BREAKING: Manchester United Sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Both Manchester United and Real Madrid have confirmed that 3-time Ballon D'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo is making a switch from Santiago Bernabeu to Old Trafford after 7 seasons at the historic Spanish club. Ronaldo's private jet landed at Manchester Airport earlier this morning as he completed his medical. It is thought the transfer fee had been agreed as early as last week but it took a significant amount of time to agree to a contract.

The fee in question is thought to be around £70 million, which is £10 million left than his fee when he left for Real in 2009. At 31 years of age, Ronaldo is thought to be on a 4 year contract with the view of ending his best years at the club. It is also thought the fan favourite at Old Trafford agreed to downsize his Real contract to fit within the confines of United's finances although he is undoubtedly the highest paid player at the club.

Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon D'Or in his last full year at the club

It is thought the legendary winger chose to move back to Manchester United to rekindle his form after losing his killer instinct at the Bernabeu. The 31 year old has scored just 52 goals in his last few seasons, at a rate of around 0.5 per game, which is well down on his past goal-a-game averages. He appears to be slipping in comparison to his eternal rival Lionel Messi, and at his age, needed a change in scenery to give himself a chance of writing himself into the history books as better than Messi.

Ronaldo will link up with ex-teammate Ryan Giggs, and it will be interesting to see how the 42 year old Welshman deals with a player of his quality, reputation and self-esteem. Another point of discussion is where he will fit into the United tactical system, which is a flat 4-4-2. Whether he will replace Memphis Depay in left midfield, or slot in as a striker in the place of Rooney, van Persie or Zivkovic, will soon come to light in the coming days, with United scheduled to face Chelsea in the Community Shield on Saturday.

Former teammates, now one is in charge

As champions of Europe and England, the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Manchester United squad should solidify their position as one of the top football sides in the world. Further transfer activity is not expected, with the £70 million outlay representing a large amount of Giggs' rumoured transfer budget, and realistically, they don't need anyone else. Realistically, they didn't even need Ronaldo - but why would you pass up on the chance to bring back a legend?
