Underdog 4-2-3-1 Tactic by Victor2248

A superb formation with stability in the defence and on the midfield, creating plenty of chances and maintaining ball possession. Ideal for underdog teams!

Football Manager 2017 Tactics - Underdog 4-2-3-1 Tactic by Victor2248
Finishing 4th in my first season, with the expectation not to relegate!

This tactic is excellent creating chances. There's full control in both the defence and on the midfield, where you're having a ball winning midfielder, who's job is to win the duels on the midfield, and pass the ball to his teammates. The central midfielder creates stability on the midfield at both the offensive and defensive phases. The defences' primary focus is to defend, but the RB and LB can support in some attacks if needed. The two inside forwards are creating chances for both themselves and for the complete forward, where they act as a kind of additional striker. The advanced playmakers' main task is, of course, creating chances to his teammates, but he can also make a shot outside the field. The complete forward is the attacking front, where he's the play station and the finisher on the team.

The tactic is great for:

  • Great amount of shots per game (About 15+)
  • Great stability and control on the midfield
  • Playing attacking football (Boards philosophy)
  • Playing with a quite high ball positioning in the games (about 55%+)
  • Having an all-round attacker
  • The inside forwards are creating plenty of chances, including goals
  • Excellent for smaller clubs, but also the biggest clubs in the world

The boards philosophy:

The build-up in this tactic:

A patient build-up play, with a narrow and compact defence and midfield. The BWM makes it possible to intercept the ball on the midfield, and the defenders are just so structured, stable and defensive.

Key players and attributes

These players have played a major role in my squad in the season and were playing perfectly in their chosen role.

Inside forward
Jonathan Viera has been my absolutely best and most important player. He was my top scorer in the first season, and also the top assist maker. He played perfectly on the inside forward role, as he assisted and scored a lot.
The key attributes for this role are: Dribbling, Finishing, Technique, Off the ball, Acceleration and Pace.

Central defender
Pedro Bigas is an experienced and stable defender. He has saved the team plenty of times, played excellent against Real Madrid in the 3-3- draw at home. He has been a part of a magic duo with Mathias 'Zanka' Jørgensen, where they have played like they have known each other for their hole life.
The key attributes for this role are: Heading, Marking, Tackling, Positioning and Strength.

Full back
Michel has been extraordinary on the right back, where he has played so well, that he kept the captain David Garcia on the bench for the whole season. Very very underrated player, who could be such a bargain in another career. So stable player, both offensive and defensive.
The key attributes for this role are: Marking, Tackling, Acceleration, Positioning and Anticipation.

Ball playing defender
Mathias 'Zanka' Jørgensen is, without doubt, my best signing in this career. Such a secure player to have in the defence. He has been playing so well among his partner in the defence, Pedro Bigas. So glad to watch a Dane play that well in such a big league!
The key attributes for this role are: Heading, Marking, Passing, Tackling, Jumping Reach, Vision and Positioning

Ball winning midfielder
Roque Mesa in my captain (because of David Garcias lack of playing time), and has been doing such a great job with that role! He's a very great player, both technical and mental. He's kinda the heart of the team and is always doing everything for the club.
The key attributes for this role are: Tackling, Bravery, Aggression, teamwork, work rate, stamina and determination.

Advanced playmaker
Kevin-Prince Boateng is great at attacking. His vision, passing and long shots are very decent for this role, and he has been doing such a great job, with many goals, passings and assists. He's a very attractive player for other clubs, and i'm trying to make him stay at Las Palmas
The key attributes for this role are: First Touch, Passing, Technique, Decisions, Vision, Long shots and Work Rate.
