An Introduction

Hey, FMSers!

I’m Nonesuch, a fellow Football Manager addict, and, obviously, this is my first story on FM Scout. I love football, Football Manager, and putting pen to paper fingers to keys, so ever since stumbling upon the site a few months ago in search of a player faces pack, I’ve been itching to give this a shot. So, here goes nothing.

I’ll be managing Flamengo with an aim to restore Brazil’s best-supported club to the heady heights of the Zico-led 1980’s. With the exception of a surprise Brasileirão win in 2009, Mengão has struggled for success, and certainly hasn’t seen much stability (neither in the table, nor in their finances) for quite some time. More on club history later. Ideally, I’ll be bringing that success and stability the Flamengo faithful crave by developing the impressive youth squad already on offer and importing some of my favorite South Americans currently plying their trade in Europe.

Wish me luck, eh?
Good luck mate, never really followed a Brazilian story! Hopefully you can sort out the national team too!
Welcome mate! It's great to see a Brazilian story on here, I've always loved the system especially the sheer amount of silverware you can win, good luck!
@ joethequin: Thank you, sir! And, if the national team calls, I'd be glad to see what I can do.

@ fzemdegs: Thanks! I'm hoping the variety of the competitions keeps things fresh.

A Little History
(Text found at In Bed With Maradona).

“At the beginning of the [20th] Century, Fluminense was associated with the aristocracy. Vasco da Gama was the sign of the Portuguese in Brazil and the memory of the colonialism was still alive. Who could beat the power of the aristocracy and the power of the colonialists? Flamengo was doing it.

“The club had the spirit of freedom of the teenagers who founded it. And this spirit was beating the aristocracy and the colonialists. It had been the way to conquer Rio de Janeiro. A way of conquering Brazil.”

- Marcel Pereira

“Flamengo is an elite club, who in a stroke of genius acquired the popular touch in the mid 30s. Just after the game professionalised they signed the leading 3 black players of the day - Leonidas (very much the prototype bad boy), Domingos da Guia and Fausto. At the time Rio was still the capital, with radio taking their games all over the country, and millions, especially in the north-east identified with their fortunes. Of course the late 70s early 80s Zico team won over lots of converts with the titles won and the style of its play, but the huge national following comes from the 30s.”

- Tim Vickery

loving the layout! good intro mate
I must admit, it's going to be hard to read this story - being a Botafogo fan, big rivals with Flamengo. However, due to the sheer lack of South American stories on here I guess I'll have to follow ;)
I love the layout :) It's interesting to see a south american story so I'll be following! Good luck
@ You two Australians: Why, thank you both!

@ Walter: Fair enough. Glad you're willing to look past it in digital football though ;)

Rui Pinheiro appointed new manager
26 December 2013

The club is thrilled to announce the appointment of Rui Pinheiro as our new manager on a one-year contract.

Rui, 40, will be taking the reins from caretaker manager Jaime de Almeida, to whom we extend a sincere thank you for his hard work during the waning months of the 2013 campaign. Jaime will stay on as assistant manager under Pinheiro.

This will be Rui's first managerial position, though it is by no means his first in a dugout. Following the end of his playing career, Pinheiro signed on as part of Fernando Santos's staff with the Greek national team in 2010. He had been working as an assistant manager under Santos since the beginning of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification cycle.

Rui enjoyed a successful playing career prior to taking up the whistle. Although he was born in Portugal, his career began with us, as some may remember, at the age of 18 whilst his father worked in Rio. After two seasons in Rubo-Negro, Pinheiro moved with his family back to Lisbon, embarking on a three-year stint with Benfica. He would go on to play in Italy with Parma, Spain with Sevilla, and Greece with PAOK at the end of his career. A heady, and tough-as-nails right full back, Pinheiro managed to amass 11 Portugal caps in an 18-year career.

Commenting on the appointment, Flamengo President Eduardo Bandeira de Mello said:

"I believe Rui Pinheiro is a rising star in football management, and look forward to seeing him get his start in the dugout here in Rio. Having shared his footballing philosophy with myself and the Flamengo board, I cannot help but feel optimistic for the future of our beloved club. I reckon we will see a blend of Brazilian flair and Greek canniness under Pinheiro, and I fully expect this combination to bring success to Mengão."

Pinheiro will be available to the media tomorrow afternoon for comment of his own.

(Note: This Rui Pinheiro fellow...not real. Ah, the parallel universes of FM.)
good luck!

This going to be great, good luck!
Good luck!
Despite my flag saying differently, I'm Australian too ;)

Good luck at the Mengão, see if you can please the trigger finger chairmen ;)
Good luck, this is looking really good :)
