Who Exactly Is Matt Wells?
This is a question asked by many Eastleigh supporters over the past week and for a special documentary for SpirtfiresTV we have sat down with Matt to try and get him to talk to us about his life so far.
Matt Wells was born and raised in Swadlincote, Burton-Upon-Trent and had a interesting childhood full of ups and downs. He played football for as long as he could remember but one day he realised he had a bigger job in football and that was to become a manager.
From around the age of 13 Matt knew what he wanted to be and that was a world class manager and he wanted to take charge of his own team and make a name for himself in the footballing world. At the age of 16 after he left school he attained his coaching badges and he then went on to coach an U-14 side at the club he played for all of his young life. Midway FC.
After a few years on the club folded much to his disappointment. Matt soon got another job at the club he loved even more. A local side named Gresley FC who he went to watch week in week out. He was given the reserve team to manage and he won the league with them 3 years in a row before he joined the first team squad as a coach. When he reached the age of 29 the manager of Gresley FC left the club and another coach named Martin Rowe was appointed. This lead to a widespread mass exodus at the club as Rowe had a reputation for falling out with most of his team.
Matt stayed on until Martin let him go as he felt he was not a good enough coach for that level of football. This then lead Matt to stop coaching but now after a 3 year absence and at the age of 31 Wells has returned to be a manager at Eastleigh FC.
Matt then gave us a few comments about his new job and his ambitions for the club.
"This is a big club in these parts and I want to make the fans proud. I want them to go home after watching us and be happy and know that their club is winning. The club firstly needs to be in league football soon and I know that I can deliver it and that is my aim. We also could do with winning some trophies and having a good F.A cup run along the way."
"I am going to make this club the best club in the world."
