Excerpts from Rui Pinheiro's introductory press conference

Flamengo Sempre was lucky enough to sneak a recording device in at new manager Rui Pinheiro's first press conference in charge. The highlights follow.

Q: You're a Flamengo boy, aren't you? You must be thrilled to be taking over where it all began.

Pinheiro: I might as well be. I'm from Lisbon, so, my first love was Benfica; but, my family moved to Rio when I was 14, and I took to Flamengo almost as soon as we landed. I was lucky enough to put the shirt on just four years later and...well, it seems I'm jumping right back in 22 years on. Some of my best friends are still in with the Torcida every home match, so I couldn't be happier to be back here.

Q: You arrive after back-to-back seasons in which Flamengo finished below mid-table in the Brasileirão. Can you stop the rot?

Pinheiro: If I didn't believe I could turn things around, I wouldn't have taken the job. It hurts to see any great club struggle like Mengão has done, but with Flamengo so close to my heart, it has been unbearable. Rest assured, I'll be working as hard as I can to get things back on track.

Q: How will your experience with the Greek national team translate to the club game in Brazil?

Pinheiro: To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure. I mean, I haven't been in training every day since I hung up my boots. But, that said, I did a lot of tactical scouting for Fernando and worked on it every single day I was in the job. My ability in that area, I'm sure, will translate just fine.

Q: Care to share what you'd like to do with the boys tactically?

Pinheiro: Not really. What I want to do and what I can do are two different things. I doubt you're interested in my philosophy, when it's not what this club is equipped for.

Q: Tell us anyway?

Pinheiro: I'll meet you halfway. Look, I'm not going to tell you what I'll be doing. That's suicide, supposing anyone else in the game is listening. But...I do admire what Antonio Conte does with Juventus. That's the kind of game I'd like to play, in an ideal world. However, Flamengo's current world isn't quite ideal, so, my preferences don't matter for much just yet.

Q: Could you speak a bit to your plans for player recruitment ahead of the 2014 season? Do we have another Ronaldinho-esque surprise in store?

Pinheiro: Ronaldinho? No, nothing like that. It's tough to make an intelligent transfer in January. As much as I'd like to sit here and tell you to get excited, I can only say that I'm looking to make the squad better in any way that I can. No promises.

Q: Have you spoken with any of the players yet? Perhaps more specifically, have you talked with Leonardo Moura about renewing his contract?

Pinheiro: Honestly, I haven't spoken with any of the boys as of yet. I'm meeting a few once I'm done in front of these microphones, though. As for Moura, he's the captain. He's very important to this side, so, the Director of Football and I will be talking to him soon to see where we stand, surely.
Alsooo, thanks to everyone for being so encouraging! You're all really nice 'round here.

Pinheiro meets the first team
27 December 2013

The players are gathered in the locker room of the famed Maracanã. New Flamengo boss Rui Pinheiro enters, club scarf still around his neck, having just posed for promotional pictures on one of football's most hallowed grounds.

"Boys," Pinheiro begins softly as he walks to the center of the dressing room. "Football history is littered with false dawns. It seems a new era begins the moment anything at a club changes." He chuckles quietly to himself. "Now, as you're all aware, a pretty big change was made at this club today."

Pinheiro begins to slowly turn, looking into the eyes of his new charges.

He starts again, with a bit more force.

"The media I just spoke with seems to think that a new era has begun at Flamengo with my appointment as manager. But I see twenty other faces in this room. Twenty other men with just as much ability to shape the future of this great club as I have. Twenty men whom will be asked over the coming days how different things are going to be because just one new man enters the dressing room."

Pinheiro removes the scarf from his neck and stares at the great, cloth Rubro-Negro crest in his hands for a few moments.

He sharply looks up, and starts to turn about the room again as he loosens the tie around his neck.

"This isn't a new dawn at Flamengo; at least not because of me. If things are going to change around here, it will be because of the twenty men in this room. It will be because of twenty men fighting for the shirt, for the hundreds of thousands of Flamengo supporters in Rio, for the millions in the rest of Brazil and around the world. If a new era is going to begin, you twenty men will start it yourselves. If the sun is to smile again on Flamengo, it will be because you will have worked harder than anyone else in South America on the pitch, on the training ground, at the chalkboard, to MAKE the sun smile upon us!"

