Robbie Savage: Who Would Want To Manage Swansea?

Robbie Savage has used his job as a columnist for BBC Sport to speak about the current managerial situation at Welsh side Swansea City. The Swans, who are now preparing for their third consecutive season in the Barclays Premier League after becoming the first Welsh side to gain promotion to the Premier League, are currently on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Michael Laudrup and Welshman Robbie Savage, born in Wrexham, has had his say on the current situation at the Liberty Stadium and how the club can fix their reputation which has recently started to hit a downwards curve.

"The first thing I have to say on the situation at Swansea City is that they have to clear the air after the bust up between defenders Garry Monk and Chico Flores. One of the reasons that Michael Laudrup was sacked is because of the amount of bust-ups between the players, and I doubt that any new manager wants to start his reign with these bust-ups continuing. When you have an experienced player like Garry Monk, who is club captain, fighting with team-mates, you know something is not right on the training ground with their definitely being atmosphere problems. it makes you think who on earth would manage Swansea City? I've been told aswell that after this incident today, Garry Monk will no longer continue in his role of caretaker manager of Swansea City, which is a disappointment as from what I have heard off players at Swansea he is a leader in the dressing room, and i feel he could have really had an impact on the training ground until a permanent manager was appointed".

"The second thing is that will the new manager be able to keep a positive working relationship with the board of directors. It was rumoured that Laudrup has fallen out with chairman Huw Jenkins over the clubs lack of funding for his second season in charge, and the fact that they took a while to get going in the transfer market. Anyone who is hired as the manager will have to be professional when it comes to working with the board, and when they are given a budget, they will need to plan their signings around the given budget to strengthen the squad at hand. Obviously after Laudrup came out and mentioned the fact the board were not spending anything and were taking so long to make signings, it seems as if the board were then pressured to actually spend money, as they then went out and splashed the cash on players such as Wilfried Bony, Jonjo Shelvey and Jordi Amat".

"The final thing I want to mention is who could actually become the new manager of Swansea City? I have already asked the question of who on earth would want to manage them with all the bust-ups going on, but there has to be a manager who would like to manage the club. Michael Laudrup was a fantastic manager, and his style of football was similar to that of his predecessor Brendan Rodgers, and his legacy will be hard to follow even though he was only manager for one season. I've seen names thrown around social media such as Gianfranco Zola, Steve Clarke, Paul Clement and Luis Enrique to become the next manager of Swansea, and although they are all great managers, and in Clement's case a great coach, I do not believe any of these men are the right choice for Swansea. If i had to pick a name for the club to target, it would be Marcelo Bielsa, it is a mouth watering prospect for him to become manager, and his style of football is something the Swansea fans would most certainly be attracted to. If he becomes the manager then Swansea fans will praise the man who heralds from Argentina for attractive football and he could be the man to lead them to new heights. I wish the new manager luck for the upcoming season, and I'm sure the club will make the right choice as to who becomes their new manager".

Controversy As Swansea Hire New Manager

Swansea City have today announced their new manager to replace Michael Laudrup in the managerial hotseat at the Welsh club, but it comes with a side of controversy. In fact, the man who has replaced Michael Laudrup is his brother, Brian Laudrup. Laudrup, 44, has been hired at the Liberty Stadium to replace his brother Michael, which is not likely to go down well between the family, as Swansea’s decision to hire Brian is likely to anger Michael. He joins on a one year contract worth around £28,500 per week, despite having no managerial or coaching background and has been given the task to help the club challenge for an to improve on last season’s 9th placed finish in the Premier League and also to try and make an impact in the Europa League.

Laudrup was born in Vienna, Austria, when his father, Finn, was playing for Weiner Sport- Club, but played his international football for Denmark, which he was able to do because of his father’s Danish nationality. He began his career at Danish side Brondby, where he became a professional in 1986, and made 49 appearances and scored 13 goals before leaving the club in 1989, when he then signed for KFC Uerdingen 05, formerly known as Bayer Uerdingen. His spell at Uerdingen only lasted a year, playing 34 appearances and scoring 6 goals before switching across Germany to make the move to Bayern Munich in 1990. During his time at Bayren Munich, he made 53 appearances and scoring 11 goals, whole also during his time at the club, he said new executives Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were creating chaos in the team through their public criticism of the younger Bayern players. He then moved to Italy in 1992, where he began the first of a two year spell in the country with Fiorentina, making 31 appearances and scoring 5 goals, but even with teammates such as Gabriel Batistuta and Stefen Effenberg the club were relegated, which lead to Laudrup’s departure from the Viola. In 1993, he moved to AC Milan, and because of the 3 foreigner rule in place in Serie “A” at the time, and with stars such as Marcel Desailly and Marco Van Basten in the team, he only played a handful of matches due to squad rotation, making just 9 appearances and scoring 1 goal. At the end of the season in 1994, Laudrup was offered an escape route from Italy by Rangers manager Walter Smith. The project at Rangers, in which the club were seeking European glory, attracted Laudrup and he sealed a £2.3m switch to Glasgow, and proved he was very happy at the club, as 5 months into his spell in Scotland he rejected a move to Spanish giants Barcelona, in which manager Walter Smith said to the Dane in shock, “Brian, you’ve turned down Barcelona”, in which his response was, “I would prefer to play against Falkirk”. His time in Scotland was filled with success, as he helped Rangers complete their nine-in-a-row sweep of the Scottish League Title and was awarded Danish player of the year twice, taking his total of achieving the award a record 4 times. During his time at Ibrox, he made 116 appearances and scored 33 goals, before he moved to English side Chelsea in 1998. However, his time in London was unhappy, and before he had even kicked a ball for Chelsea, he tried to get out of his contract and contacted them about this before France 98. He claimed that if he had known about the squad rotation system, he would have thought twice about joining the London side, but was told he would not be going anywhere and he would have to remain under contract. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he made just 7 appearances due to injury and the squad rotation which made him fall out with the club. In spring 1999, he then returned to Denmark for a brief spell with FC Copenhagen, the main rivals of former club Brondby. He made 12 appearances for them, scoring twice before leaving them at the end of the season to move to Holland to join Ajax due to family problems. He scored 13 goals in 31 games at Ajax in a successful one season stint in Holland, before retiring at the end of the season at the age of 31 after injuries meant he could not play another season. In his international career, he made 82 appearances for the Denmark National team, scoring 21 goals, and played a part in Denmark’s success in winning the 1992 European Championships and the 1995 Confederations Cup.

Swansea City fans and other football fan alike were delighted with Laudrup’s words at a news conference in which he was unveiled by the club, as he gave an inspirational message to the fans at the club, where he said, “I would like to thank the board of Swansea City for hiring me and giving me the opportunity to manage the club in the Premier League, which is considered to be the best club in the world. I hope that the fans will give me the chance to bring my own ideas into the club so we can try and get things ticking and start racking up points on the board. I know many of the fans feel that my lack of coaching experience will hinder my spell at the club, but the chairman, Huw Jenkins, would have never of hired me if he did not feel I could make an impact at the club, and if I did not feel I could either, I would not have taken the job at the club, and now I just hope I can continue the legacy of my brother Michael at the club and hopefully the fans will not forget his work last season".
