Möhlmann’s first press conference

New Eintracht Braunschweig coach Benno Möhlmann attended his first press conference unveiling him as the new manager. The content of the interview was as follows.

Journalist: First, Benno, how do you feel?

Möhlmann: Like no one else.
*the room explodes into laughter*

Möhlmann: Seriously, I feel happy to be a part of Eintracht Braunschweig again. It's a great club and it's a club that's been in my heart since I first joined.

Journalist: OK. The club is now back in the Bundesliga after a long time, the first time since 1985, nearly 30 years ago. Do you think you have a chance of survival?

Möhlmann: Yes. I don't think there has ever been or ever will be a team who can't at least hope to stay up and if there has been then we're not it. We want to stay up and we will work hard to stay up, so I'm confident we will.

Journalist: The former manager Torsten Lieberknecht was youth coach during your last stint here. How was your relationship?

Möhlmann: He was just my youth coach really. I try to keep close to all of my staff so I did know him well, as a player too.
Journalist: Did you expect him to become a great manager?

Möhlmann: No one would have known, you can't tell, it's not possible. No, not possible. He was a good tutor for the youngsters, yes.

Journalist: The club have delved into the loan market by signing Karim Bellarabi from Bayer Leverkusen. Do you plan to continue this?

Möhlmann: Maybe. We need to look into the market, see who is available. I know the club and their finances, perhaps sales are likely.

Journalist: Your first game of the season is going to be against giants Borussia Dortmund, an your second game at the national team and Hertha BSC's Olympiastadion. Is this at all intimidating?

Möhlmann: I wouldn't say so. Dortmund may be a challenge but we've played at the Allianz Arena against 1860 Munich before, we've played cup games in 60,00 capacity grounds, and we've played Hertha before. So I know we can get a win away in Berlin.

Journalist: Be honest. Can you keep the club up?

Möhlmann: Yes. I can.

Möhlmann has seemed to be quite forward thinking in his approach. He also seems rather arrogant, much like Franco Foda who was too linked with the job, but in a positive way, showing confidence. The new boss appears adamant that he will manage to keep the club in the Bundesliga.

Pre Season

Eintracht Braunschweig's new Bundesliga season would soon begin but first the club would need to get of the beach and go through a series of gruelling friendlies to gain fitness ahead of the club's season in years. The pre season friendlies consisted of the following

There would be a face off against the reserves to judge the players, followed by a visit from Hungarians Gyor. 4 days later, a trip to Fortuna Köln followed by a game against FC Magdeburg from the former GDR. The training finished with hosting Dukla Prague, better known for their part in a 1980's song, followed by the short journeys to the Netherlands to face Go Ahead Eagles, and a fixture against K. Standaard Wetteren of Belgium.

Let's see how it went.

The first game was behind closed doors at Eintracht's reserve team ground, ending in a 5-1 win for the first team. The scoring began on just 7 minutes with Mirko Boland shooting home from outside the box after being set up by Dennis Kruppke. Orhan Ademi got the second, tapping in after Dennis Kruppke squared across the box. Timo Perthel made it 3, capitalising on a poor clearance to beat a defender and hit the back of the net. Dennis Kruppke made it 4-0 at the interval after the goalkeeper missed his long shot and it rolled over the line. There was only two goals in the second half but only one went to the first team and it was Marco Caligiuri who bagged the goal after 80 minutes, with a Simeon Jackson drive being the only consolation for the reserves.

Eintracht's pre season stalled as the team failed to outscore their Hungarian opponents Gyor at home, on a windy day with just 8,754 present. Braunschweig scored 50 seconds in through Jonas Erwig-Druppel. The visitors equalised through a Béla Boda header from a corner that went in off the upright, and it would take just 18 more minutes for Gyor to go in front as Balasz Szekeres's shot slipped through the Braunschweig keeper Petkovic's fingers. Szekeres scored again 9 minutes later yet this time it was at the wrong end, as he headed in a poor cross from Jan Hochsheidt. Gyor took the lead again just after half time as Daniel Davari, the Iranian keeper who had been brought on at the break, fumbled a header and Béla Boda pounced. Again Braunschweig came back quickly and Mirko Boland equalised with a well placed shot which squeezed into the near corner. No more score came in the last 30 minutes and Gyor went back to Hungary happy.

Braunschweig kept faith in their all out attack style for the next game against Fortuna Köln as they again drew 3-3 against a side they should have beaten. Köln took the lead 9 minutes in, Thomas Kraus blasting the ball past Petkovic, and it took the favourites 20 minutes to level. Jonas Erwig-Druppel scored twice in a few minutes with a volley from inside the box coming after a placed shot that reached the bottom corner. Braunschweig weren’t ahead for long, as Manuel Rasp headed home from a poorly defended corner to equalise before half time. On 78 minutes substitute keeper Davari was beaten at his near post by Ozan Yilmaz to put Köln in the lead. Fortunately for Eintracht Braunschweig Torsten Oerhl was on hand to head home a cross in the last minute to tie it up.

