Massive Tactical Overhaul as FM26 Introduces "In Possession" and "Out of Possession" Formations.
Football Manager 2026 (FM26) is bringing the biggest change to tactics we've seen in years! Forget setting just one formation for the whole game.
Now, you get full control with separate In Possession and Out of Possession formations and player roles.

This exciting new (well, not entirely new as it was a thing back in CM 01/02 iirc) feature means more flexibility and realism than ever before.
This detailed breakdown will cover everything you need to know about the new tactical depth in FM26.
FM26 Key Feature 1: Two Separate Formations

In FM26, your team will have two distinct formations:
- In Possession formation: How your team lines up when you have the ball.
- Out of Possession formation: How your team lines up when the opposition has the ball (when you are defending).
Historically, if you wanted a player to push high as an Attacking Midfielder when attacking, they would also be stuck in that advanced position when defending.
Now, you can position them high in possession without forcing them to defend poorly or out of possession.
Why is this important? It lets you truly replicate the tactics of top real-life managers who change their team's shape completely based on whether they have the ball or not.
FM26 Key Feature 2: Massive Overhaul of Player Roles

To support the two-formation system, FM26 has completely overhauled player roles. This makes the game more accurate, modern, and clearer for everyone.
In Possession Roles (Reworked & New)
The entire list of In Possession roles has been reviewed. To make things simpler, FM26 is saying goodbye to some traditional, complex names. You will no longer find roles like the Mezzala, Enganche, and Trequartista. Other classic roles, like the Inside Forward, have been updated with new functionality.
Plus, FM26 introduces these entirely NEW In Possession Roles:
New In Possession Role | Focus |
---|---|
No-Nonsense Goalkeeper | Safety first; stays near the goal. |
Ball-Playing Goalkeeper | Joins the play to help build attacks. |
Overlapping Centre-Back | A central defender who runs wide to cross. |
Playmaking Wing-Back | A full-back designed to create chances. |
Advanced Wing-Back | A highly aggressive, attacking full-back. |
Midfield Playmaker | A central player who dictates the game's tempo. |
Wide Central Midfielder | Covers wide areas from the middle of the pitch. |
Wide Forward | A striker who moves into side channels. |
Channel Forward | A striker who runs into the space between defenders. |
Out of Possession Roles (Completely New Set)
The FM26 team has confirmed a completely new set of roles designed purely for the Out of Possession phase. This means your attacking Midfield Playmaker can switch to a purely defensive role like a Screener (to block space) or a Presser (to win the ball high) when you are defending.
New Tool: FM26 Tactical Visualiser

To help you manage these two shapes, FM26 introduces a brand-new tool called the Visualiser.
The Visualiser is a tool that clearly shows you exactly what your formation looks like in each phase:
- It displays your team shape for both In Possession and Out of Possession.
- It breaks down the shape across the pitch: in your defensive third, the middle third, and the final third.
- It clearly shows how the different player roles will combine and behave in each part of the pitch, making your tactical choices clear and easy to understand.
Transitions are Re-Organised

The familiar Transition instructions have not been removed; they have just been logically moved into their respective sections:
- Attacking Transition (what happens right after you win the ball) now sits within the In Possession screen.
- Defensive Transition (what happens right after you lose the ball) now sits within the Out of Possession screen.
Accessibility for All Managers
Worried this new depth is too much? The FM26 team has made it highly accessible for both new players and tactical experts.
For New Players: The system will offer recommended formations and suggested player roles for your Out of Possession phase based on the In Possession formation you choose. Use the Assistant Manager and the Visualiser to keep things simple.
For Experts: You have total freedom to dive deep, set both formations from scratch, use all the team instructions, and make real-time, detailed changes to formation or just a single player role during the match.
This new level of control means that whether you want to keep it simple or become a tactical mastermind, FM26 gives you the tools to manage your team exactly how you want!
