At least it's in your hands going into the final day, it would have been gutting to miss out on the title even though you won, after spending the large majority of the season in top spot. Come on Feyenoord!

Feyenoord Crowned Champions Of Holland

Goals from Bilal Basacikoglu and Eljero Elia helped Feyenoord beat PEC Zwolle at the MAC3PARK Stadion on Sunday afternoon to life the Dutch title for the fifteenth time in their history. In a landmark achievement for the club under coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Feyenoord secured their first title since the turn of the millennium.

After failing to win away from home since February, the final game of the season took on added significance with the team needing to end their hoodoo on the road. The fixture had sold out in January, but there was more at stake than the fans might have hoped for even just over a month ago when Feyenoord had been in a position to go on and secure the title a little more comfortable. Whilst a draw may have been good enough, a win was the more favourable outcome if Feyenoord were to take the Eredivisie title despite having topped the table for the majority of the season.

The fans started to arrive at the stadium in the early morning and by kick off the place was rocking. The players entered the area to a rousing reception with flags raised in salute from the away end as the Legion packed out its capacity. The mood went from hope and expectation to sheer joy within 8 minutes when Nicolai Jorgensen fed Bilal Basacikoglu through on goal with the Turkish winger smashing his effort inside the PEC Zwolle keepers’ near post to give Feyenoord the lead.

The opener settled any nerves the visitors had as they took the game by the scruff of the neck although a second goal wasn’t forthcoming. The next goal of the game was scored, to the disappointment of the travelling legion by PEC Zwolle who sprang an efficient counter attack and Stefan Nijland was able to round off the move with a calm placed finish into the back of the net.

It wasn’t the scoreline that Feyenoord had wanted going into the half time break, but as the sides left the pitch on came club captain Dirk Kuyt. Returning to the club two years ago, Kuyt had said he wanted to win silverware and on the pitch he went over to the Feyenoord fans and encouraged them to make even more noise whilst putting an arm round each of his team mates to encourage them for the coming second half.

The second half was played at a much more frantic tempo with both sides wanting to claim a win either to end their season with a win or to seal their title aspirations with the silverware, and both sides went close, with Nijland hitting the post for the hosts and Marko Vejinovic for the visitors. However Feyenoord fans were sent into raptures in the first minute of stoppage time as Terence Kongolo’s floated cross found Stefan Berghuis in the penalty area with the on loan winger heading the ball back across goal to the incoming Eljero Elia who smashed a half volley past van der Hart in the PEC Zwolle goal to give Feyenoord the lead again. It led to an explosion of joy on the pitch and in the stands, with the players and staff in the Feyenoord technical area also showing their delight. The substitutes even ran onto the field of play to congratulate Elia in a dress rehearsal for the final whistle.

The fans were having a part of their own and nothing was going to stop them now as the final whistle duly came to confirm the victory and the title, with joyous scenes around the stadium, as Dirk Kuyt, a late substitution, lifted the Eredivisie title high above his head to end Feyenoord’s long wait for the trophy in what is rumoured to be his last appearance for the club.

Feyenoord: ‘Everyone Laughed’ At Dirk Kuyt’s Title Claim

Dirk Kuyt says “everyone laughed” when he said Feyenoord could win their first Dutch title since 1999 when he returned to the club two years ago. However the 36-year-old captain’s prediction came true on Sunday as his side beat PEC Zwolle 2-1 thanks to goals from Bilal Basacikoglu and Eljero Elia to secure the Eredivisie.

And on Monday, the former Liverpool forward led the parade as thousands of fans rejoiced in Rotterdam. ”This is the best moment of my career,” said Kuyt. He added that the title topped his appearances for Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League Final and the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup Final.

”I knew when I came back two years ago that we could win the championship and everyone laughed at me when I said so,” said Kuyt. ”When Feyenoord were in the top half of the league everyone used to celebrate. When we drew 1-1 with Ajax people were dancing on the table. That shouldn’t happen – you should only be satisfied when you are winning trophies.”

In the biggest two games of their season, Feyenoord ensured that the title race would go down to the wire by beating Heerenveen 2-0 which combined with Ajax’s defeat against Groningen ensured that Feyenoord went top going into the final day. On the final day, Bilal Basacikoglu’s 8th minute goal gave Feyenoord the lead they so desperately needed but when PEC Zwolle equalised before half time it looked like things were going to get tight but Eljero Elia’s 90th minute half volley sent Feyenoord fans into raptures and secured a big win for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men and sealed them a first Eredivisie title since 1999.

van Bronckhorst Signs Two Year Contract Extension

Feyenoord have today announced that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has signed a new two year contract extension, keeping him in the dug out at De Kuip until the summer of 2019. van Bronckhorst, who enjoyed two spells as a player at De Kuip has just finished his second season in charge at his former club and will now serve his third and fourth seasons in charge.

van Bronckhorst, who was capped 107 times by the Netherlands, has enjoyed great success at De Kuip since taking over from Fred Rutten, having guided Feyenoord to the KNVB Beker in the 2015/16 season. This season van Bronckhorst saw his Feyenoord side beat PSV Eindhoven 1-0 in the Johann Cruijff Schaal before guiding Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title on May 14th after beating PEC Zwolle by a 2-1 scoreline, ending Feyenoord’s 18 year long wait to be crowned Champions of the Netherlands.

