The 3-0 win over Hamburg was a huge win,, really showing your superiority. Well done!

Chapter Fourteen

The celebrations had begun once again in the city. Just weeks after celebrating promotion from 2. Bundesliga, Köln had secured the title, despite a 1-0 loss to SSV Jahn Regensburg. Their nearest rivals, Hamburger SV, had fallen to a 0-0 draw to SC Paderborn 07 at the Benteler Arena, resulting in the title celebrations beginning with a game to go.

Jorge Meré's face completely changed as we witnessed the full-time whistle sound in Paderborn. He had put the ball into his own net with seven minutes to go, which allowed Regensburg to take all three points, as they confirmed their place in the play-offs - where they would play 1. FC Nürnberg to decide whether they would join both Köln and Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga next season, relegating Nürnberg in the process.

A sense of relief overcame him, as the Spaniard led the celebrations. He seemed to prompt the supporters, as they all came racing onto the field to join in. The sheer jubilation was a sight to behold; with supporters young and old all embracing. Grown men were in tears, affected by the joy brought upon them by the club's title winning efforts.

Each player shared the moment with loved ones, with many bringing their wives and children onto the pitch. Making his way through the mass crowd, though, was Max Kofler who approached has support-camp, composed of his parents and his girlfriend, Laura. His parents were introduced to Laura shortly after they got together and they had formed a good relationship, with Max's parents approving of his decision, citing her as somebody who would make a great daughter-in-law and wife to Max, one day.

In typical fashion, the group all embraced together before they all single-handedly make their entrances onto the pitch. As they did so, Max would raise each of their arms into the air to the crowd - most of whom were on the pitch, but congregations were still present in the stands, mainly comprised of the elderly and less-able supporters, who Max was keen to share the moment with.

After spending a brief moment with his camp, he approached select supporters and shook their hands, allowing them to join in the celebrations as much as anyone else, to which each thanked him for. Returning to Laura and his parents, the group began to interact with the players and their families, with the celebrations still as prevalent as ever.

The supporters were encouraged to clear the pitch, so the title ceremony could begin. The players and families remained on the pitch, with Laura clutching my hand, closely followed by my parents who were revelling in the moment once again. They had witnessed so many triumphs throughout my career, but each one continued to make them prouder and prouder, it seemed. My mother was still wiping away tears that rolled down her cheeks, as I turned back to her and smiled.

The players and I awaited the ceremony to begin. Eventually, we would each make our way to collect our medals and get in-place to lift the title, something which we had been fighting for since the very dawning of the 2. Bundesliga campaign. Unphased by the pressure the German media brought upon us, we ensured the job was completed, pipping Hamburger SV to the post. I led the crowd, collecting my medal and beaming at it, as I did. The players followed behind, each admiring their medal.

After everyone collected their medal and was in-place for the title to be lifted, we all awaited the prompt to finally clutch the trophy. I was joined by Timo Horn at the front, as we both had a hand on the trophy, with cameras flashing from both supporters and the German press - who were keen to capture the moment for their respective newspapers. The collection of families all gathered to the side, with everyone gleaming with pride.

The utter euphoria that engulfed the ground once again, as Timo and I lifted the title, was unbelievable. I had missed this feeling - it had been six years in the making and I had briefly forgotten what it felt that. Suddenly, it all came racing back to me in those moments I held the trophy alongside my goalkeeper, "It's in safe hands!" I joked to him, as he hold the trophy aloft. He laughed, as he was soaked with champagne that was being sprayed around by select members of the squad.

I continued to join in with celebrations, before distancing myself with the group. I raced over to Laura and spoke with her. She continued to discuss her pride, before we shared a kiss. "Laura," I said. as I reached into one of the pockets of my jacket and began to lower myself to the ground, going down onto one knee, with my eyes firmly transfixed to the expression on her face. "I love you, dearly," as I pulled out a small box. Her face displayed a beaming smile, with tears streaming down her face. I opened it, revealing a beautifully-made ring, "will you marry me?"

