loving the story. cant wait to see the actual tournament

England a point from qualification

England 4-1 Greece

England will qualify for the 2015 European U21 Championship in Prague should they avoid defeat in their final match against Armenia

England were ahead after just 9 minutes, Tom Ince thumping the lions ahead from just outside the area.

Sunderland hot-shot Connor Wickham then doubled England's advantage with his sixth goal in 7 qualifiers, before debutant Jesse Lingard scored to put the game all-but out of sight.

The second half was slower, but the highlight will have been goal number four for England, Lingard again thrashing past the the Greek keeper from 30 yards.

England now only need a point in their last game in Armenia

Greece did get one back late on but it was all far too late and nothing but a consolation goal.

Tim Sherwood Post-Match Comments:

"I enjoyed the game. I thought we moved the ball well and we never gave Greece the opportunity to upset us. I thought Jesse was tremendous on his debut today and now all we need is a point from Armenia, hopefully we'll go and do that then spend a few months preparing how we'll attack winning the European Championship.

Late Armenia goal topples England

Armenia 1-0 England

England have failed to qualify for the 2015 European U21 Championships after conceding in the 93rd minute against Armenia, when all they needed was a draw to qualify.

England looked on top throughout the game but missed out on several opportunities to make a breakthrough.

Sunderland wonderkid Connor Wickham was controversially judged to have been offside after slotting the ball home on 10 minutes, half an hour before missing a penalty that would have made England overwhelming favourites to sit top of Group E.

HT: Armenia U21 0-0 England U21

England kept the ball very well in the second half but again just could not score - Lingard hit the post and John Stones headed off the cross-bar on 85 minutes.

But heartbreak ensued for England U21 fans and Tim Sherwood, who appeared inconsolable at the final whistle as his tears were taken down the tunnel into privacy by Nicky Butt, who had been appointed onto Sherwood's staff recently.

The heartbreak was that an Armenia free-kick in the 93rd minute was headed home by Hakobyan - with the referee blowing the final-whistle straight from kick-off.

Tim Sherwood cuts a forlorn figure as England fail to qualify

This meant that even though England's goal difference was higher than Ireland's, they both finished on 16pts and because Ireland had beaten England and taken a draw too, Ireland qualified.

Sherwood future hangs in the balance as contract extension stalled by FA

Metro understands that England U21 flop Tim Sherwood has had his contract negotiations (that were underway following the draw with Ireland) stalled after his teams failure to qualify for the U21 Euro 2015 tournament in Prague.

The young lions needed just a draw of any score to sit top of the group and qualify, but conceding in the 93rd minute to Armenia meant they lost 1-0 and finished second behind an Ireland team they failed to beat in qualifying.

Sherwood was handed a one-year contract in the summer of 2013, and has now reached its climax.

Reports from leading sources are telling us that Sherwood is unlikely to be kept in charge, despite his desire to carry on as head coach.

The FA are expected to make announcement regarding the future of Tim Sherwood in the next 24 hours.

FA statement: Tim Sherwood

THE FA WILL NOT BE RENEWING TIM SHERWOOD'S CONTRACT AS ENGLAND U21'S HEAD COACH

The Football Association today advised Tim Sherwood they will not be renewing his contract.

The England Under-21s Coach was informed of the decision following Club England Board discussions.

Tim Sherwood has worked as England Under-21s Coach since June 2013, failing to guide our nation's youth talent to the European Championships in 2015.

His contract expired following the last match against Armenia.

FA Chairman Greg Dyke said: "I'd like to thank Tim Sherwood for his hard work. Nobody can doubt his commitment to the job throughout his time as Under-21 Coach.

"He has done extremely well in coaching our young men on the training ground, but after the disappointment of failing to qualify for Euro 2015, we believe it is time to change Coach.

"On behalf of everyone at The FA I'd like to wish Tim well for the future."

Dyke added: "It is important the organisation now considers the best approach for the role of Under-21 Coach and how this works best within the overall England structure before making any new appointment."

Sherwood sacked

The FA have released a statement on their website announcing the departure of Tim Sherwood from the England U21 set-up.

Sherwood had been in charge for just over a year, and led the 'Lion Cubs' in all Euro 2015 qualifiers, but missed out on qualification after defeat in the final match in Armenia.

Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes are in contention to take the role in a co-management capacity, but Chris Hughton remains the odds-on favorite to become new England U21 head coach.
Aw, bye bye Tim! You will (not) be missed!!!!! B)

On a serious note, sucks that you got sacked, hopefully you'll be able to get a new job quickly!
