Scott: Glad to be of service ;) You should apply at Sky for a position!

Infra: Thank you :D It was the happiest I've ever felt about a FM game in years! When that final minute goal went in I was way too happy, but yes, delighted with promotion into the FL

MJK: Cheers dude! :D

Justice: No words.. Just well done ;) Thanks mate

It was a great night for Eastleigh’s Jake Pickard as the young striker was among the awards handed out by non-league officials in last night’s Vanarama National League awards ceremony.

With the congratulations handed out to all competitors in the three divisions sponsored by Vanarama, it was the National League that Liam Knowles was most concerned with.

The presenter, former Leeds United left-back Ian Harte handed out the ‘Goal of the Season’ award, with the widescreen displaying Tranmere’s Jack Dunn scoring a fantastic solo goal in which he dribbled from his own half to put one past the Aldershot goalkeeper from 22 metres out.

The next award which was handed out was the ‘Manager of the Year’ awards. Tony Burman of Dartford won the Vanarama South award for his title-winning role at The Darts, meanwhile Matt Jansen won it in the Vanarama North for reaching the Play-Offs with Chorley FC.

Despite being a favourite for the award, Eastleigh boss could only finish runner-up to the winner Danny Cowley who won the title with Lincoln – ironically only because of Liam Knowles’ involvement of defeating league leaders Wrexham on the final day to hand Lincoln City the title, which is sure to leave a bit of bitterness in the mouth of the 26-year-old in his first season of football management.

The next award was the big one – ‘Player of the Season’ – as voted for by managers across the subject divisions. Kidderminster’s Ryan Croasdale won the award in Vanarama North for his hand in the 21 assists from his natural defensive midfield position, helping his side get out of the sixth tier in the Play-Off Final. In Vanarama South, it was Eastbourne Boro’s right-back Craig Stone who won the award for his central midfield role, scoring three goals and assisting eleven as he picked up four of the votes.

In the Vanarama National League it was a no-contest as Eastleigh’s star man Jake Pickard as he picked up ten of the votes, making it virtually impossible for any other player to win it. With 24 goals and 18 assists, the crucial moment came right at the death in the Play-Off Final, as he sealed Eastleigh’s promotion into League Two with a 92nd minute finish against Sutton United.

That wasn’t all for the 20-year-old striker, as Pickard also picked up the Golden Boot – the award given to the division’s top goalscorer – with 24 goals, his goal in the Play-Off Final setting him one goal ahead of 2nd placed Kaiyne Woolery and Cole Stockton.

Jake Pickard, Player of the Season/Top Goalscorer 2016/17:
It’s an absolute pleasure to have picked up so many plaudits this season and I can only thank the team on and off the pitch at Silverlake Stadium. The gaffer has got some great charisma and that has been proven as we will be playing League football next season. I can’t wait to see what happens with the team over the summer and I hope we can keep some of the lads we’ve had on loan this season for next time around. They’ve been a joy to work with.

Eastleigh has had six players on loan this season consisting of Jerry Yates, Ben Close, Hakeem Odoffin, Sam Matthews, Tyler Garrett and Luca DeLa Torre (sent back to Fulham due to injury). There has been no reported movement towards extensions or permanent deals, despite the quality they brought to this season.

Jake Pickard has also reportedly been offered a one-year contract extension on his current deal ending in 2018. The offer is allegedly on the table and currently in the hands of Pickard and his agent to come to a conclusion of the contract details.
Liam should have won.
You would have won Manager of the Year if not for those druggies
Justice: 100% agree :P

MJK: Well, may not be the last time they drag him down ;)

As the previous successful season passes us by, it is time to show you the new arrangements for the coming season - Eastleigh's first ever in the Football League.

Earlier in preseason we signed a new £480,000 sponsorship deal which lasts only for this year as well as other smaller deals with local businesses.

Our new kits (below) are also sponsored by British Steel this season as the sponsorship with Utilita expired in the summer. British Steel will be displayed on the front of the new home and away jerseys as well as the goalkeeper's shirts in our debut season in the Football League.

The stadium sponsorship with Silverlake also lasts until 2019 so will expire in the season after this season, meaning potentially more money due to our rise in stature.

