October brought my first ever Second City derby against the Blue Noses from across Birmingham. During my first spell at Villa, they had remained in the Championship so I never got the pleasure of beating them.
After the Milan derby and all the hostility, I was well prepared and wanted to make sure the bragging rights were Claret and Blue.
7 points from the 3 games prior had us going in to the game with confidence….
HERE WE GO...
Villa Park was a cauldron of noise and the atmosphere was electric. The Milan derby had electricity but it was a different kind.
There were nerves but local boy, Gabby Agbonlahor put us in a fourth minute lead before Boyata nodded in Iancu's corner on 22'.
Matt Lowton had a goal disallowed on 43' and it looked like we were going to destroy our poor city rivals. The chances never materialised in to goals but the 3 points were what everyone in Claret & Blue craved and the team duly delivered.
FINAL SCORE: Aston Villa 2-0 Birmingham City
The remainder of the month saw us defeat Middlesbrough in the league at the Riverside while we advanced in to the Capital One Cup Quarter Finals after claiming another Premier League scalp buy eliminating Swansea on penalties in their own back yard.
We were paired with fellow Championship side Wigan in the next round.
