What happens in Vegas, stays in Leyton

When you are a self-made multi-millionaire and have bought your club for a fiver, I guess it’s no big deal for you to gamble the team’s manager position away on a poker hand in Las Vegas.

When I hit the runner-runner Royal Straight Flush at the poker table at the Mandalay Bay, I knew that I had won the bet with the grey haired, well-spoken Englishman on the other side of the table but I didn't know my life had just changed.

Now I am jumping ahead in the story and I guess its best that I start by introducing myself.

My name is Tom Northwood.

What I did in Vegas is not important to the story and how I ended up on the poker table next to Barry Hearn I still don’t remember to this day.

We had spent the night playing poker, drinking Boddington's and talking about the history of English football and the future of American Soccer. He had introduced himself as a London based sports promoter named Barry.
I was just a soccer fan passing thru Vegas and I had no clue who the man opposite me was.

The bet was stupid even for a bet made at three in the morning. With an ace and a ten of diamonds on the hand and a jack of diamonds on the flop I still needed runner-runner king and queen of diamonds for the Royal Straight Flush. If I lost I would buy the next round of beers and if I won Barry told me that I would be the new manager of his football team. I didn't know what football team he was talking about but suspected I would get to help him manage his Fantasy Team and if I were lucky there might even be some prize money involved in the deal.
I did not care, it was my turn to pay for the beers anyway.

Before I got the chance to call the pretty cocktail waitress over to the table to ask for more beers, the king and queen of diamonds hit the table and my world was turned upside down.

The very next day I was onboard the private jet of Chairman Barry Hearn, flying back to London for the first day on my new job. Manager of Leyton Orient Football Club, or better known as The O's.
It was on that flight we made the blueprint for Leyton Orient F.C becoming the American team.

During the flight I overheard Barry had a long talk on the phone with the teams former manager Russell Slade and promised him a new job as the commissioner of his newest project, “The Ping-Pong League of Champions”. Apparently it was not exactly what Russell Slade had in mind and he declined the offer.
I like your lifestyle. Last year you got a job by going golfing. This year you win a job in a game of high stakes poker.

It must be so interesting.

I guess that’s why it’s called fiction :)
Brilliant Northwood, I love it, what a start.

I'll have to let you in that I am doing Spanish LLM for FM14.. and may have based it around your story :P
Love the writing, and the story. Amazing.

I planned Estepona for FM14! I had no idea about how they were doing or whether they even existed in FM13 or even FM12, so I didn't end up doing it :P Loving the club for a fiver reference too, great documentary :D
Great start hahaha, good luck!

Tom, this start has me hooked already........I am really excited about what will grow from this........best of luck.
Thanks for all the kind words.

After Leyton Orients recent performance in the league I am getting cold feet’s about this. :) It will be tough to duplicate that performance.

The next update will have to wait until the game is released and I get a chance to play at least half a season ahead.

What is the experience from people that have played the Classic mode.
Is it detailed enough for writing a story or should I stay with the “normal” game?

Stay with normal, then update! :P
Picked the game up yesterday but have still not installed. I know that if I install the new game I will never finish the last season with C.D. Constància.

Will properly wait until the first patch has been released.
Haha first ever Northwood story I have read! I regret not reading others mate, great start! :)

Blinded by the light

For the second time in twenty four hours I was blinded by the light. The first time it was from the bright neon lights on the Las Vegas strip. This time it was the blinking blitz lights from the press photographers cameras that blinded me when I sat down with Chairman Barry Hearn for my first meeting with the British press after being named the new Leyton Orient manager.

I knew I was in for a rough day. The team’s former manager Russell Slade had not been happy about his dismissal and had not wasted any time telling that to anyone who would listen. It didn't help me that he had done a good job with the team over the previous seasons and that he was beloved by fans, respected by the press and admired by the players.

The press had not been able to find any information on me beforehand and it sure didn't help me that I was still in the same cloth I had been wearing twenty four hours before when at the poker table. I looked lost and out of place next to Barry and the journalist smelled blood in the water.

I suddenly got a cruel feeling that I was being played.

Why was I even here?
Why had Barry Hearn handed the team over to me?
Were there a hidden agenda I knew nothing about?
Was I being set up to be the fall guy?

With the first questions starting to hammer down on me I had no time to think about those questions and instead had to focus on doing my job, being the new manager of the Leyton Orient Football Club.

I was grilled about everything from my lack of experience to my preferred playing style, and everything in between.

An hour later I was back in my penthouse apartment at the corner of Brisbane Road, overlooking the pitch. The jet lag combined with the pressure of the press conference made me feel like I had been run over by a 18-wheeler and I just wanted to go to sleep.

But that would have to wait.

Instead I flipped open my PC and pulled up the email with the scouting report I had received from my Hd. Scout Gareth Casey earlier in the day. It was time to get to work and learn all there was to know about my new team.