But now is the time you've all been waiting for: transfers.

This summer has been an incredibly busy time, especially compared to last season as we prepare ourselves for life in League Two this campaign. No more than fifteen players have come in for this season, with two extending their stay on loan from the previous season.

The first deal we agreed was the extension of Hakeem Odoffin's loan spell for another year. The right-back was very impressive last season as he was nominated alongside Jake Pickard for the league's Player of the Season. At such a young age, his physicality will go a long way in this division as it did last time around.

Following Odoffin's extension, our first permanent transfer of the window was also for a right-back to challenge Odoffin in the position, as Lewis Horner made his way down to the coast on a free transfer. At 25 years old, Horner has valuable experience in the top division of Scotland with Hibernian and St. Johnstone.

Thirdly, a deal that I was incredibly proud of pushing through due to other bigger teams reaching for his signing as Joe Davis joins us on a two-year contract. With plenty of experience of the lower Football League with Port Vale and more recently Fleetwood, the 23 year old has bags of potential to carry us a long way from the centre-back position.

My intention at the start of the transfer window was clearly to enhance the defence that we had, with players going back to their parent clubs or players who were simply not good enough for the step up we needed to strengthen the back four. With plenty of Football League experience arrives Adam Chicksen with plenty of teams on his CV at the prime age of 25. He is sure to be a starter at the club this season.

This summer I think I grabbed one of the best bargains of the summer in Younes Bnou Marzouk. The striker, formerly of Juventus is extremely highly rated in this division. The 21-year-old Moroccan has unbelievable pace with a good end product and I am very confident that Bnou Marzouk can win games on his own this season.

We have been quite poor with the goalkeeper that we have had since I joined, with only Graham Stack (who has left) and Ryan Clarke filling the goalposts since I joined. With the arrival of Spaniard David Armengol I hope that this tradition is wiped away with some great shot-stopping. The 31-year-old kept 13 clean sheets last season as his team - Marino - were promoted out of the Spanish Third Division.

Having spent the past eight years of his life playing in League Two for both Accrington and Carlisle, I expect Luke Joyce to be a good addition for us. With 292 League Two appearances since 2009 he knows what it takes to be a good midfielder in this league and I intend to use him when we are drawing a match late on in the game, in hope of a winner.

Back to loan deals, we welcome back one of last season's stars as Jerry Yates returns to Silverlake Stadium for another season on loan. Last season was a very successful experience for Yates as he bagged 15 goals and assisted 12 in just 22 league appearances for Eastleigh. With a familiar face back at the club, I trust Yates to be a match-decider when we need him. At 20 years of age, this is a make or break season as to whether he is up to standard of keeping him at the club permanently with his contract at Rotherham expiring next summer.

Our third and final loan deal of the season so far is the arrival of attacking-midfielder Harry McKirdy who joins Eastleigh on loan from Aston Villa for the season. Wearing number ten this season, I expect McKirdy to be battling for a starting spot with Tom Rosenthal as we try and push Josh Doughty out of the club due to his lack of ability at this level of the game. McKirdy made his Aston Villa debut last season in a Championship game versus Ipswich Town.

A signing that I am very confident in here, as Nat Wedderburn joins us following his contract expiration at Dunfermline. Wedderburn has League Two experience with Notts County, Hereford and Northampton which we look to exploit. Playing defensive midfield and standing at 6'4", Wedderburn's tough physique is an outlet we look to utilise in this division as a player who breaks up opposition play, before carrying it forward into our own attack.

Just one of the few foreign signings that I have made this season, Pablo Vivancos joins us despite having no previous English football experience. I hope that Vivancos can adapt quickly to challenge Wedderburn in that defensive midfield role, as the Argentinian's physical capabilities are something that is useful in such a position.

The most recent foreign signing is the arrival of Maxime Lemoine as the French winger joins us on a two-year contract. He played football for the first time in three years last season at French side Maubeuge, where he impressed with 18 goals and six assists in 34 matches. A proven goalscorer from the wing is something that we are very lucky to have, it is just a matter of consistency and adaptability to an English lower league he has never played in before.