"Yes!" She screamed with delight, "Yes!" I slid the ring onto her finger, as she briefly admired it. She paused for a second, before diving on top of my champagne-soaked body from the celebrations that proceeded. The squad, who had witnessed the moment, all raced over - before soaking us more with champagne, but neither of us cared, as we embraced in a long, passionate kiss.

BigMaguire: It certainly allowed us to gain a huge advantage, that ultimately helps us capture the title, as seen here! ;)
Must have been a wet Wiener after all those celebrations.
A great gift for Max and Laura as Koln are crowned champions, and a true love has been found.
The perfect day for everybody in Cologne at that precise moment. The team, reaping the rewards of a long season's work. The fans, whose patience after a gutting relegation has been repaid in Kofler and his squad's performances. Max and Laura, who after a testing relationship and Max's commitments to a hard job now set for a lifetime together.

The perfect day for all involved and it has all been documented wonderfully in this chapter. Bravo, Scott.

FC Magdeburg 1-3 FC Köln

FC Köln celebrated winning the Bundesliga. 2 title in May. They began the month with a 2-1 victory against SpVgg Greuther Fürth which continued their charge, but furthered Fürth's chances of facing the drop with 1. FC Magdeburg to the 3. Liga.

The celebrations would begin at the end of Effzeh's 1-0 loss against SSV Jahn Regensburg, thanks to SC Paderborn 07 holding Hamburger SV to a 0-0 draw. Max Kofler celebrated his first piece of silverware in management, after becoming head-coach in the summer, following relegation from the Bundesliga.

The triumphs meant that the final-day could be one of celebration for Köln supporters, with nothing riding on the game. The emotion of the Köln fans completely opposed the home fans of Magdeburg, with their relegation to the third tier already confirmed at the start of the month. Effzeh would capture a comfortable final day victory, with Vincent Koziello, Niklas Hauptmann and Joel Pohjanpalo all getting on the scoresheet, respectively.

FC Köln clinched the 2. Bundesliga title, five points ahead of second-placed Hamburger SV, who confirmed their promotion at the start of May with a 2-0 victory over FC Ingolstadt 04. SSV Jahn Regensburg would settle for third-place, confirming a tie with 1. FC Nürnberg in the process to determine if they would replace the Bavarian side in the top flight.

Nürnberg captured a 1-0 victory in the first-leg, at home, before comfortably defeating Regensburg 3-1 at the Continental-Arena to secure their presence in the Bundesliga next season.

1. FC Magdeburg were relegated to 3. Liga, seven points adrift of the relegation-playoff, which would have meant they avoided automatic relegation. They were accompanied by FC Erzgebirgie Aue, as their final-day defeat to SV Darmstadt 98 and SpVgg Greuther Fürth's 4-0 victory against FC St.Pauli, resulted in their relegation after three seasons in the second tier. Fürth ensured they would contest for their place in the relegation-playoff against Karlsruher SC - who finished third in 3.Liga.

The third tier side gained a huge advantage in the first-leg, thanks to goals from Marvin Pourié and Amara Condé, which gave them a 2-0 win at the Wildparkstadion in Karlsruhe. Julian Green's goal in the second minute for Fürth immediately put the pressure on in the second-leg, but Marco Thiede's 20th minute strike would prove to be vital in the end.

Green would add a further two goals to his tally for the afternoon, capturing a hat-trick, but Thiede's goal for Karlsruhe ensured they would be promoted to 2. Bundesliga on away goals, after the game finished 3-1 to the home side, leaving the game at 3-3 on aggregate.

Fortuna Düsseldorf were immediately relegated from the Bundesliga, back to the second tier, after finishing bottom with twenty-one points. They were joined by FC Augsburg, who amassed twenty-seven points, but finished three-points short of Nürnberg with a vastly inferior goal-difference. Their subsequent relegation brought an end to an eight-year stay in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund were crowned champions of Germany for the first-time since 2012 - also bringing the dominance of Bayern Munich to an end. They finished three points clear of the reigning champions, with Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FSV Mainz 05 collecting places in next season's UEFA Champions League. The latter secured their first-ever qualification for the tournament in doing so, with a remarkable season under Sandro Schwarz.

