Right, i've tried to do this, but when I look for the 'Football Manager 2014' sub-folder in the 'common' folder, I don't have it? I've searched my computer looking for it, but it appears that, despite me literally playing FM14 right now, it's not on my computer? Can anyone shed any light?

in Steam, go to Library --> right click on "Football Manager 2014" in the left hand side window --> click on "Properties" --> click on "Local Files" tab --> click on "Browse Local Files".
This will tell you exactly where your game is installed.

It didn't work for me either
so i did this and i wasn't able to manage one of this teams...do i have to reload anything in the preferences or do i have to do anything else?
It worked for me straight off, is everybody selecting 1430 if using that 14.30 update?
Managing teams I believe is based off how many players they have, "unlocking" them in this sense just means they will have the actual players that are on your database. Leagues, you'll need to download a database for.
i am selecting the 14.3 update and have the database from pro selected
