploiting his physical attributes. So I then gave him the training focus “Aerial” to improve his heading and bravery. After 4 seasons, the result was incredible…

Our aim soon became to focus a player's yearly development on a certain attribute, or two, for a player to improve on to make him a better player. The game is filled with players who are insane finishers, but lack composure, or great at everything but make the wrong decisions.

What if we could give them what they lack, instead of adding +1 to things we are already happy with?

We tried double intensity on a focus, along with fitness coaches and some schedules built to expand and contribute to the double intensity focus. Boy did it work!

When a focus area improves to the level we are satisfied with, then naturally, we can change our focus into another area. We also see other attributes increasing at the time we are focusing on a few, they may be linked to the increase but we do not know.

Some probably come from normal training, and some improve naturally as a player develops. Our focus is still to give a player what he is missing, and make him a better player.

As you can see below, Ruocco has no position / role / duty in training. I set him to focus on his attacking movement. In a 6 month period, he has had a rapid increase in the area this focuses on, along with this increase, and again; he has other increases as well.

Rober:
That is an amazing find! This means we can now develop our young players much better, and give some players who are lacking a certain aspect of the game to reach a new level, exactly what they need.

Coaches.

Do we need 12 world class coaches? Does it make a difference? No one knows.

Picture your team training right now, the team is split into 3 sections. GK unit. DEF unit and ATT unit. Can you picture 5 ATT coaches coaching the ATT unit? Probably not, because it shouldn't happen. I did wonder what the fascination was in signing 12 coaches. I personally believe you don't need many coaches, but you can still do that as well if you want to.

However we recommend fitness first if you need to choose because of coaching limits.

I was fooled into believe achieving 5* training was the best thing out there. That just looks good.

But what if you signed plenty of fitness coaches? Fitness coaches are important when it comes to physical attributes and mental attributes. I was led to believe that Physical is most important, then Mental and last Technical. Again, so then why stock up on coaches that mainly coach technical stuff?

All we use is 1 or 2 GK to coach 2 or 3 GKs. Maximum of three coaches, this includes yourself, your assistant and just 1 general coach. Rest if your spots, you can fill with fitness coaches; assuming you're a good enough club to have a few coaches.

As you can see, I've hired many fitness coaches.

This screenshot is to show you my team's training performance. As a team, especially Brescia, this a very high. Also, generally my players are happy with training, no real concerns there either. You may have a one or two people upset, but take into consideration how much they're playing (international football too) and their personality.

Results from training.

I will let these screenshots speak. This is all in a one season period. so not even 12 months of training.

Remember: this is a guide, not an exploit.

Schedules!

Credit to Cadoni & Rober82 for co-creating and testing!

These schedules are tied with this training. We wanted to find a schedule that suits the method. So double intensity is advised as this was created around double intensity. We wanted to find the best combination and this is what we came up with.

1 Match Week - The double intensity training

Use this when you only have 1 match a week.

2 Match Week - The double intensity training

Use this when you have 2 matches during the week.

0 Match Week - The double intensity training

Use this when you have 0 matches a week.
Pro Tip: During international breaks, you can use this the week of no match, then use the set piece preset on week returning from international break.

Finally, results of training rating after first month with this in use.

And some developments during the pre-season and 1st month of schedule used.
This schedule was used in Pre-Season but currently not advised... yet.

Rober's remarks

  1. Get a lot of great fitness coaches, I have six. Three on each category. Put yourself and ass man at normal training categories, add 2 GK coaches for GK. If there's still room, find some normal coaches with model citizen personality.

  2. Instead of training in position, add double intensity on individual training. Then select area which is lacking, e.g. final third, that trains decisions and composure. These will increase very much. I think Almada started with 10 and 13, so +2 and still only 7 months of season played. They will get positional familiarity by playing in their position anyways. And they are still training in playing position.

  3. If coaches have Model citizen, Model pro, or Pro personalities, you might also have an increase in determination for many players. But not always so easy to find so determined and fairly determined also work.

  4. Select automation on all in individual, and go to the “rest” page to automate double intensity over 80 and 90%. They then change according to his fitness levels, to protect from training to hard when low fitness after matches, and get injuries.

Cadoni 's Coaching recommendation

Let's give you an example: You are a real manager. Style: Gegenpress. You hire a new coach and tell you I like tiki-taka. Should you trust that guy?

Of course you can have results with not the "right" ones, but I don't like my coaching team to have different philosophy from mine.