Since we struggled with a lack of out-and-out wingers last season we had no alternative formation to revert to if it was necessary. With the arrivals of Lemoine and Tope Obadeyi I hope that we can switch up formations whenever I want as they join the existing wingers, Devarn Green, Calaum Jahradlo-Martin and Mekhi Leacock-McLeod in the ranks. Obadeyi has plenty of experience of this division with loan spells at Rochdale, Shrewsbury, Bury and Plymouth throughout his career which stretches from Bolton all the way to Rio Ave in Portugal.

As we lost a lot of left-back cover in the transfer window, with Tyler Garrett returning to Doncaster and Sam Muggleton and Chinua Cole having their contracts terminated, we brought in Adam Chicksen first, but added experience at left-back with Joe Martin. 28-year-old Martin played in League Two with Gillingham and was a regular starter for The Gills before joining Millwall in 2015.

With so many wages rising over the £700 per week mark, it was to my surprise that former Cambridge United midfielder Conor Newton only went for a £250 per week wage - unheard of in this squad unless you were under 20 years old. Newton will have to battle the new arrivals like Vivancos and Wedderburn as well as last seasons players such as Sam Togwell to get his place in the team. With his well-rounded attributes, Newton is a welcome addition into the middle of the park for us this season.

With many youth team players released, there were also twelve first-team players that left the club over the summer.

Darius Henderson and Ben Strevens both retired from football, with Strevens taking up the Under 23 Manager role at Eastleigh immediately after his retirement at 37 years old.

Out on loan all of last season, David Pipe and Connor Essam were refused new contracts with us as they were found surplus to requirements and on too high wages to keep on the books as back-up players this time around.

Last season's utility players like James Constable, Jason Taylor, Gavin Hoyte,
Graham Stack, Chinua Cole, Sam Muggleton and Ross Stearn
were all released from the club as well, with only Stearn finding a new club since his release.

But perhaps the biggest departure of the window so far was Dean Hammond, who was released as knee tendonitis ruled the former Southampton midfielder out for 10 months - long enough to force him into an early retirement. Hammond was reportedly on £3,500 per week at Eastleigh, and Liam Knowles did not want to be paying that for Hammond to sit on the sidelines. However, Knowles did offer Hammond the club's medical treatment despite his release. Knowles said in an interview after the departure that he would 'consider' bringing Hammond into the coaching staff after his injury.

Some absolutely top drawer signings for Eastleigh! Joe Davis looks like the pick of the bunch, and I'd imagine he'll be a key component for several seasons!
Amazing signings and you've bought Joycey so 10/10 on that one ;) Shame to see Hammond being forced into retirement but it would be nice to see him brought in for the coaching staff. Good job on nailing down Pickard, you'd be a fool to let him get away!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how big Chicksen's head is?

Justice: It'll take a few weeks for them to get to know each other I'm sure! Davis is a great signing, well worth the money we're paying for him, although Bnou Marzouk is another great capture in my eyes. And I'm laughing so much at Chicksen :)) Will certainly win us a few headers with them extra inches!

Scott: Knew you'd be happy with an ex-Accy lad ;) About Hammond, I'll have to wait for him to retire first before approaching him. Was delighted to seal Pickard as well, especially for such a minimal pay rise, too!

As the successes of last season leave us behind and the experiences become great memories, we step into the new season in style with the 2017/18 preseason results. With 15 signings made in the summer, the squad have done incredibly well as a unit as they rack up five straight wins out of five throughout preseason, which included a win against Scunthorpe (League One) in a thrilling 4-3 victory.

This is a look at the League Two table as we go into our first ever season in the Football League. Prior to the fifteen new signings we brought in, we were predicted to be involved in a relegation dogfight but thanks to the scouting team and the generous funds made available to myself, the pundits push our chances up to a mid-table finish by the end of the season.

Exactly the performance I expected from one of my more talented signings from the summer. Due to rotation it saw Younés Bnou Marzouk play three matches in preseason, but he returned with three goals and two assists along with a very good positive rating going into the competitive season.