His voice rose sharply at the end as he thrust the scarf to the floor.

"A new era didn't start today, boys," he said, slowly raising his gaze from the crumpled scarf at his feet to the eyes of Flamengo captain Leonardo Moura. "No, if one is to begin, that new era starts tomorrow in Lagoa. I'll see you boys at training." And with that, Pinheiro strode from the room, pounding on the Flamengo crest above the doorway as he passed.

Cheers erupt from the twenty men behind him.
great update, well written!

Maxwell returns to Brazil on loan
4 January 2014
http://www.le10sport.com/img/a/9/4/1/7/0/94170-large.jpg

The club is excited to announce the addition of Brazil international Maxwell on a one-year loan.

Maxwell Scherrer Cabelino Andrade, 32, joins from Paris Saint-Germain after two years in the French capital, signing on as Rui Pinheiro's first capture for the club. Maxwell made 47 league appearances for PSG, 63 in all competitions, scoring four goals from left back in the process. Prior to joining the reigning French champions, Maxwell turned out for several of football's leading lights, including Barcelona, Internazionale, and Ajax.

At his introductory press conference, Maxwell said: "I'm very happy to be returning to Brazil. Although I got my start at Cruzeiro, I've always admired Flamengo, and have always thought of it as a huge club. I know there's a lot of work to be done to get Mengão back to the top of the South American game, but I cannot wait to get started. Having talked with Rui Pinheiro, I'm just itching to pull on that Rubo-Negro shirt!"

Following Maxwell's introduction, Pinheiro noted: "Maxwell has seen it all in Europe, and for my money, he's one of the best left backs in the world. Honestly, I can hardly believe he was made available to us! He's a hard worker on both sides of the ball and very intelligent, but perhaps most importantly, he's a winner. I've long admired his game and rather look forward to working with him."
Good Brazilian signing, and good update once again! Keep this up man!

Squad and Tactical Overview

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m17/nonsenseandnonesuch/O%20Renascimento/2013FlamengoSquadampTactic_zpsfa68d37f.png

Never mind Pinheiro's preference for the football on display at Conte's Juventus. Flamengo lacks quality in wide midfield, so it seems Mengão will have to go a little narrow. There's definitely quality in central midfield, so, if Pinheiro's smart, he'll pack it in. Neither Digão nor Moura are afraid to get forward from right back, and Maxwell is known for doing so from the left, so that'll likely be where the width is found. Going forward, expect Marcelo Moreno to play a large part in goals scored. He'll be alone up top, responsible for making the net bulge himself and for playing the likes of Carlos Eduardo and André Santos in from midfield.

Key Players

Felipe

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m17/nonsenseandnonesuch/O%20Renascimento/FelipeScreenshot_zps6551fe5b.png

In a tactic such as this, the defence is going to be beaten. It's the price paid for a lack of competent wide players. Although we'll have a lot of ball control, in theory, with the full backs pushing up as much as they will, and with center backs who are not perhaps the paciest in the world, Felipe's reflexes and one-on-one ability will sometimes be the difference between zero points and one, or one and three.

Maxwell

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m17/nonsenseandnonesuch/O%20Renascimento/MaxwellScreenshot_zpsb90f5d10.png

Since Flamengo don't really have effective wingers, and attacking width has to come from somewhere, Maxwell will be tasked with...being the left flank. As a decent all-around full back, Maxwell's ability in both halves of the field (as well as his stamina) will be key.

André Santos

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m17/nonsenseandnonesuch/O%20Renascimento/SantosScreenshot_zpseab87fc8.png

Say what you will about André Santos's time at Arsenal, but for a Brasileirão side, he'll be a solid contributor. As we've got a bit of a small squad, his versatility will be of great importance. Able to play all three of my roles in attacking and central midfield with great effect, expect to see good things from the old Arsenal scapegoat.
You have a very solid squad mate!
