Denswil, Geis join Porter’s Saints Revolution

Southampton have announced the signings of Ajax centerback Stefano Denswil and Mainz midfielder Johannes Geis.

Denswil, 21, joins in a £6.75m move. The left footed defender made 16 appearances with Ajax last campaign and comes with a reputation as being comfortable in possession.

“I have been targeting a left footed defender all window, a defender that could really play with the ball at his feet. Stefano fits the bill and I’m excited to be in charge of his development moving forward,” said manager Caleb Porter of his newest addition.

Geis, 20, joins for a reported £8.5m. The midfielder is a two footed player who can operate as a box-to-box fashion or in a more attacking oriented playmaking role. He made 28 appearances for Mainz in 2013, tallying 6 assists.

“Johannes is a tremendous talent. Very flexible positionally, quick, strong on the ball. He checks all the boxes for what I’m looking for in a midfielder,” said Porter.

Denswil is a top buy in my opinion!

Hofmann, Kurzawa join Southampton on loan

Players reportedly conclude Saints' summer spending

Southampton have announced the completion of two season-long loan signings.

Winger Jonas Hofmann joins the club from German giants Borussia Dortmund, while French fullback Layvin Kurzawa joins from AS Monaco.

“Jonas and Layvin give us great depth and will have every opportunity to play and gain valuable experience while they are at the club,” said manager Caleb Porter of the two loanees.

When asked if this would conclude his extensive summer dealings, Porter was direct with media members.

“That’s it for us this window. I’m incredibly happy with the business we’ve managed to do,” said Porter.

“We’ve concluded our business early. Now the real work begins.”

There is no word if either player has a buyout clause as part of their loan agreement.

Nationality: German

Timo Horn joined Southampton this offseason in a 3.8m move from 2. Bundesliga side Koln. He is expected to take over from last year’s starter Arthur Boruc. Horn is known as a great distributor of the ball which should be valuable in Caleb Porters short passing style of play.

Artur Boruc will provide experience as a backup this coming season. He is often erratic, but is a solid insurance policy should injuries come into play this coming season.

Lovren is a strong, skillful center back who will line up on the right side of defense this season. Known for his aerial prowess and leadership, Lovren is a major part of the squad and will serve as Vice-Captain in 2014/15.

Denswil is a skillful left footed center back that oozes potential and class. He will likely start the year playing to the left of Dejan Lovren in the center of the Saints' defense.

Stefan de Vrij is a versatile defender who was signed in the summer of 2013. He can operate centrally or as a right back and should get plenty of play as he rotates into the defense during the season.

Shaw is arguably the biggest defensive prospect in England. He will be given full license to bomb down the left flank in Porter’s 4-3-3 system and should have a breakout campaign as a result.

Young Frenchman Layvin Kurzawa joins the club on loan from Monaco. He is an attack-minded fullback who will be expected to add a lot going forward when given an opportunity this season.

Clyne is a steady and quick fullback with terrific attacking qualities. He is rumored to be on the brink of his full international debut. A strong start to the season could solidify his place in the England setup.

A resounding win with goals from Lallana, Iancu, Fierro, Shaw and a brace from Rickie Lambert.

Southampton 2 - 0 FC Red Bull Salzburg

A hard fought victory with goals from Carlos Fierro and Stefano Denswil. Luke Shaw hobbled off injured in the 60th minute and will miss the remainder of pre-season.

Southampton 1 - 2 FC Bayern

A late Javi Martinez goal sealed the victory for Bayern in an exciting friendly at St Mary's.

FC Gueugnon 0 - 6 Southampton

Goals galore in this one with a hat trick from Iancu and further goals from Cabella, Hofmann, and Rotariu

FC Rouen 0 - 3 Southampton

Denswil, Rotariu, and Cabella find the net as the Saints ease by the French side.

De Graafschap 1 - 0 Southampton

Lucien Akacher scored in the 50th to hand an underwhelming Southampton side the shock defeat.

Southampton 1 - 1 Sporting Lisbon

Adam Lallana scored in the 85th to rescue a draw for Southampton in a hard fought friendly against Portuguese powers Sporting Lisbon.

Southampton opened their campaign with a hard-luck loss on the road at Arsenal. Despite enjoying plenty of possession and creating three clear cut chances, the Saints were unable to get anything past Wojciech Szczesny. Arsenal caught Southampton on the break for all 3 of their goals, and boss Caleb Porter will sure to be upset with his side’s defending of the counter. Luke Shaw missed out while still returning to fitness from his pre-season injury and Rickie Lambert was preferred to Gabriel Iancu up top.

Caleb Porter’s name was sang loudly as he walked off the pitch following an astonishing home debut. Porter’s side put Man City to the sword netting 5 goals past Joe Hart in a stunning victory at St Mary’s. Adam Lallana produced a world-beating performance scoring three beautiful individual goals including 63rd minute volley from the edge of the area. Luke Shaw returned from injury to also score for the Saints. The defensive frailties from the Arsenal game seemed to be fixed with Timo Horn picking up his first clean sheet for the club.

After an early scare in the form of an 11th minute wonder goal from James Coppinger, Southampton rallied to see off Sheffield United 3-1 in the Capital One Cup 2nd Round. James Ward-Prowse bossed the midfield chipping in two assists.

Despite enjoying 60% of the possesion and having several chances to score, Southampton were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton. Saints’ boss Caleb Porter will surely be upset with his side’s lack of killer instinct in the attacking third. However, their ability to control the ball against a strong Everton side while on the road will be reassuring for the young manager.

Lallana’s hat trick against Manchester City was magisterial and surely will be one of the individual performances of the season.


The Saints suffered a hard luck loss on opening day but rebounded in unbelievable fashion handing Manchester City a humiliating 5-0 beating thanks to a brilliant display by club captain Adam Lallana. A strong showing against Sheffield United illustrated the depth of talent at Caleb Porter’s disposal with teenagers Dorin Rotariu and James Ward-Prowse both showing their class. A draw at Goodison Park was a bit of a disappointment given the Saints’ dominance in possession and chances created, but taking a point off Everton is never a terrible result. Based on initial impressions, Porter has plenty to build off moving forward and looks to have an exciting young squad that is beginning to really click as a unit.
