Managing Leeds: Brave or Stupid?

I know I've said in the past that I won't make any more stories and that I'll just stick to one, but I guess promises are made to be broken. As a Leeds fan, I learned that the hard way. I've often enjoyed reading the long descriptive stories. Stories where the writer actually puts a narrative to what's going on in the game. It's a style that I've always enjoyed, admired and- as anyone who has read my stories will know- tried to emulate.

I've found that I much prefer reading this style to writing it myself, as writing prolongs a save I just want to get into and get on with, and that's taken the fun out of the game. I've figured it's probably why I've started so many different stories with little success.

So this is a new story of mine. Brand new save, fully equipped with the update and with a brand new style of writing. As the title suggests, I will be managing Leeds, a job many consider a poisoned chalice with the mad hat owner that runs the place.

Enjoy.

LEEDS APPOINT TOWNEND

1st July 2015

Leeds United have confirmed the appointment of Josh Townend as the club's new head coach. Townend signed an initial one-year deal at Thorp Arch this morning.

Townend emerged as a front runner for the job last night, when he was reportedly seen leaving Elland Road, allegedly following an interview. The appointment puts an end to ongoing speculation regarding the hot seat at Elland Road, with no reports of an extension being offered to Neil Redfearn on his contract but dozens of names being linked with a move to West Yorkshire.

Of the appointment, Leeds United President Massimo Cellino said "We explored many options, but in the end decided that this was the best move for the club. Neil [Redfearn] was given an interview as we explained to him we were weighing up keeping him against hiring someone else. Ultimately, we were most impressed by Josh [Townend] and his vision for the club, which is why he is now the Head Coach"

The title of Head Coach seems as though Cellino wishes to remain in charge of player recruitment and leave Townend to deal with on-the-pitch performance. When asked what he thought of the policy, Townend said "It's been controversial over the past year or so as the club hasn't operated like this before. I can see the advantages and it definitely gives me one less job to do. I don't have the power completely taken from me in the transfer market, at the end of the day it's my team so I can tell those in charge of recruitment what sort of player I need"

This will be the Leeds-born coach's first lead role, although he has an established career already as a coach and as a former player. Townend started his career at Everton in 1992 and played a key role in the first team until 1996, when he moved to Sunderland. It was with the Black Cats that Townend won his first cap for England and went on to play 56 times for his country, scoring 13 goals. Unfortunately his career was cut short by an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2004.

He has been coaching ever since and has coached Farsley Celtic, Bradford Park Avenue, Halifax Town, Huddersfield Town, Newcastle United, Everton, Tottenham and LA Galaxy.

Although few agree with the way the board cast Redfearn off at the end of last season, the Leeds United Supporters' Trust (LUST) have voiced their approval with Townend, claiming that the appointment is a "step in the right direction"

Townend will take charge of his first friendly in ten days time away at First Vienna FC and will start his league campaign with a home game against Burnley on 8th August.
Good luck mate, would love to see you take Leeds back into the PL!

A good preseason, certainly a lot better than I expected for Leeds - it was actually quite organised for once!

9 points from 5 games is a solid start to the season for a team being made 40/1 to win promotion. I would have taken the results we've had at the start of the season, even though Derby can be seen as two points dropped. We've got the international break to re-group and go again, hopefully as strong as we have been this month.
Good start to the season mate, would be very happy with it!

Cheers mate. Would have preferred to have beaten Derby but I'd have taken the draw before the game

I was told by the board at the start of the season to finish mid-table, and our current position just outside the play-offs seems to be doing my position no harm whatsoever. We have a few winnable games coming up next month so my hope is that we'll be in the top six by October. All in all, a very good solid start to the season, which gives us something to build on.
Doing well so far and it is very tight at the top just have to turn a couple of draws into wins and it could be a very good season

Cheers mate! The draws have been in games where I would have taken a draw anyway, as long as we win the games we should be winning and pick up as many points as possible against stronger sides, we should be okay
Again a solid month, you're sitting pretty comfortable at the minute but you've got more than enough ground to build on and push on up the table!
