Shelvey show shocks shambolic Greeks

Greece 0-3 England

England U21s remained top of their 2015 European Championships qualifying group after a comprehensive victory over Greece, where Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey scored twice.

Before kick-off England had learned of Armenia U21s holding qualification challengers Republic of Ireland U21s to a draw, meaning the Lion Cubs could streak 3pts clear with a win.

And win they did against a dire Greece youth outfit, Jonjo Shelvey opening the scoring with a bit of opportunistic finishing following a goal-mouth scramble.

Shelvey scored again in the first half, doubling his and England's advantage heading into half-time.

England played extremely well and there was never any danger of bottom team Greece troubling them.

England again pushed forward throughout the second half, but Greece were parking 10 men behind the ball and it became an extremely frustrating task for England to break through and score.

Sherwood encouraged his team to score more throughout the second 45

Though on 65 minutes, Ravel Morrison broke free of the defence and lashed home a wonderful effort, sealing all 3pts for Tim Sherwood and the England U21s, who now have a comfortable 3pt advantage at the top of Group E with three games to go.

England don't play another qualifier until Republic of Ireland in early March 2014, today is November 5.

Tim Sherwood Post-Match Comments:

"We came into the game expecting them to make it difficult and they did. I thought Jonjo was exceptional today, what a performance and he was desperately unlucky not to score his third from about 40 yards! It's a good win and one we're keen to push on from and secure qualification as soon as we can. We've got Australia in the friendly this week and then no competetive match until March, interesting to see how much my squad changes before then."

Sherwood proud of fringe players

England 1-0 Australia

Tim Sherwood was proud of his players after making 9 changes for the friendly with Australia, which his team came out of 1-0 winners.

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Lee Nicholls was particularly impressive between the sticks, and will give Sherwood food for thought should he continue to impress for his club.

The first-half was a slow one but Australia were having more of the ball, but resilient defence and well thought out possession play from England made it difficult for Australia to score.

Wigan keeper Nicholls was in unbeatable form

Neither side could score before the break and international friendlies such as this one will be often seen to fizzle out into a draw.

HT: England U21 0-0 Australia U21

The second half was a brighter and more attacking one from England, and Saido Berahino scored from what looked an impossible angle on 58 minutes, delighting Tim Sherwood on the sidelines.

West Brom striker Berahino dedicated the goal to his late father

England held on to the win, but Tim Sherwood will have been pleased regardless of the result as he was able to see how good the squad depth is in his team, with no player letting him down.

Tim Sherwood Post-Match Comments:

"I was really really pleased to see how well the lads did who have been on the fringes of the team but not getting in for competetive matches. They adapted well to our usual system and I'm proud of them for winning the game, though that wasn't the sole objective. If we'd have lost 2-0 but looked good and fringe lads had impressed, I'd have been just as happy as I am now."

QPR want Tim after 'Arry leaves for Toon

Queens Park Rangers are believed to have placed England U21 head coach and former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood at the top of their shortlist whilst on the hunt for a new manager following Harry Redknapp's departure to Newcastle United.

Sherwood left Tottenham before the start of this season (2013/14) to become England U21 head coach, but reports suggest that Redknapp has recommended the 44-year old former Spurs, Blackburn and Norwich midfielder to take over the reigns at Loftus Road.

Redknapp gave Sherwood his first coaching role whilst at Tottenham but was sacked 3 years later before joining QPR in November 2012.

'Arry then decided it was time to leave QPR whilst 2nd placed in the Championship after being approached for the Newcastle United job following the axe of Alan Pardew.

It is not believed that Tim Sherwood has yet been formally approached for the job but seems the outright favourite amongst all bookmakers.

The FA and Tim Sherwood are both yet to comment on the reports.

Sherwood plays down QPR link

England U21 head coach Tim Sherwood has moved to reduce speculation that he will become Queens Park Rangers manager following Harry Redknapp's departure to Newcastle United.

Sherwood, 44, managed Tottenham Hotspur for a six month period, from January to June last season when he jumped at the chance to coach England's youth team.

Redknapp hired Sherwood as development director whilst managing the North London club, and is believed to have recommended his former assistant for the QPR vacancy.

Sky Sports News spoke to Sherwood in a live telephone interview live on SSN this afternoon, and the England U21 boss played down the reports.

He said: "Listen, I've got a job to do and at the minute I'm doing it well, so no club could tempt me away from happiness, and I am happy in this role.

"Obviously it's flattering when you are linked to vacancies because it means that people think you're good at your job.