Speaking to Eurosport, van Bronckhorst, declared ”I am delighted to be staying here for a further two seasons at least. I have loved every minute of my time here so far and for us to go and win two major trophies during my time is great. The Eredivisie title is one of my crowning moments of both my playing and managerial career and I really want us to try and achieve even more success here at Feyenoord.”

Nice to see you extend your contract with the club and dedicate the foreseeable future there. More trophies on the horizon for Feyenoord!
Congratulations on the league title, brilliant news and the reward you deserved at the end of a hard-fought year. The contract renewal will be the best decision the club will ever make, prepare for a lot more titles in the coming years!

Dirk Kuyt Announces Decision To Leave

Feyenoord captain Dirk Kuyt has today announced that he will leave the club at the end of his contract, which expires on June 30th. The former Liverpool and Fenerbahce forward also confirmed that he would join Spanish La Liga side Malaga on a free transfer at the expiration of his contract, stating that he had achieved everything that he had ever dreamed of at Feyenoord and that it was time for one final swansong before he thought about retiring from football.

Having returned to De Kuip in 2015 after leaving Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce SK, Kuyt went on to captain Feyenoord to the 2015/16 KNVB Beker before scoring the winning goal in the 2016 Johann Cruijff Schaal Final against PSV Eindhoven. Kuyt then captained Feyenoord to the 2016/17 Eredivisie title which was secured a little over two weeks ago thanks to a last minute 2-1 win over PEC Zwolle. Kuyt said about leaving for Malaga that ”Spain represents one last opportunity for me to go and experience somewhere new and try and play my best football somewhere else.”

When discussing his time at Feyenoord, Kuyt went on to say ”I have loved every minute of being back at this club. Going on to win the KNVB Beker and then the Eredivisie this season is a dream come true and is actually the realisation of a dream I had when I played for Feyenoord in my first spell. We have had a tremendous campaign this year and we have done something amazing and I am sad to be leaving, but happy to be at least leaving off the back of helping to take this team back to the top of the Eredivisie for the first time in nearly 20 years.”

Comments

Justice: Thanks man, should give us a bit more stability and the confidence to go and sign some younger players knowing that I’ll get the chance to work with them! Definitely more trophies on the horizon!

ScottT: Went right down to the wire but was so relieving to go and win it the way we did! I can only hope that you’re right and they start to reap the rewards of their decision!

Kuyt was really deserving of that league title so now he's achieved that I wish him the best of luck in his final few seasons in Spain.
Very sad to see him go, but at least he certainly left with a bang! He'll be missed, hopefully somebody else can fill his boots, if even partially!

2016/17 Season Review

Eredivisie

In the Eredivisie, it was joy for Feyenoord as they ended an 18 year wait for the title by beating Ajax to first place in the competition. Winning the Eredivisie meant that Feyenoord will now compete in the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League, whilst Ajax will have to try and progress from the Third Qualifying Round if they are to reach the Group Stages.

FC Utrecht will compete in the UEFA Europa League Group Stages after a terrific campaign that saw them challenging for the title before winter break before falling off the pace after the break. Roda Kerkrade will begin their Europa League campaign in the Third Qualifying Round having beaten PSV Eindhoven in the European play off, with the former Champions, beginning their campaign in the Second Qualifying Round.

At the bottom end of the table Sparta Rotterdam will be playing in the second tier next season having finished bottom of the Eredivisie, whilst N.E.C. were relegated having lost their play off against FC Eindhoven.

Jupiler League

In the Jupiler League FC Den Bosch were promoted to the Eredivisie as Champions meaning they will play in the top flight for the first time since 2005, whilst FC Eindhoven were promoted to the Eredivisie, having beaten N.E.C. in their play off, for the first time since 1978.

At the bottom of the table, Dordrecht were relegated to the third tier after a poor season.

KNVB Beker

In the showpiece event in the KNVB Beker, Ajax managed to secure the trophy thanks to Kasper Dolberg’s goal in the 22nd minute to ensure ADO den Haag’s wait for a trophy continued.

UEFA Champions League

At the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Arsenal secured their first ever European Cup or Champions League thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil which meant the Gunners were able to see of Atletico Madrid.

UEFA Europa League

In the UEFA Europa League Final at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, Manchester United were able to come from a goal down against Internazionale to win the competition thanks to goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lucas Biglia.

Comments

ScottT: Yeah, he came back and he conquered and he deserves one last chance in the Sun to try and bow out on another high.

Justice: He left with a bang and on top of the Eredivisie! Don’t worry man, we’ve got our eyes on a prolific striker at Eredivisie level ;)