1.FC Magdeburg shouldn’t have been a problem for a Bundesliga side but Eintracht Braunschweig were well beaten by the Regionalliga Nordost side. The first of the two goals came just before half time as winger Fabio Viteritti powered the ball past numerous defenders and the goalkeeper. Patrick Barje added the second before full time and the Eintracht Braunschweig players left the field with chorus of boos from the away fans.

Defeat followed defeat for Braunschweig as an the hosts were unsuccessful in their attempts to beat Czech side Dukla Prague, more well known for a 1980’s song about their away kit, Subbuteo and ‘dodgy transformers’. David Kriva gave Dukla the lead 9 minutes in after some casual defending from Marcel Correia, and he added a second later on, after more bad defending from Correia and a mistake by Petkovic. Braunschweig pulled one back late on as an Erwig-Druppel cross found Gianluca Korte but there was no further score and Eintracht Braunschweig had lost again.

Die Löwen finally got themselves a victory in Holland as they beat Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles but not before a few scares, such as the home side taking the lead early on with Sven Werner finishing a great move. Moments later the Eagles keeper only managed to parry a Matthias Henn header and Torsten Oehrl tucked in the rebound. Go Ahead Eagles had Eric Falkenburg sent off for coming in on Erwig-Druppel from behind after an hour, and the Dutch side never recovered. Dennis Kruppke lashed home a volley and Karim Bellarabi placed an Omar Elabdellaoui cross into the net to seal the win.

Braunschweig’s final game saw their second 5-1 win of the pre season against Standaard Wetteren of Belgium. Orhan Ademi scored after a half hearted series of clearance attempts from the Wetteren players and just two minutes afterwards Marc Pfitzner broke the net as the Wetteren keeper Dewolder found his effort too hot to handle. The Belgians came back into contention, with a goal from Raf Goethuys, but it was soon 3-1 through Ademi who finally managed to score after two blocked attempts. The 4th came soon, a well placed effort from Ademi following Boland’s cross securing him the matchball but not the last goal, as Jan Hochsheidt finished the scoring 10 minutes from time. An emphatic victory.

Roll on the Season!

In other news, the DFB-Pokal First Round Draw was made, pitting Braunschweig against Scwarz-Weiss Rehden, HSV against local rivals Victoria Hamburg and Dortmund vs Erzgebirge Aue.

Foda gets FSV Frankfurt job

FSV Frankfurt have appointed former Sturm Graz and Kaiserslautern manager Franco Foda as their head coach ahead of the 2013/14 season. The 47 year old was looking for the VfB Stuttgart or Eintracht Braunschweig job but missed out on the former to Torsten Lieberknecht and Braunschweig’s job to Benno Möhlmann.

The managerial merry go round, which seems now to be over, began with VfB Stuttgart manager Bruno Labbadia being sacked after his side crashed out of the UEFA Europa League against Croatian team HNK Rijeka. Eintracht Braunschweig’s manager Torsten Lieberknecht admitted he was interested in the job, as did Foda, yet it was Lieberknecht who got the post. Foda was then linked with taking over at Eintracht Braunschweig. Again, he missed out, losing the job to Benno Möhlmann. It was Möhlmann’s 3rd time in charge of Braunschweig. Football runs in the family of Foda: His son Sandro played under him at Sturm Graz and was in fact offered a trial by Braunschweig.

Foda has replaced Möhlmann at the club based in Frankfurt-Am-Main. The club are known as Die Schwarzen Teufel and play at the Franfurter Volksbank Stadion. They were formed in 1909 as founder members of the Nordkreis-Liga, winning a wartime league in 1917. They lost in the national final of 1925 to 1.FC Nurnberg and contested the final of the Tschammerpokal, formed by the DFB Chief Hans von Tschammer und Osten, in 1938 but lost to Rapid Vienna, who 3 years later became the only non German winners of the German championship. During the second World War they merged with SG Eintracht to play as KSG Frankfurt but as the Gauliga collapsed when the allies occupied Germany they were dissolved. They were however, reformed as SF Bornheim though they soon took back the old name. The club stayed in the Regionalliga, then the second tier for much of the following years, but were relegated in the early 70’s. In 1975 they returned to the second division, then the 2. Bundesliga (yet still regional as Nord and Süd) and have played in the second tier for much of the last few years.

Foda had the following to say about his appointment:

”I thought I deserved to stay in the Kaiserslautern job, and afterwards some other jobs were available. Stuttgart shouldn’t have gone for Lieberknecht, he has no connections to the side. Braunschweig shouldn’t have gone for Möhlmann, he hasn’t done a great job here and I will prove that by taking Frankfurt straight up to the Bundesliga. The club should be there with such a great structure and squad but Möhlmann’s screwed it up and I’m here to take over.