Look who you play first ooo. Very good pre-season as well!
Smash smash smash smash smash! Plenty of goals in pre-season, and against some high-quality opposition too! Looks like your team is ready to rumble, although I do feel your side drew the short straw with a trip to The Den in the League Cup. Nonetheless, I have faith in your ability to smash the teams in your path (especially Accrington Stanley)!
Scott: Don't you worry, I'm putting my very best team out against your lads ;)

Justice: It was a very good preseason indeed, proud of my signings and all that. Fully prepared for the league campaign now, and about Millwall - I feel worse for our fans going to The Den! Desperately hope to see off Accrington Stanley in the best way possible :P
4th August 2017

It was one of those beautiful Friday nights on the south coast of England. I had London to the East, Southampton down South, Cornwall in the West and the entire country in the North – maybe avoiding Birmingham where it allowed me to. With only a few days to go before the big new campaign begins I wanted one more trip out by myself.

I had just signed a new contract at the end of the last season so that I was earning in the region £1,000 per week or thereabouts so money wasn’t really an object anymore for me. I had put a £20,000 deposit on a house which I would be moving into in about October so I no longer had to rent. I hated renting. ‘No parties’, the owner said which was a bit shit.

Being a Friday night, there was no training tomorrow so I could get as drunk as I wanted. I looked up a few areas on Google Maps as I decided to head over to Winchester which was only 17 minutes up the road from Eastleigh. I looked at all the bars and pubs before finding my destination – The Golden Tiger pub.

I walked in, seeing that it was quite full and busy in there being a Friday night in the middle of the town. “Pint of Foster’s please, boss.” I said to the landlord, handing over three pound and fifteen pence as he opened up the till.

I took the time in between the landlord pulling the pint to look around and find a seat. There were no seats left around a table which wasn’t already occupied so it looked like I was having to lean against the bar for now as it didn’t look like anybody was leaving soon.

I was halfway down my pint, looking through the news on the phone before the occasional glances up at the television. There was a man in the corner in a polo shirt and regular fitting blue jeans – the sort of bloke you would see on the ‘yer da’ memes online – he had kept looking towards me for a few seconds for the past fifteen minutes, I paid no attention to him back, assuming that he was an Eastleigh fan or something and if he wanted to talk I would let him come to me rather than vice versa and make it seem like I have a problem with him.

Sure enough, the man finished his drink and got up to the bar to order another pint of whatever ale that he was drinking tonight. He waited ten seconds to start a conversation with me. “You’re that Liam Knowles, ain’t ya?” he started in his cockney accent, South London for sure. “Eastleigh ain’t it?”

“Aha, yeah mate.” I responded, I never really knew how to reply to fans when they enquired about my identity.

He held his hand out for me, “Lovely to meet you mate. I’m not an Eastleigh fan myself, Aldershot Town for me. Some team you put out against us last season!” he smiled at me.

“Aye I know, tough side were your boys last season I must say! You were so unlucky to miss out on a Play-Off place, almost felt bad for you until we won in the Final” I said, almost cockily. I did send a humorous wink to calm the joke down.

“Yeah. Tough luck, but it’s who deserves it most in the end!” He said, he steadied himself a little before continuing. It was as though he was preparing to say something big. “Listen, Liam. I know I’ve known you for about two minutes, mate, but there’s something I’d like to discuss with you.”

I shifted my body to face him fully. “Okay? Go on.” I replied, with my full attention facing his way.

The man pulled out his wallet to find identification of some sort. “I’m Paul Evison and I’m an F.A. licensed agent. I spend a lot of time at work trying to find new clients who don’t currently have agents and for which circumstances and I couldn’t help notice that you don’t have an agent do you?”

“No, I don’t.” I confirmed to Paul, double-taking his identification. “Do you mind if I check that out?” I asked, hoping for some verification that I wasn’t going to be ripped off here.

“Sure, go ahead,” he slid over his card to me before continuing. “I think you know what talent you have as a manager, achieving Football League promotion for the first time in a club’s history in your first season of management is some feat. Now, I’m not going to hand over any paperwork now, obviously I don’t have any on me – I’ve just come in here for a pint and the manager of Eastleigh pops in from nowhere, you know. I’ll give you my number.”

I passed Evison my iPhone for him to type his phone number in. Everybody wants to earn as much money as possible, this wasn’t necessarily me being ‘greedy’ by hiring an agent to hold my contract talks, this was me getting a better deal for the type of work that I’m doing with my potential taken into account.
