My Football Manager Adventure SNAFU

After a relatively bad experience with Football Manager 2014 and completely falling out of love with the game, I didn't think I would be managing any more virtual football teams in the future. Incidentally, a friend offered to gift me Football Manager 2015 for Christmas, and I took him up on the offer since I didn't have to pay for it. What followed would be a Liverpool career that spanned ten years, an uncountable amount of trophies, and a story that would go on to place second on the FM15 Story of the Year competition.

I think it's safe to say that I've rediscovered my passion for the game and writing about managerial careers in general, so it wasn't a hard decision to go ahead with a new FM16 story after getting my hands on the game on the day of its release.

Thus, My Football Manager Adventure SNAFU will be my first, and hopefully my last, FM16 story. Please do enjoy the ride!

The Club

No surprises here! Liverpool is the club I support and it is always the team I go with in my first save of every Football Manager game. It is going to be the same this time around, although I doubt I will be able to replicate the success that I enjoyed in FM15.

After a brilliant 2013/14 season where Brendan Rodgers almost led Liverpool to their first title of the Premier League era, the Reds slumped to 6th last season on the back of some uninspiring football.

Most importantly, key players like Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling have left the club and there appears to be little chance of repeating that brilliant year where the firepower of Luis Suarez paved the way for an unexpected 2nd-placed finish.

Knowing this, the Football Manager gods have called on an unlikely man to salvage the situation and lift Liverpool's fortunes.

The Manager

Hachiman Hikigaya is the fictional main protagonist of Japanese animation flick Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, or, in the English tongue, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. The show revolves around the daily life of Hachiman, an anti-social and friendless high school student.

I'm a big fan of anime, and I first chanced upon the peculiar idea of the intriguing Hachiman being a football manager back in April while watching SNAFU. I decided to use this idea if I ever made an FM16 story, so here we are.

Moving on to more about the manager himself, Hachiman is apathetic, isolated, and extremely loner-prone. He also has a pessimistic attitude and likes to frequently play the blame game. At the same time, he is intelligent, and possesses good observation and perception skills.

In the setting of My Football Manager Adventure SNAFU, two years after completing his education, 22-year-old Hachiman is struggling to find work after being fired from his previous job. However, by twist of fate, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presents itself in England.

The word 'SNAFU' is military slang, which refers to a complete mess. Will this young man make a SNAFU of his own football manager adventure like the story title suggests, or will he become the Japanese Bill Shankly?

As Expected, My Life is a Mess

As expected, my life is a mess.

Why do I say as expected, you ask? Well, I mean, if you happen to possess this rotten personality of mine, as many others have so kindly pointed out to me, there is really no way for your life to be a bed of roses.

What does it take to have a life like that anyway? Being the boss of your own company? Earning billions every week? I don't care about any of that. I just want to be able to pay for my own daily expenses. Unfortunately, that itself is already a tough challenge for me.

I looked down, studying the contents of the piece of paper I held in my hand. What was this, the third letter of dismissal this month?

One would think loners with little to zero friends in high school are destined for greatness because they pack some kind of hidden special talent. That's how it always goes in TV shows anyway. It doesn't appear to be the case for me though. Failing to engage in pleasant conversations with peers throughout my schooling life wasn't exactly good preparation for the working world. I failed to get on with and apparently disrespected senior colleagues and bosses, which often resulted in unfavorable circumstances for me. Such as this one.

Tossing the letter into the trash, I sank down onto the sofa and booted up a video game. A fourth job hunt in twenty-six days could wait.

I'm probably going to be sacked in like three weeks anyway.

At that moment, my mobile phone started to beep, which made me jump a little. The sound of the ringtone felt almost foreign to my ears. I could count the number of friends I had on one hand, maybe three fingers. Not many, save for my little sister and parents, would make the effort to call a guy like myself.

Was it one of those stupid telemarketers? You know how it is. Your phone rings and you pick it up with enthusiasm, hoping it's some kind of pretty girl asking you out on a date... before your hopes crash and burn as you realize it's just a verbal advertisement from someone who only gives a shit about your money.

Nevertheless, the ringing was starting to become an annoyance. I paused my game and grabbed the mobile.

"Hello?"

Yui Yuigahama and Yukino Yukinoshita.

