Cesc Fabregas Rotations Masterclass won Serie A with Como
Hi guys
this is my tactic emulation of Cesc Fabregas's Como 2024-25
ENGLISH
In possession
When Como has the ball, they aim to control possession through short passes, played at a slightly higher tempo to stretch the opponent's defense and create space for their relational patterns to emerge. Cesc Fàbregas deeply values central play and creating central numerical superiority, so the focus is on bringing the game to the center and "collapsing" into tight, central areas to achieve this goal.
While prioritizing possession, Como isn't afraid to play more directly when the opportunity arises, willing to take risks and penetrate defenses. A prime example is how the team constantly tries to get the ball into the box to create cut-back situations. Nico Paz's recent goal against Atalanta was a perfect demonstration of this.
In transition: rapid reactions
When possession is lost, the immediate reaction is to commit 3-4 players to an intense, full-field press to win the ball back instantly. If successful, they'll look to hit the opponent on the counter-attack. If the gegenpressing doesn't work, Como quickly reshapes into a medium block.
On goal kicks, the goalkeeper is usually patient. He holds the ball to attract the opponent's press, then looks for a short pass to a nearby central defender. However, if he's closed down too quickly, he's instructed to launch it long to the striker.
Out of possession: controlled defense
When the opponent has the ball, Como generally sets up in a compact medium block. The defensive line maintains a higher position to compact the space in midfield. From this medium block, Como is quite selective about when to press, with the main goal of forcing play out wide. When the opponent takes goal kicks, Como pushes high, maintaining a higher line to make it difficult for them to build play easily
Player roles and instructions
Sweeper-keeper (Support): Goalkeeper
The goalkeeper is crucial, especially in possession. He must be comfortable with the ball at his feet and constantly offer himself as a passing option. Off the ball, he generally maintains his position but can sweep up loose balls if needed. The Sweeper-Keeper (Support) role is perfect, with no additional instructions.
Wing-back (Attack): Right-back
Instruction: Cross Aim Centre
The right-back is the more offensive of the two full-backs. He pushes high and wide to overlap the right winger. When he gets the ball, he's aggressive, driving to the byline to create cut-back situations or even a chance for himself.
Ball-Playing Defender (Defend): Right Center-back
Instruction: Dribble More
The right central defender is the more adventurous of the two center-backs, especially with his passing. He's not afraid to carry the ball forward.
Ball-Playing Defender (Defend); Left Center-back
The left central defender is more conservative and thoughtful with the ball, usually opting for simple, short passes.
Wing-back (Support): Left-back
Instruction: Cross Aim Centre
The left-back's role is simple: provide width when necessary, but generally position himself deeper and narrower than the right-back. This deeper movement can sometimes lead him to act as a wider third central defender in possession. The Wing-Back (Support) role suits him perfectly.
Anchor (Defend): Right Defending Midfielder
The right defensive midfielder is the more defensive of the double-pivot. His main task is to hold his position and intercept opponent counter-attacks. In possession, he circulates the ball and is available for short passes. The Ball Winning Midfielder (Defend) role is ideal, with no additional instructions.
Deep-Lying Playmaker (Support): Left Defending Midfielder
The left defensive midfielder is the more progressive of the double-pivot. He always tracks the ball's movement and offers himself as a passing option. In possession, he can also drift wider left to link up with the left winger and left-back, creating unpredictable rotations on the left side. The Deep-Lying Playmaker (Support) role, with a specific instruction, is perfect for him
Attacking Midfielder (Support): Nico Paz
Instructions: Take More Risks, Dribble More, Get Further Forward, Move Into Channels
Nico Paz has been an absolute revelation! In this system, he's asked to position himself in the left half-space, which allows the right winger to drift into the right half-space. However, Nico often roams and can drop deep to receive the ball. When he gets it, he's truly special – he can create something from nothing with a dazzling dribble, a sublime pass, or an incredible long-range shot with his wonderful left foot. When creating cut-back situations, Nico usually positions himself just outside the penalty area, creating a perfect angle for the wide player to find him, as seen with his recent goal against Atalanta. The Attacking Midfielder (Support) role, with these added instructions, is the closest to replicating his unique abilities.
Inverted Winger (Attack): Right Winger (Strefezza)
Instructions: Roam From Position, Stay Wider
Strefezza, in this position, is asked to invert from the flank to occupy the right half-space. From there, he's encouraged to move around to create situational numerical superiority and link up with teammates – this is absolutely crucial for the relational patterns. When he receives the ball, Strefezza has the freedom to dribble at opponents, combine with teammates, or play a through ball for a teammate making a run. The Inverted Winger (Support) role, with specific instructions, is perfect.
Inverted Winger (Attack): Left Winger (Diao)
Instructions: Roam From Position, Stay Wider
Diao will do many things similar to Strefezza, particularly moving to create situational numerical superiority and relational opportunities. However, with Strefezza and Paz occupying the half-spaces, Diao's main task is to maintain width on the left side. So, similar to Strefezza's role, the Inverted Winger (Attack) role, with slightly modified instructions, is ideal.
Complete Forward (Support): Striker (Cutrone)
Instruction: Tackle Harder
Cutrone is asked to perform a variety of tasks. If the goalkeeper or a central defender launches it long to him, he needs to control the ball and lay it off to a teammate. Additionally, Cutrone will move to create situational numerical superiority and relational opportunities. Finally, he constantly makes runs to receive through balls from his teammates. The Complete Forward (Support) role, with specific instructions, is the perfect choice for him.
