Milton Keynes Dons: Writing History

No history? Who cares, we'll write our own. Join me as I attempt to take everybody's least favourite Football League club up the football pyramid, one home grown player at a time.

Episode 3 - Promising Start

Break the f*ckers' legs!

Name: Dele Alli
Date of Birth: 11 April 1996
Previous Clubs: None
Coach Report:

THREE MK Dons youngsters have expressed their delight at breaking into the first team.

Dons trio Giorgio Rasulo, Gedeon Okito and Dele Alli have each enjoyed first team breakthroughs at the start of the season and a series of eyecatching performances have put them in contention for a more regular role in the side.

Highly rated Rasulo, 16, born in England but eligible to represent Italy - having already been allowed to train with the Azzurrini (Italy's Under 21s) - was reportedly wanted by a handful of top clubs in the summer, but, having chosen to stay in Milton Keynes, has since cemented his place in the first XI for the first time, often confining the much more experienced Luke Chadwick to the bench.

Rasulo, like Delle Alli, a player one year his senior, both debuted for the club last season, but the opening games of 2013/14 have proved to be a breakthrough run for the pair, who continue to attract interest from much bigger sides. For Alli, 17, the experience has been one he'll never forget.
"As a kid growing up in the town, we didn't have a Football League club yet, so never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd be a starter for a Milton Keynes team," smirks Alli. "Of course I made my first appearance last season, and I felt great then, but to be playing the full 90 week in, week out much surpasses that feeling. I love it, long may it continue!"

Unlike the midfield pairing, defender Okito was never in or around the first team picture last season, with his favoured left back spot long occupied by club legend Dean Lewington. However, having given the 16 year old his full league debut against Bristol City at the weekend, Dons boss Karl Robinson responded to criticism from some sections of the home support, apparently dismayed at the sight of long-serving Lewington on the bench.
"Obviously I understand their frustration, and I can assure them it wasn't an easy decision to make. But everyone's got to start somewhere, we gave the lad a go against Gillingham, (in the League Cup) and he did well enough to convince me he deserved more games."

MK Dons next game is a trip to Championship outfit Blackpool, for the 2nd round of the season's Capital One Cup. Tickets for the tie are available from tomorrow (Sunday).

Solid performance with a rotated side, and now we have a trip to the seaside to enjoy, and hopefully cause an unlikely upset!

Hard not to give it to Handling, after a prolific first few games sees him score or provide all but one of our goals in the league, claiming the Man of the Match award on one occasion. Jordan Spence and Dele Alli put up a fight, but it just had to be Handling.
Once again, thank you all very much for reading, your comments are hugely appreciated! :D

Episode 4 - The First Loss

Finally, get in there!

Name: Dean Lewington
Date of Birth: 18 May 1984
Previous Clubs: Wimbledon
Coach Report:

ONE of the Football League's longest serving players admits he is "content" at his lack of game time

"Dropped". That was the word echoing in one player's mind at first, but now he is beginning to come to terms with a new chapter in his career. Left-back Dean Lewington is the only player to have played in every season for MK Dons, and one of only two former Wimbledon players - the other being goalkeeper David Martin - currently in the club's first team squad.

However, the club captain, 29, is currently experiencing his first season as a rotation player at the League One outfit, with relatively unknown 16 year old Gedeon Okito often being utilised in Lewington's prefered position. The change is thought to be a result of the veteran's under-par performances of late, with youngster Okito - enjoying his first spell in the first team - providing far more solid performances than the experienced defender.

Though initially dismayed by the bizarre switch, fans have since settled to the newcomer, with most rating the teenager highly on club forums, and Lewington himself admits he has similar feelings.
"It's understandable, really. I began the season as a starter but my performances weren't great by my standards, and the gaffer's clearly noticed. He's given the kid a few games to settle, and he's done well, so I get why I'm being confined to the bench," explains Lewington.

"Right now I'm content with the amount of time on the pitch I'm getting, even as much as I'd love to be a starter. Gedeon clearly has a bright future ahead of him, and I wish him all the best, but I'll be doing everything I can in training to convince the boss to give me my place back."

An almost constant figure in the Dons teams of past and present, Lewington has been limited to cup games and short cameos from the substitute's bench in recent weeks. Though he remains commited to the club for the short-term, the defender remained coy on his future.
"Will I still be at the club next season? Probably," assures Lewington, "but after that? We'll see. I'm out of contract in a couple of years, and I'll have a chat with the manager come then to assess what we'll do after that. Until then, I'll continue to give everything I've got for this wonderful club."

MK Dons boss Karl Robinson refused to comment on the matter, instead opting to congratulate fellow youngster Giorgio Rasulo on his first appearance for Italy Under-21s, during his latest press conference.

Overall a decent run of games, we're looking very solid at home although I'd like to pick up a few more points away from stadium:mk. The two losses were raw FM bullsh*t, nothing else to be said really, though I'm disappointed to have lost the unbeaten start, but oh well, it was always going to happen. Onwards and Upwards!

Coach Report:

Ben Reeves was the one scoring the goals this episode, but it was Irish U21 international Carruthers who put in the best performances, in my opinion. A stunning goal against Notts County, his first for the club, and a few outstanding games from midfield have convinced me to hand the award to yet another loanee. It's gonna be a big hole to fill, when he leaves.
As always, thanks a lot for reading, I hope you're enjoying the story so far as much as I am! :D