The ultimate training staff lineup for me is:

3 GK Coaches

- 1 General (the best one)
- 1 Shot Stopping
- 1 Handling

7 Coaches

- 1 General (the best one)
- 1 Defending Tactical
- 1 Defending Technical
- 1 Attacking Tactical
- 1 Attacking Technical
- 1 Possession Technical
- 1 Possession Technical

All of them must have same style & preferred formation as you.

3 Fitness Coaches

- 1 General
- 1 Strength
- 1 Quickness

Recommended traits
- Personalities: Model Citizen, Model Professional, Professional or at least Fairly Professional & Perfectionist
- Determination
- Level of Displine
- Motivating
- Working with Youngsters
- Tactical Knowledge (for coaches in general)
- Man Management (For AM, U18 Manager, U21 Manager, HoYD*)

*HoYD: The most important role for youths. Sometimes I am telling him to take care of training, since it's hard to follow youth fixtures or managers lacking general training attributes.

For the Assistant Manager (AM) I recommend the following:

- Personality
- Level of Discipline
- Determination
- Motivation
- JPA & JPP
- Tactical Knowledge

Since AM will take care of training:

- Attacking
- Defending
- Mental
- Technical
- Tactical

This also applies to U21 & U18 Staff.

Since it's really hard to have the ultimate training staff, that's why I don't have coaches. If I found one, then will be part.

Training & Youth Facilities:
If you are OK with finances, ask the board to upgrade. This is really important.

explodingsheep you have to put the three scheduls in schedule folder if not present create a folder schedule and then load it in training and schedules tab

I have read this article through and have already picked up some good ideas from it ie: automating the training intensity based on conditioning. I am willing to try the rest with an open mind and a new way of thinking.

This might be a Captain Obvious question but where do you add the 3 downloaded schedules? I have placed them in the Editor Data folder, is this correct?

hey great guide used in my manchester united save and mason greenwood became worldclass in just second season. one of my youngster shola shoterie is premier league quality player at just 17 by promoting him to first team an dusing these trainings and also making him available for u18.
just change the attributes if you get a message that particular attribute you are using is not useful. do not change if you get message that the attribute you are training is not a weakness.

    @Orlandini

Coach workload just shows what coaches are currently working on the scheduled training. If it shows "none", it just means they have no affect on what's being trained on that day (or week, I'm not too sure atm)

Hi just want to say a massive thanks to everyone involved creating this. Can’t wait to give it a go! I’ve made all the suggested changes and I’ve noticed that my coach workload is showing as none, is this correct and will the training still have the desired effects I don’t know how to change it? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Looks great guys! Have you done any testing to prove that it's actually these specific settings that manage it? I'd imagine it's honestly more to do with getting coaches with excellent personalities, moreso than it's the ton of fitness coaches, but maybe that's just me? Also, why would it *not* work to just set them to training the role and position? Wouldn't that grant the same improvements, but over a much greater amount of relevant stats?

    @festing11

You are a semi-professional club? If yes, then professional training isn't working for semi-pro clubs.
  • festing11's avatar
Morning, just downloaded these schedules and have put them in a schedule folder. They show up in the game so i upload them, but then can't select them to use. Is this because of the level in which my team is playing?
Currently managing Havant and Waterlooville in the Vananrma South.

@luketucker99: The download buttons can be found within the article above. Scroll to the "Schedules" section.

@zdko: If you're using a browser extension such as 'privacy badger' it will likely trigger our anti-leech system because it has no way to verify the request is actually coming from a page on fmscout.com. If that's the case, pause that for a moment or try in incognito or on another browser.
  • luketucker99's avatar
Its not giving me the option to download

I'm getting a "Restricted Access" page when I try to download the schedules, even though I'm logged in. Also can't find them on the general downloads section. Anyone have a mirror?

@Nimitz its recommended for you to have the same style and preferred formation and of course won't always be possible but most important is their attributes and personality.

@pauljones81 you should be able to click on the schedule for a direct download

@Majid25 preseason training and youth is something i'm still working on. At the moment i just use the normal schedules but add more physical training
  • Nimitz's avatar
You say that coaches: All of them must have same style & preferred formation as you.

I really struggle to find decent coaches with 4-2-4 and gegenpress and a preferred personality
  • pauljones81's avatar
    how do you download it?

    Hi guys,
what about preseason training and development?
  • Rober's avatar
Well... This was a bit strange.