"But there has been no contact between me and QPR and as far as I'm aware there probably won't be any - so in reality we're discussing a dead story."
Some very good updates! Great start in the Euro's!

Josh: Wondering whether Tim will move to Loftus Road already? Stay tuned!

We have contacted Tim Sherwood - Fernandes

Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes claims to have contacted England U21 head coach Tim Sherwood about the managerial vacancy at Loftus Road, but has refused to comment on whether Sherwood showed interest in the position.

"We have spoken to Tim about coming to Loftus Road and he did not say no but he did not say yes.

"Sherwood is our number one target, that is well known.

"Whether we can do a deal at this stage, it is impossible to know."

Sherwood has only been in charge of the England youth team for a matter of months but has masterminded their climb to the top of their European Championships qualifying group after a difficult start.

Fernandes has installed Sherwood as his number one target to replace Redknapp

QPR sit 2nd in the Championship and are looking to appoint a new manager as soon as possible.

We have tried to contact Tim Sherwood but nor he or the Football Association would comment on the matter.

Sherwood's odds have been slashed today and it is widely expected that QPR will announce the England U21 head coach as their new man in charge tomorrow evening.
If Sherwood accepts hope he stays as U21's manager too breeding a great young team
Interesting....I hope he stays; doing a good job!

Sherwood rejects QPR approach

England U21 head coach Tim Sherwood has publicly stated that he will not join Queens Park Rangers whilst still under contract with The FA.

Recent reports have suggested that Sherwood was set to replace Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road, but whilst Sherwood admits he has spoken to QPR, he was never likely to leave his current post with work left to do.

R's chairman Tony Fernandes installed the former Spurs manager as his favourite to replace now Newcastle chief Redknapp, as did all leading bookmakers, but now he is out of the running after turning down the opportunity to return to club management.

"Sometimes I don't know where these stories start, but in fairness this was a legit one.

"I was flattered by the contact and the deal offered to me, but I am a man of principal and won't leave England youth until I have completed everything I want to achieve here.

"I am very happy in this job and lucky to be part of such a good set-up."

It is now thought that former England U21 head coach and current Aston Villa technical director Gareth Southgate will take the position, after holding lengthy talks with the club throughout the week.
Score! I reckon you'll get a lot of reward managing the u21s; seeing players you grow to love playing for their country!

Sherwood only picks 20 players

Mason Bennett has been rewarded by Sherwood for good club form

Tim Sherwood has announced a small 20 man squad ahead of their crucial U21 European Championship Qualifier with Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

It has been 4 and a half months since England U21s played a competitive match, but finished 2013 in fine form.

Now in March, and level with Republic of Ireland on 12pts with three games remaining but one in hand over the group leaders - this will be seen as Sherwood's biggest match so far.

Luke Shaw and Raheem Sterling were called-up to Roy Hodgson's England first-team and therefore unavailable for the Under-21s.

England in control after important draw

England 1-1 Ireland

England remained level on points but with a game in hand over opponents Ireland in the race for qualification to the 2015 U21 European Championships.

England have two matches remaining (Greece and Armenia) while the Irish only have Armenia left to play.

The whole game had a nervy edge to it, both teams desperate not to lose - especially Ireland who would have known defeat would cost them qualification.

The scoring was opened on 28 minutes when Ireland forward Frankie Sutherland put Tim Sherwood'd young lions on the back foot with a wonderful volley from the edge of the penalty area.

England were struggling to break down a defensive Ireland team and couldn't find a way in to goal in the opening 45.

HT: England U21 0-1 Republic of Ireland U21

The second half carried much the same sort of football. Panicky, nervy and tentative play - keeping the ball seemed an almost impossible task for both teams.

England, however, did find the net and equalise through in-form Sunderland striker Connor Wickham on the stroke of 55 minutes.

England U21 coach Tim Sherwood celebrated the vastly important equaliser

Ireland held on and salvaged a draw at Bramall Lane, and will be praying that Greece and Armenia take points from England - though the lions now sit in a controlling position behind Ireland on goal-difference but with an all important game in hand.

Tim Sherwood Post-Match Comments:

"It's disappointing not to have won the game and all but put Ireland completely out of sight, but we know what we've got to do now and I'm confident now that we'll qualify with ease in our next two games against Greece over here and Armenia away. Connor Wickham has been a god send really in this qualification campaign - when the team as a collective get us into a mess, Connor seems to be the trustworthy lad we can rely on to dig us out of it. That's not how we want it to be as it piles a lot of pressure on the lad - but we're almighty thankful that he's around. I'm just hoping Roy hasn't been watching because next thing we know he'll be in the first-team (laughs)."