Two women with vastly different natures. Yuigahama was extremely cheerful, and disgustingly optimistic, while Yukinoshita had a cold, almost scary disposition. Somehow, they were the best of friends. I guess it's true what they say, opposites attract.

The weirdest part about them is that they are arguably two of the hottest chicks I've ever met, yet they are also two of very few females who are willing to converse with me. Be it in school or the workforce, girls usually shunned the outcast known as Hachiman Hikigaya, calling him creepy and whatnot. It's okay, I'm used to it.

I met Yuigahama and Yukinoshita in high school, as we all happened to be in our school's Service Club, which aimed to help out or counsel anyone who visited with a problem.

Now, just so you know, I didn't volunteer to be a saint or whatever. My teacher at the time thought I needed to develop some social skills, and roped me into the thing. As can be seen from my numerous employment termination letters, it hasn't helped much, but at least I managed to gain two people I can actually call friends from my time at the club.

I stepped into the cafe, and the alarmingly loud voice of Yuigahama quickly drew my attention.

"Hikki! Over here!"

I walked over to the table occupied by the duo, and sat myself down. "What's going on? Why did you call me out here?"

"Nothing! I just thought it would be nice to have another Service Club gathering! We haven't seen each other in so long after all!" Yuigahama replied with the widest grin on her face.

Yukinoshita gave a small nod. "She's right. How are you, Hikigaya?"

Annoyed. Irritated. Job hopping against my will. I have no job. I need a job. Or I'm going to run out of money. And die.

"Fine. Just looking for a job."

"What?" Yuigahama was visibly surprised. "What happened to your previous one?"

"Fired."

"Oh."

They didn't probe further, perhaps sensing that it was something I didn't really want to talk about, and the conversation gradually moved onto something else.

Yuigahama looked at her watch and gasped. The orange-haired bombshell downed her coffee in one gulp, and before I could mention how unladylike that was, she got up.

"Sorry, I gotta run! I'll see you guys again sometime!"

And just like that, she shot out the door. Sipping at my tea, I let out a remark. "Yuigahama looks really busy."

Yukinoshita did the same. "Indeed."

Nothing was said after that. Christ, the mood got awkward pretty quickly. Without her best friend around to initiate the conversations, Yukinoshita wasn't much of a talker. I had spent three years around her in high school, but the unnerving silence while alone with her still got to me.

Finally, after what seemed like ten years, she spoke.

"You're looking for a job?"

"Yeah. Why? You got one for me?"

Yukinoshita stared at me with a distasteful look. "Sorry, Hikigaya, but I don't offer jobs to people with revolting personalities."

Ah, yes, her signature insults. I was wondering where they had gone.

"Hey, it's fine, really. I wouldn't want to work under an asshole either," I muttered, choosing to ignore the fact that literally every boss I've worked for so far has been such a person.

I looked at Yukinoshita, expecting a retort. It never came. Instead, she scribbled down some numbers on a piece of tissue, and handed it over.

"That's my sister's number."

"Your sister?" I made a quick mental note to look normal, but I must still have had an offensive expression on my face because Yukinoshita was looking straight at me with a raised eyebrow.

Haruno Yukinoshita. I had met her several times in the past, and instantly decided from those experiences that I did not like her at all.

"Yes, my sister. She's stationed at our company's UK branch, although currently she's back here in Japan on holiday, so you should be able to contact her."

UK? United Kingdom? What? It was common knowledge that the Yukinoshita family was rich. Still, the fact that they had companies in countries aside from Japan was news to me.

"Contact her?"

"My sister has a lot of connections in England," said Yukinoshita in a nonchalant manner. "I hear that they pay well over there, and they aren't as strict on their employees as we Japanese are. If you are desperate enough, she might be able to find you a job there."

What was this out of the blue? A job in England, of all places? I pocketed the piece of tissue halfheartedly. Leaving the country for work didn't feel very appealing to me at all. All I wanted was a stable job with a stable income close to my comfortable home.

Close to home... was that really possible? The amount of different employments I had found myself in this month alone told me otherwise.

Maybe, just maybe, I could take a look at this newfound lifeline.
Oh God! Another Glenn Tham story? I know who is taking away all the SotM awards!

Thus, Hachiman Hikigaya Arrives in Liverpool

So exactly how did I end up on a plane en route to England again?

I wasn't too sure. In fact, it felt like I was on this private jet owned by the powerful Haruno Yukinoshita against my will.

