Top Pre-Season and Biteco Signs
As Newcastle round off their pre-season by hammering Inter Milan, Brazilian Midfielder puts pen to paper with the Toon.
Matheus Biteco has officially joined Newcastle United from Gremio, where he had already made 22 appearances in the Brazilian League. The young holding midfielder is Newcastle's only Brazilian, but has made it clear that he is willing to adapt to both the league and the lingo.
"I am looking forward to playing for this club. It is a club, like Gremio, that many people come to watch and support. I have spoken with the manager and the other staff and they are very ambitious. Playing in a league like this has been my dream since I first began to play football, and I can't think of another club I'd rather do it with."

Meanwhile, today, Newcastle completed their pre-season in a home game that Matheus Biteco was present at, observing. He could not have chose a better game to watch as Newcastle thrashed Inter Milan 4-0, courtesy of Papiss Cisse's hattrick and a fine shot from Zaha, with Loic Remy making his debut off the bench.
The pre-season begun when Newcastle traveled to France to play a match against Montpelier, in which Yanga-Mbiwa, an ex-captain of Montpelier, performed well. In the end, however, it was Hatem Ben Arfa who made the difference with a slick goal that left the opposition uninspired, and the game at 1-0.
In the second match, the Newcastle squad traveled a much shorter distance to play Carlisle, beating them 4-2, with a good attacking show, yet a rather poor defensive display from the Magpies. Yanga-Mbiwa, Sissoko and Gouffran (on two occasions) all scored to send the Newcastle fans home happy.
Most Newcastle fans would agree the third game of the friendly campaign was most certainly Newcastle's worst, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Hannover, their only consolation a goal from left-back Davide Santon. Despite the result, Newcastle still played relatively well.
Newcastle then returned to France to participate in a friendly cup including themselves, Bologna, Hertha and Saint-Etienne. They faced the latter, and won 2-1 thanks to a second half comeback with goals from Shola Ameobi and Yohan Cabaye.
Only a day later, the Toon moved on to face Hertha in the friendly cup final, who had overcome Bologna. Zaha and Williamson both scored, but, the German outfit did not give up and earned an equalizer until the game went to penalties. Newcastle won on penalties with successful shots from Ben Arfa, Debuchy, Shola Ameobi and Davide Santon.
The penultimate game would see Newcastle travel to local feeder club, Gateshead, where they grasped a convincing 4-0 win, Ben Arfa, Coloccini, Obertan and Cisse supplying the goals.
Newcastle will begin their Premier League campaign in a weeks time, facing arch-rivals Sunderland at home, perhaps the most important game of the season to Newcastle fans.