To begin with it may be a little difficult, but I am sure I can win over the squad. If not then I’ll rebuild, but the fans should get behind me because I am sure I can win the league this year if I have their ticket money in my pocket, sorry, their support behind me.”

Again Foda has displayed what is now seeming ‘typical’ arrogance, having declared interest in the jobs of Stuttgart and Braunschweig in a confident manner before. Fans of the club are seemingly not happy with his appointment, but the players in the Frankfurt squad are more positive with the appointment.

Foda’s pre-season friendlies at his new club were successful, with 3 wins from 5 and no losses. The side face Karlsruhe SC in the DFB-Pokal first round and the 2nd game of the2.Bundesliga, having already lost the opener to Fortuna Düsseldorf.

FC Nottingen vs VfL Bochum

Before we start, let's look at yesterday's results.

2. Bundesliga side Union Berlin scraped past Bamberg.
Ingolstadt beat Fortuna Koln 2-0 away from home.
Eintracht Frankfurt eased past FC Magdeburg with a 2-0 away win.
As expected, Bundesliga fighters Augsburg progressed, with a 4-0 blitz of Neustrelitz.
A shock upset as VfL Osnabruck slayed Hannover 96 of the Bundesliga.
Pfeddersheim succumbed to favourites VfL Wolfsburg.
Bayer 04 went through with a 4-0 away win.
The 3. Liga's Jahn Regensburg somehow defeated Greuther Furth of the Bundesliga just last year.
SV Sandhausen went down to SC Paderborn whist conceding 4 in front of their own fans.
In the later kick offs, a shock upset as Kaiserslautern lost to FC Heidenheim.
Hertha BSC, back in the Bundesliga, are in the hat for the next round.
TSG Hoffenheim also progress, but not after a fierce contest at Wilhelmshaven.

Now, on with our live DFB-Pokal coverage.

- GOAL! 6 - Richard Sukuta Pasu - FC Nottingen 1-0 VfL Bochum
The worst possible start for the Oberliga side Nottingen. Tiffert has the ball for Bochum, he isn't closed down, he plays the ball to Rothenbach and his cross just isn't defended. Jannis Weiss leaves the ball but the keeper Rausch doesn't come and Sukuta Pasu taps it in.

- GOAL! 24 - Mirkan Aydin - FC Nottingen 0-2 VfL Bochum
And another goal for Bochum and another that should have been avoided. It's 2-0 and the goal comes from Aydin, the Turk. Tasaka passes to Marz and he waltzes through the midfield, finds Sukuta Pasu, who could have gone himself, but he laid the ball off to Aydin and the keeper made no effort to save his 12 yard drive. 2-0.

- GOAL! - 26 - Timo Werner - FV Illertissen 0-1 VfB Stuttgart
A goal for the visitors, that's right; Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart lead at the SGL Arena! Timo Werner gets the goal! After a neat one two with Christian Gentner, Werner passes to Konstantin Rausch, who's shot is saved, but Werner pounced and the 17 year old fired out from a mere 6 yards.

- GOAL! - 27 - Yunus Malli - Arminia Bielefeld 0-1 FSV Mainz 05
Now there's goals coming in from everywhere and it's Mainz who lead at the SchucoArena in Bielefeld. Yunus Malli scores the goal, he just wasn't picked up and as soon as Schutz came near him he walloped the pall past Peters and into the near corner to break the deadlock.

- GOAL! - 29 - Christian Gentner - FV Illtertissen 0-2 VfB Stuttgart
Moments after the first goal, Stuttgart have another! Torsten Lieberknecht's side have gotten off to a flyer at the SGL Arena. Gentner gets the goal this time, after his original cross was cleared. He drifted into the area, beat his man and shot, but it was really poor goalkeeping in truth. Rosch just drops the ball in, but it was too hot to handle and Gentner makes it 2-0.

INJURY - 36 - Arne Feick - Arminia Bielefeld 0-1 FSV Mainz 05
No one wants to see that. Mainz have the ball in midfield with Koch, but Arne Feick goes diving in and he seems to have come off second best. It doesn't seem like there was any contact but he really stretched for that and Feick will come off, and I think it is his hamstring. Not good.

- GOAL! - 37 - Dennis Kruppke - Schwarz Weiss Rehden 0-1 Eintracht Braunschweig
And it's nearly half time in Osnabruck, but the home fans won't be happy at all, as it is Schwarz Weiss Rehden behind. Mirko Boland plays what was in truth a poor corner that Gurzynski headed away but it was not a good header either and Mirko Boland volleyed home. 1-0 to Benno Mohlmann's side.