At first, I had chose to ignore it for awhile, but eventually decided to give in and ring up the number I had brought back with me from the day before.

Upon hearing of my predicament, the elder sister of Yukinoshita was eager, perhaps too eager, to "help out an old friend".

One, I don't recall me and Haruno Yukinoshita being 'friends'. Two, I dislike how overly friendly she tends to be. It kind of makes me sick.

I also couldn't help but feel a little suspicious. Over the phone, Haruno Yukinoshita had seemingly hesitated for awhile, before gushing, "Oh, I have the perfect job for you!"

If it was anyone else, I wouldn't have cared too much about that slight moment of hesitance, followed by something that felt too good to be true.

But this was Haruno Yukinoshita. Schemer. Manipulator. Evil. I could see right through her 'ordinary nice girl' facade. Most of the time, the things she did were purely for her own amusement.

Anyway, Yukinoshita Senior stopped by a few days after the call, ordering me to pack my bags and then proceeding to whisk me away on this little plane.

I didn't even have the time to think about what could potentially be a life-changing decision, nor did I have the time to inform my family of these events. Nevertheless, I couldn't find the courage to say no to Haruno when she appeared right at my door. Many will say I'm making this up, but she projects this air of malevolence around her that scares me enough into complying with her every request. Just another thing I dislike about her.

Moving on to the job itself, what kind of work was it? I sincerely hope it isn't something retarded, like cleaning the sewers. Nah, I doubt it. When Haruno said 'the perfect job', she couldn't possibly have meant something so demeaning. Right? Right...?

I turned to the woman beside me. Haruno was furiously typing away on a laptop, but noticed my gaze and made the effort to wink back at me. Did I mention she was very flirtatious? I dislike that about her too. I don't like sluts.

Since making the call and speaking to her for the first time in four years, she had been exceptionally mysterious regarding the job offer. I figured now was the perfect time to ask her about it.

"Hey, what kind of job is it?"

"What?"

"What kind of work do you have for me?"

"Oh, that."

Lady, what else could I be asking about?

"Yeah, that."

"Hm..." Haruno stopped typing and closed her laptop. "Tell me, Hachiman, do you know anything about football?"

"No, I'm absolutely clueless! Do you play it with your hands?" I was unable to resist making a sarcastic mock enquiry.

What ensued was Haruno's sickening laughter. "Hahahaha! That's very funny, Hachiman!" I scrunched up my face in disgust at how fake the girlish chuckling sounded. "But what I'm talking about is professional football. Football clubs. Professional players."

I contemplated the reason behind her questions, although I went along with it anyway. "Uh... yeah. David Beckham?"

"What, is that all you know?"

I frowned at her. This wasn't important at all, was it? In the first place, I had zero interest in the sport. In high school and middle school, the guys who could play football were always the most popular ones among the girls. Needless to say, football, as well as the people who play it, was the complete opposite of Hachiman Hikigaya.

"Yeah."

"Well, don't worry, you will be learning a lot more about that soon." What? I threw Haruno a look, demanding an explanation. "Relax! All will be revealed soon."

Leaning back into my seat, I sighed, wondering what I had gotten myself into, for the alarm bells at the back of my head were starting to trigger.

After an eternity, we finally arrived at our destination. I instinctively asked if we were in London, since that was the only place in England I had heard of before. Haruno instantly corrected me - apparently we had arrived in Liverpool. What a weird name.

I followed Haruno to some luxury hotel, where I swiftly told her that I didn't have any money. Her reassurance was that she would be paying my living expenses for the time being.

Finally, something I like about Haruno Yukinoshita. She isn't afraid to splurge, especially on others.

Local time claimed that it was just slightly before 6 o'clock in the evening, but I was already feeling extremely restless from the jet lag. Regrettably, I wasn't given any time to judge the softness of my new hotel bed. Haruno's orders: meet me at the hotel lobby in five minutes. What a dictator.

Leaving my luggage in the room, I hurried down to the lobby, where I spotted a familiar face beside my companion for the day.

Immediately, I felt like leaving and was about to turn around to do just that. Sadly, I was spotted before I could make my evacuation.

Haruno waved me over and gestured to the annoyingly handsome man at her side. "Hachiman, I'm sure you remember Hayato."

