The first month of competitive play has passed for Glasgow's Green and White, to say it was an interesting month is an understatement. With four matches that include three Champions League meetings and the first league match of the season the club had to get ready fast. With so many new faces at the club it is going to take some time for the players to gel and be on the same page. It is happening but at a slower pace.
The first competitive match of the season came in our Champions League opener against Olimpija Ljubljana, a team we faced in a friendly last season. It was a fairly routine 3-1 victory for the Bhoys as a few players made their Celtic debuts. Goals would be scored by
Patrick Roberts,
Stuart Armstrong and
Fernando Torres, who scored his first goal for the club.
A week later Celtic traveled to Slovenia for the second leg against Olimpija. Unlike the previous meeting Celtic would struggle as they held on to a 4-3 victory. For the host a later push and a sub par day by Craig Gordon were the causes of the scoreline. A rare goal off of a header by
Jozo Simunovic gave Celtic the lead, while
Moussa Dembele scored his first two goals of the year and
Fernando Torres got his second of the series.
Following the two victories over Olimpija, Celtic were drawn another Eastern European club for the third round, Mladá Boleslav of the Czech Republic. For Celtic it was a difficult day as the referee had targeted the club all evening long and penalizing them for the smallest infractions. The only score came in the sixty-eighth minute as
Moussa Dembele converted a penalty.
The final match of July was also the first of the 2017/18 Scottish Premiership season. In this opener against Rangers at Ibrox it was another classic Old Firm meeting. It would take over seventy minutes for the first goal to be scored and that came from
Scott Brown.
Fernando Torres introduced himself to Rangers fans as he scored his third goal of the month in what would be the deciding goal of the evening.
It’s no real surprise that Fernando Torres is the Dafabet Player of the Month of July, is it? After bagging 3 goals with one against Rangers, he was the obvious choice. He caused huge problems to every defense he came up against, and was able to prove age does not matter. If he can carry this form into the new season, then he could help the club shatter records once again.
Competitions
As we enter August Champions League and league matches dominate the month. Starting tomorrow Celtic will be facing Mladá Boleslav in the second leg of the third qualifying round. If Celtic hold on and win they will enter the playoff and that takes place on 15 and 22 August. If for some reason they drop to the Europa League matches take place on the 17th and 24th. On the 6th Hearts travel to Glasgow to face us, then on the 12th travel across town to face Partick. Following that day the Bhoys return home for two straight home games to end the month, Inverness CT on the 19th and Dundee on the 26th.
