The End Of An Era

Sad news for Arsenal fans, and fans of football in general this lunchtime, as Arsène Wenger retires from football management.

The Frenchman had been in charge at Arsenal for seventeen years, making him the longest serving manager of the club. Before that he had a spell at AS Monaco, where he signed the likes of Thierry Henry, Glen Hoddle and Jürgen Klinsmann. He was dismissed by the club in 1994. However, after Marseille were found guilty of match fixing in 1994, he claimed that the impact of bribery and corruption had influenced his decision to leave France.

Before he took over at Arsenal however, he spent two seasons at Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight, where he received the J. League Manager of the Year award in his first season.

When Bruce Rioch was sacked from Arsenal in 1996, Johan Cruyff was the bookies favourite to take over the vacant post. However, Arsenal fans were shocked when Wenger, who was virtually unknown in English football, was appointed. A month before he was chosen, he had advised the club to sign Patrick Vieira, who would later go on to become a club legend and captain the team. He proved his doubters wrong in just his second season by winning the Premier League and FA Cup. He brought in his former player Henry in 1999. The Frenchman would later make a name for himself as one of the greatest players in world football. Wenger would later lead the team to earn the famous "Invincibles" title after going the entirety of the 2003/2004 season unbeaten in the league.

Despite Wenger's successes - three Premier League titles, four F.A. Cup trophies and a string of managerial awards to his name - he was never able to lead his club to UEFA Champions League glory.

Whilst Arsenal fans will be grieving their loss for the next few weeks, Wenger did leave a strong squad behind, with the recent signing of Mesut Özil adding to the quality. Fans will be hoping that the new manager of the club, whoever that may be, can get the best out of the talent at hand, and do the one thing Wenger never could - win the Champions League.

Really good introduction. Good luck.
i will read an arsenal story :)
Great start and good luck. Hopefully it doesn't go as bad as your last story!

Ex-Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann, 44, has been appointed as Arsenal's replacement for Arsène Wenger, who retired from management last week.

Before being approached for the job, Lehmann told reporters in Germany that he was looking to take up goalkeeping coaching, but the offer from his old club was clearly too tempting for the German, who made a total of 149 league appearances for the club. After beginning his senior career at Schalke, and became a legend at the club in 1997, after an impressive performance in his teams UEFA Cup Final penalty shootout victory over Inter Milan. This attracted interest from Italian giants A.C. Milan, and he signed for them in 1998. However, he didn't perform as expected, and was transferred back to Germany to sign for Borussia Dortmund. He joined Arsenal in 2003, as a replacement to David Seaman and played in every single match of the season that saw Arsenal earn their "Invincibles" title.

He stayed at the club until the end of the 2007-2008 season before returning to Germany for the third time, this time to Stuttgart. He retired in 2010, but came out of retirement in 2011 for his beloved Arsenal, when a goalkeeping injury crisis struck the club. However, he made just one appearance, and retired the following season, after becoming the oldest player to play for Arsenal.

Fans of the Gunners have told Sky Sports News of their optimism over Lehmann's appointment, stating that although he is a legend to many of the fans, he will need to do a lot of work to match up to Wenger's reign. In an introductory press conference, he told journalists that he is not afraid to spend big to build a title winning team, suggesting that he has huge confidence in his and the squads ability.
Good choice of mananger, always good when the club brings back a legend, but in Tottenham's case, not so much :/ :P .
Jens is a top character! Good luck :)
A great start to the story. Keep it up and good luck for the upcoming campaign.

Lehmann: Wenger A True Great

New Arsenal manager Jens Lehmann has described Arsène Wenger as "one of the true greats" of football management. The German spent a large part of his career playing under Wenger at Arsenal, and has told Sky Sports News that he considers it an honour that he was chosen as a suitable replacement to a manager with of Wenger's calibre. He also thanked Wenger for leaving such a talented squad behind, and promised to keep his legacy alive. He told Wenger that any advice that the Frenchman had to offer would be taken on board without any doubt.

When asked about his transfer policy, he told our reporter that he would not have a specific tendency when buying players, but he will be trying to build a "world-beating squad" at the Emirates. He plans to develop youth through the youth system in most cases, rather than buy from other clubs, but has said that there may be one or two exceptions to that.
Very nic start! Good luck :)
Good luck :)

Diego Costa has left the club after agreeing a contract with English Premier League side Arsenal.

18 de July, 2013 - 19:32

The deal will see Atlético Madrid receive around €29 million (£24 million) for the Spanish star. Initially, Arsenal had made a bid of £30 million, which was accepted. However, Jens Lehmann pulled out of the deal for an unknown reason. Atlético Madrid fans are disappointed that he was let go, but understand that the price was a more than acceptable one. Arsenal were not the only club interested, with Paris Saint-Germain also reportedly ready to make a bid. However, they didn't act quickly enough, as the move to Arsenal was completed so soon. Costa, who is uncapped for Spain, will reportedly be earning around £60K per week.
Wow really nice signing. Hope he does well for you.

AS Roma have confirmed the departure of American midfielder Michael Bradley after they accepted a bid of £8 million yesterday evening.

Bradley joined Roma last summer, and was a regular in the team, but Rudi Garcia, who took over this summer, clearly felt that the midfielder, capped 82 times at international level, was not good enough for the Serie A side. Egyptian players may now be on the lookout for a move to the Emirates Stadium, as Bradley's father, Bob Bradley, is the current manager of the Egyptian national side. This marks Arsenal's second signing of the transfer window, with Diego Costa signing for them earlier this week.
That's a top signing! Get a top defensive midfielder next season and you have yourself a finished article :)
