Chapter 6 - Who Am I?

Joan Capdevila

Born : Tàrrega, Catalonia, Spain 3 February 1978 (age 37) Clubs Played for: 1996–1997 Tàrrega, 1997–1998 Espanyol B, 1998–1999 Espanyol, 1999–2000 Atlético Madrid, 2000–2007 Deportivo La Coruña, 2007–2011 Villarreal, 2011–2012 Benfica, 2012–2014 Espanyol, 2014 NorthEast United, Clubs Managed: Feyenoord 2014-

I was born in Tàrrega a cold February night, Tàrrega was a small town in Catalonia. I started in the local sides youth team in 1989. I was promoted to the A team in 1996 I spent one season there before I went to my favourite team Espanyol. All of my friends in Tàrrega supported Barcelona but I supported the other Barcelona team Espanyol. I was placed in their B team for one season before I went to their A team where I impressed enough to earn a transfer to Atletico Madrid.

________________________________________________________________________________

I signed with Galician side Deportivo de La Coruña in the summer of 2000, I won the La Liga in 2001 and would be a regular fixture in the team as left-back, first competing with Enrique Romero then as the being undisputed first-choice. For the 2007–08 campaign Capdevila moved to Villarreal on a three-year deal, and played in all the league games except two, for a side that finished runner-up, achieving direct qualification to the UEFA Champions League. Midway through 2010–11 I faced stiff competition from José Catalá, even being relegated to the bench in some games.

________________________________________________________________________________

On 21 July 2011, aged 33 I moved abroad for the first time, joining S.L. Benfica in Portugal on a two-year contract. On 20 August I made my official debut in a 3–1 league win against C.D. Feirense at Estádio da Luz. On 27 July 2012, I agreed on a return to my first professional club Espanyol. I was released alongside Simão Sabrosa on 22 May 2014, after only ten overall appearances in my second season.

________________________________________________________________________________

On 16 July 2014, I signed for NorthEast United FC, as their marquee player ahead of the inaugural Indian Super League season.

FEYENOORD MAKE GREAT DEADLINE DAY BUISNESS

Newly appointed coach Joan Capdevila of Dutch side Feyenoord has made some excellent deadline buisness. Capdevila has bought and sold his first players as a coach. This he did by signing Jesus Vallejo from Zaragoza for £1.1 million and selling a aging Joris Mathijsen for £300k to Turkish side Gencerbirgli. Jesus Vallejo who is a 17 year old center-back had a release clause of £1.1 million which was met by Joan Capdevila, experts say Capdevila´s origins from Spain helped signing the young prospect.

SMALL FACTS ABOUT VALLEJO

Born in Zaragoza, Aragon, Vallejo joined Real Zaragoza's youth setup in 2007, aged 10. On 26 July 2013, after impressing in the Juvenil squad, he signed a new deal with the club.

On 23 August 2014, before even having appeared for the B-side, Vallejo made his professional debut, starting in a 0–0 draw at Recreativo de Huelva for the Segunda División championship. On 26 December he further extended his link, until 2019.

Vallejo scored his first professional goal on 5 April, netting the last in a 1–1 away draw against CD Tenerife. In the same match he was appointed team captain by manager Ranko Popović, and remained with the role afterwards.
Good transfer.

DE KLASSIEKER WILL BE PLAYED INFRONT OF FANS AGAIN

De Klassieker will now be played infront of fans again, KNVB made this descision today infront of the match between Feyenoord and Ajax being played tomorrow. The first match since the ban will be played at De Kuip, which is Feyenoord´s home arena. Joan Capdevila will be looking to win this De Klassieker after an okay but not more month to put himself in the boards good books. De Klassieker is classified as one of the biggest rivarlies. The Telegraph named it the 6th biggest derby in the world only after Al Ahly v Zamalek, Fenerbahce v Galatasaray, Red Star Belgrade v FK Partizan, Rangers v Celtic, and Boca Juniors v River Plate.

________________________________________________________________________________

De Klassieker is a very violent derby, this is seen by the many clashes example The Battle of Bevervijk in 1997 where one Ajax supporter Carlo Picornie was beaten to death by opposition supporters after the supporter had mocked the opposition. The Battle of Bevervijk triggered KNVB to put more polices at the derbies. And the other the two derbies that season where played with no fans.

________________________________________________________________________________

In April 2005, riots took place around Feyenoord's ground involving hooligans from both sides and the riot police. Travelling Ajax fans had demolished the train transporting them to Rotterdam, and were forced to wait outside the stadium until the match was over. Meanwhile, Feyenoord supporters who had just seen their team lose, were determined to clash with rivals from Amsterdam, who had not seen the match. Hooligans filmed by police were shown on national TV. Virtually every hooligan on TV handed himself in. In February 2009, the mayors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam made an agreement with the KNVB to ban visiting fans from the away games for the next five seasons in an effort to curb the violence.