Hayato Hayama? Former ace of my high school's football team? That immensely popular fellow whom every girl would kill to date? In other words, the dude who made me feel completely inferior in every aspect? Of course I remember.

"No, I don't."

"Hahaha, you're such a joker, Hachiman!" There it was. That stupid, stomach-turning laugh from Haruno. "Still, in case your memory actually is that bad, let me reintroduce you. This is Hayato Hayama, your classmate in high school, a friend of the Yukinoshita family, and currently a youth team coach at this city's football club."

Hayama extended his hand, his lips forming a revolting smile. "Hey, Hikigaya. It's been awhile."

I looked at his dirty hand. Crap, I don't want to shake that shit. I made myself do it anyway, all for the sake of politeness. "Too long," I lied. Too short, actually.

As my brain processed all the information Haruno had given me about Hayama so far, I noticed something was off.

"Coach?"

"Yes, I coach. Why?"

"Nothing, just thought from our time in high school that you would be some star football player instead."

Hayama chuckled awkwardly, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "Yeah, I guess there's a story behind that."

No, no, no. Let's end the conversation right here. I don't care about your story. It's going to be some long-winded sob story for sure. Thankfully, he didn't attempt to elaborate.

As Hayama and Haruno led me through the city streets to an expensive-looking diner, I began to think. Was there a link between my new workplace and football? It seemed a bit too convenient, to touch down at the city where my former footballer classmate plied his coaching trade.

This was quickly confirmed later over dinner, specifically, just as I took the first bite into my first meal outside of Japan.

"The name of the club Hayama works at is called Liverpool Football Club."

I gave a small grunt to show that I acknowledged, as I continued sampling the taste of English cuisine. Why was Haruno telling me this? It was as if I wanted to know.

"You're going to be the manager there."

"Cool," I replied, before slowly understanding what had been said. "Wait a minute. Manager?"

I didn't have a clue what that meant. No, of course I know what the word manager means. What I'm talking about is being the manager of a football club.

Sensing my obliviousness, Hayama, ever the hero, came to the rescue. "The manager of a team is like the boss of it. He instructs the players in the team, tells them how to play and picks who to play."

Wow, that sounded very cool. Yes, it was very nice and all... there was just one problem.

"I don't know anything about football."

Haruno shrugged that off, as quickly as I had mentioned it. "You're a smart man, Hachiman. I'm very certain you have what it takes to be an amazing manager."

I stared at her. This was the job she was talking about?

Realistically, there's honestly no way I can pull off something like this. Is there? No, there isn't. Take me back to Japan and my normal everyday life, please.

"It's a big job, so there's a chance of you earning upwards of fifty thousand pounds a week. That translates to about nine million yen if I'm not mistaken..."

All my worries ceased. "I'll take it."

Okay, I should probably have hesitated a little bit more.

But holy shit, nine million yen, and possibly more. Not only that, it's nine million yen a week. Just to run the rule over a stupid bunch of sportsmen. I would be a fool not to take this.

"I scheduled an interview for you tomorrow morning," Haruno revealed. "Hayama will drive you there from the hotel."

Scheduled an interview? Nice. For the first time in his life, Hachiman felt like thanking Haruno. He would have, if it didn't all feel a little too unbelievable.

"What's in it for you?" I questioned.

"What do you mean?" Haruno said sweetly. "I'm just trying to help out an old friend of mine."

Spare me the bullshit. And once again, look, I don't recall ever becoming friends with you.

"Is that it? Alright."

I conceded for now, there's no way I would get anything out of Haruno anyway. It was still a fact that she had helped me to grab hold of this wonderful opportunity, regardless of her hidden intentions. Maybe she just wanted me to owe her a favor.

Hachiman rose from the table, his plate completely polished of food. "Early day tomorrow, so I'm going to head back." His eyes shifted from the table to Haruno uncomfortably. "I'll pay you back for this dinner someday."

She responded dismissively. "It's fine. Run along now."

And that's what he did, speedily excusing himself from the restaurant.

With his former classmate gone, Hayato Hayama could at last pose his own set of questions to his older associate.

"I think you owe me some answers, Haruno. Why in the world are you helping a complete unknown, someone who knows next to nothing about football at that, to land a job as manager of one of the biggest football clubs in England?"

Haruno's broad grin was reminiscent of the Cheshire cat.

"I support Manchester United."

Hayato's palm met his face.