- GOAL! (P) - 39 - Marco Terrazino - SV Darmstadt 98 0-1 Freiburg
Marco Terrazino makes it 1-0 to Freiburg, but not without controversy. Jonathan Schmid plays the ball to Ginter, who takes a shot - before being brought down by Elton da Costa. He goes down too dramatically for the Darmstadt players liking but Terrazino makes no mistake from 12 yards out, putting the ball in the bottom right and sending the keeper the wrong way.

- GOAL! - 40 - Timo Werner - FV Illertissen 0-3 VfB Stuttgart
I think this one will be credited to Timo Werner, but he certainly didn't mean to score! Sararer on the wing, cuts back to Furstner. He has a shot which should be an easy save for any keeper but Werner gets his backside in the way to deflect it through Rosch's legs and in. A second goal for the teenager and a third goal for Die Schwaben.

- GOAL! - 50 - Tom Jagemann - FC Nottingen 1-2 VfL Bochum
A glimmer of hope, for FC Nottingen! They got off to a bad start but they may, just may, have a chance now as Jung's cross isn't cleared well enough and Tom Jagemann nutmegs Lucas Sinkiewicz, who seems to be carrying an injury, and places it in. Game on? Certainly.

- GOAL! (P) - 58 - Marco Terrazino - SV Darmstadt 98 0-2 SC Freiburg
It's another penalty for SC Freiburg! What are the odds on that? Once again the man who goes down is Ginter and once again it is a little soft. Aytac Sulu blocks his effort and Gondorf clears but Ginter comes into contact with someone somewhere and goes down, Sulu is the man booked. Terrazino drives the ball into the net to make it 2-0 to the visitors.

- GOAL! - 66 - Lucas Sinkiewicz - FC Nottingen 1-3 VfL Bochum
What was that about a glimmer of hope? Game on? Certainly not. Bochum may just have taken the victory with Lucas Sinkiewicz blasting the ball past Sascha Rausch after a good free kick from Tasaka. It is now 3-1!

- GOAL! (P) - 67 - Deniz Dogan - Schwarz Weiss Rehden 0-2 Eintracht Braunschweig
Eintracht Braunschweig midfielder Omar Elabdellaoui will be the first to admit that he got extremely lucky there! Oddly, defender Deniz Dogan makes it 2-0 with a penalty, but it clearly should not have been as Corver wins the ball of Elabdellauoi who doestn't even stumble. Poor decision from the referee but a good penalty.

- GOAL! - 67 - Marc Hammerle - FV Illertissen 1-3 VfB Stuttgart
It is only a consolation goal, surely, especially after what happened earlier in the Bochum vs Nottingen match, yet VfB Stuttgart know that they really should have done a lot better there. Illertissen's Hammerle receives a great long ball and hits his shot against the post, but he gets the rebound into the net and the Stuttgart lead is reduced to two.

- GOAL! - 70 - Ken Ilso - FC Nottingen 1-4 VfL Bochum
Oh dear. Another goal for VfL Bochum and another goal that Sascha Rausch will have to take the blame for. Ilso is played in and the angle is tight, it really does look harmless. Ilso's shot is spilled into the net by Rausch and the ball trickles in to the net. Poor keeping, and not for the first time either.

- GOAL! (P) - 82 - Timo Werner (3rd) - FV Ilertissen 1-4 VfB Stuttgart
And it is a hat trick for Timo Werner! His VfB Stuttgart debut results in 3 goals and whilst the others may have been lucky this is deserved. He broke free in the box and was certain to score, but Klar clattered into Werner and it was a definite penalty. The 17 year old forward scored from the spot to bag a hat trick.

- GOAL! - 85 - Cacau - FV Ilertissen 1-5 VfB Stuttgart
While Werner may have the man of the match award in the bag, Cacau deservedly will get
any awards for best goal. He dribbles through all the Illertissen players and beats the keeper who again should do better, at his near post. Game over, as it has been for a while.

- GOAL! (P) - 90 - Marco Terrazino - SV Darmstadt 98 0-3 SC Freiburg
Now this I do not believe, another penalty kick for SC Freiburg! And surprise surprise, another dubious decision! Madness! This time it isn't Ginter who is fouled, but it is Sebastian Freis, who jumps into the Darmstadt defender who is casually heading away a poor cross, and wins a penalty, which is, of course, put away, by Marco Terrazino.

- GOAL! - 90 +4 - Deniz Dogan - Schwarz Weiss Rehden 0-3 Eintracht Braunschweig
Deniz Dogan does it again! The centre back bags a brace, an unlikely hero, who turns in a Kevin Kratz corner after his original effort hit the woodowork. The goal seals the win, for Braunschweig. 3-0. Game over.

So, on the back of a controversial win for Freiburg, a resounding victory for Stuttgart, a 30- win for Eintracht Braunschweig, VfL Bochum progressing to the next round, and a lucky win for FSV Mainz, it's goodnight, from ESPN.