    1. Take Batistuta then. I really do not think the point is the players age, but more that we want his playing style to add to the role. RDF probably could have picked a younger player, to satisfy those with a need to point out things. But then he also has some grammar mistakes I see. As do I when writing this right now. My apologies.
Sometimes we do things too fast, and do not think it quite trough. I am hoping the people who read our guide will give us the benefit of the doubt. We are just trying to share what we do with you guys. We do not want any credit for it. It is free to use for all who want to, and for those who disagree, I am sure there are many guides out there.

    2. Did we say that? This guide is about focusing the ability increase we have in a few specific areas. Training as f ex. a DLP spreads the increase over some 12 abilities we are already happy with, and do not want to prioritize atm. There is also a matter of total intensity.
Still, we are saying what we do.
If you do not like it, then to something else! :)

    3. There is a debate to be had over if 4 or 8 guys on one category matters if the workload is already light. It may be, we do not know. We also have coaching limits to think of, as we hire a lot of fitness coaches. Again, this is RDFs personal view. He even writes personally. I hope you will allow him to have his own opinion on that.

    4. This now is getting rather silly.
You said you read the guide, and you must have scrolled trough to get here to the comments.
There are 3 training schedules in there. Please. Get your facts straight.

    5. Today I complained to my missus, veggies again! I was not pleased, as the results are poor and no showing! However, I still ate them. And probably it was a smart move, as the other choice was not good at all. Let us hope the results are coming a bit later!

    6. Oh there is no six.

How long you have played FM really does not matter, unless you think those who have played longer are better at it? “No disrespect” you say, “this guide is shit”.
Okay. The last part kind of ruins the first...
I am sorry it is not to your taste; I am sure there are others you can follow.

We can make what we want. We do believe in it. We hope people will try it here as they have done other places, with success. We have enough data to show for that, and soon it will be possible to see in the forums also.
We will gladly eat our homemade bread and share it with our friends in the community! :)
    Best of luck!

I have several observations to make, with all due respect.
    1. Aguero is a very bad example, at his age he will go down sooner rather than later no matter how you train him, because of his age.
    2. Saying that Position training will stall development is a huge huge mistake.
Individual training adds more quality/specific positional training, so if you want an AM to improve passing, using "Additional Focus Passing" and "Individual Training as Advanced Playmaker Attack" will add more focus on Passing training than using just "Additional Focus Passing" alone, while ALSO focusing the midfielder on his playing AM position, instead of wasting training CA on random general training. It's math, more passing training can't be worse than less passing training, if you want to improve passing.
    3. "I personally believe you don't need many coaches." Another huge mistake, and it's about math.
I am sorry, but that's why you have the coach load attribute. When it's Heavy or Average, the coaches will train your players less than on Light. So you need many coaches to improve the load on each coach else you will be, and I semi-quote, "stalling the player development" radically.
    4. If you do not setup training schedules, then I am sorry, but this is not a training and development guide. Development lies within training, individually and as a team, and mentoring the players. And the arguments from 2. are even stronger, since you don't even bother to setup training, so the AM, which is vastly inferior to us, humans, does a crap job. All the time.
    5. If players are unhappy about training it's because they have poor mental attributes, or if you don't setup enough training. In case A, let them be unhappy, since they need training, even if they are unprofessional. In case B, you have a problem.

Sorry, but as a player that plays FM for 20 years and the last 5 years or more I have been focused on training the next big stars from the academy, eclusively, I have to say that this guide is misguiding. No disrespect meant, this is a game, but such information can mislead new and average players.
    Good luck.

EDIT: And I quote myself. You can't make a development guide where you don't use human training schedules, enough coaches, because you also say that you don't believe many coaches are required, AND individual training.
It's like making bread without 75% of the ingredients.

    @Paus

The personalities of background staff is important. A "Jovial" or "Fickle" personality must be avoided. You want professionals in your team and not unprofessionals. So, Model Citizen, Model Professional, Professional or Fairly Professional is welcome.

You can search the staff personalities via "Staff Search" and add parameter via New Search > Additional > General > Personalities
  • fc.cadoni's avatar
    @Paus

The double intensity applies automatically when the player has 90> Condition. You can do it that via "Rest" tab for all players - setting "Automatic" for each player, so when a player is 90> Condition will be in Double Intensity. When the player is <59 Condition will be "No Gym or Pitch Work" etc.

Since it's really to hard to have the Ideal Background Staff (IBS), the more fitness coaches - the better.

It's interesting, but I dont understand it all. (Maybe due to my English)
Point 2 is what I understand.... and then 3 and 5 I don't. The pictures doesnt make it clear either. When do players train on double intensity?