Somehow, he didn't think things were going to go smoothly for the individual known as Hachiman Hikigaya.

The End of Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool Football Club have confirmed the sacking of manager Brendan Rodgers, following the club's poor finish in the Premier League.

The 42-year-old had guided the Reds to a 2nd place finish in the 2013/14 season, but was unable to replicate his success for a second year running with Liverpool dropping to 6th place.

Last season did have its highs, with Rodgers masterminding a thirteen-game unbeatable run between late December and March. Unfortunately, there were many more lows - Liverpool were knocked out in the group stages of the Champions League, while also failing to deliver in local competitions like the FA Cup.

The club also fared poorly in the transfer market. Goal talisman Luis Suarez left for Barcelona in a deal that saw Liverpool gain a staggering £75 million. To combat the loss of the magnificent Uruguayan, players like Lazar Markovic and Mario Balotelli were recruited for big fees. However, they ultimately failed to produce.

Balotelli, judged by many as one of the Premier League season's worst signings, had been on fire for former club Milan, yet the controversial Italian managed just 1 goal in 16 league outings for Liverpool.

Long term injuries to star striker Daniel Sturridge and reliable full-back Jon Flanagan only made matters worst, and the pair shared just 3 league games among them for the entirety of the season.

Regardless, the team's general performances have been sub-par, culminating in the decision of owners John Henry and Thomas Werner to relieve Rodgers of his duties.

Most of Rodgers' signings flopped at Liverpool, including Milan maverick Mario Balotelli

Several football personalities have already taken to airing their views on the sacking publicly, with the most vocal of them all being former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

"Honestly not very surprised at the news about Brendan. It is true that Liverpool have been poor, the 6-1 defeat to Stoke was appalling," the retired footballer tweeted today.

"Still would have liked Brendan to be given a chance. Many forget that his football helped Liverpool to 2nd place in just the season before," he continued in a series of tweets.

"Now that Brendan is gone, it's important to find a replacement as quickly as possible. I think Jurgen Klopp would be great for us."

As mentioned by Carragher, many Liverpool fans would see Klopp as the perfect candidate to occupy the now empty Anfield hot seat.

The charismatic German just recently departed Borussia Dortmund after eight years at the helm, where he steered Die Borussen to two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal, as well as their second Champions League Final appearance in history.

It would be no easy task to persuade Klopp though. The Mainz legend opted to leave his role at Dortmund for a break away from football, and it could prove difficult for Liverpool officials to convince him otherwise.

Aside from Klopp, another potential target for Henry and Werner would be Carlo Ancelotti, who is looking for his next job after being given the sack by Real Madrid.

The Italian boss boasts a respectable CV, having managed the likes of Milan, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain. He has also won the Champions League on five occasions with two different clubs, the same amount that Liverpool can boast of in their 123-year history.

As a Liverpool fan, one can only salivate at the prospect of Ancelotti or Klopp taking charge. With the new season's transfer window fast approaching, the club's American owners will have an important decision on their hands to make.

Who will be the man to revive Liverpool's fortunes?

The Options Diminish

Former Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, believed to be Liverpool's number one choice to succeed Brendan Rodgers, has distanced himself from the role.

The German revealed today to local journalists that he had little interest in the vacancy at Anfield and will be taking a sabbatical as planned.

"I would like to manage in the Premier League sometime in the future," Klopp was reported to say. "But that's the future and not the present. For now I want to take a break and a long rest.

"It is true, there has been contact from Liverpool. Sadly, the timing is just not right as I would have seized the opportunity to manage one of the biggest clubs in Europe."

Klopp joins Carlo Ancelotti in publicly rejecting Liverpool's advances, with the former Real Madrid boss also declaring that he was not interested in taking over the Merseyside club.

The 56-year-old has won a multitude of honors with the likes of Milan and Chelsea, resulting in Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group identifying him as another suitable replacement for Rodgers. But with Ancelotti believed to be holding out for a job at a bigger club, they will now have to look elsewhere.

As the list of candidates continue to thin, bizarre names have been linked to the position. Sam Allardyce, released from his contract at West Ham United after leading them to 12th place in the Premier League, could be a potential short-term option.

However, following their season of disappointment, the Liverpool fans will surely not be appeased if Rodgers' successor does not prove to be a big name with a considerable reputation.
I have not seen you update like this. The dialogues and all..... anyway good updates :D