FC Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hertha Berlin all secured places in the UEFA Europa League.

In the 3. Liga, Eintracht Braunschweig and 1. FC Kaiserslautern secured immediate promotions back to 2. Bundesliga. Braunschweig finished top of the division, level on points with Kaiserslautern, but lifted the title due to their marginally better goal-difference at the end of the season. They were accompanied by Karlsruhe SC's play-off success, as the trio all secured promotion back to the second tier.

At the bottom, Hallescher FC, SV Meppen, Sportfreunde Lotte and FC Energie Cottbus were relegated to the fourth tier. Cottbus' relegation marked their continuous downfall since relegation from the Bundesliga in 2009. They previously dropped to the Regionalliga Nordost, but won the division at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, however, were unable to prevent an immediate relegation.

Justice: Absolutely throbbing wet, mate.

Maguire: The perfect afternoon for Max, and I'm sure the evening was just as enjoyable...

Jack: It truly was! I'm really pleased that you enjoyed it, as I thoroughly enjoyed writing it, seeking to join everyone's emotions together and conclude it with a beautiful moment.
A dominant season, rounded off by some good results out there. Interesting to see that Dortmund also won the Bundesliga this season. However, the top-flight appears to be as stratified as it has been for years now with two-club dominance. With a fairly strong squad at Cologne, I can see a good season in the return to the top-flight!
A great season overall and will be interstesting to see how Max and his Koln side get on in the Bundesliga. And interesting to see Borussia Dortmund winning it!
You’re engaged!? ;)
A great season for Koln and Max and a great way to cap it off in getting engaged. But now is when the real work starts, hopefully Max has it in him to keep the club up and I’m interested to see the moves he makes to ensure that!

Effzeh announce 2019/20 kits

The club are pleased to unveil their home, away and third kits for the upcoming 2019/20 campaign, as we gear up for our return to the Bundesliga.

To mark our triumphant return to the top flight, as champions, we have teamed up with Adidas. In a joint-decision, we opted to model our home-shirt design from that worn in 1978 - when the club last won the Bundesliga title. The shirt adopts an all-red design, with the traditional white Adidas stripes on either sleeve, in an attempt to create a retro-style kit, with homage to the success of '78.

Our away kit undertakes a more modern-approach, with a black and charcoal horizontal shirt. The shirt is completed with a pink trimming, which is also adopted by our sponsor for this particular kit.

Finally, the club are pleased to welcome the addition of a third-shirt, once again. It undertakes a vibrant yellow base, with white horizontal trimming.

Adidas replace Uhlsport following the conclusion of our partnership with the German sports-goods manufacturer. The multinational sportswear corporation, founded in Germany, have penned a two-year-deal with the club. Cologne-based supermarket chain REWE remain our primary sponsor this campaign.

President Werner Spinner commented at the unveiling.

Werner Spinner:
"We are pleased to announce our kits for the upcoming 2019/20 campaign. We have been in close contact with Adidas regarding our designs and we are delighted with the final product. We are a club that prides itself on tradition and history, so we believe our new home-shirt reflects those attributes perfectly, which is something we wanted to do upon consulting with Adidas."

"I am a huge admirer of the work conducted by our new manufacturers. I cannot wait to see the shirts on our players, who will wear them with pride as we enjoy the next chapter of our history together. This season promises to be one of excitement and intrigue. Everyone associated with the club cannot wait."

Jack: It was a strong season, indeed. Everyone was rather disappointed to lose against Regensburg though, as avoiding defeat would have meant Koln remained unbeaten all-season at home. I was equally as surprised to see Dortmund lift the title at the end of the season, but yes, you're correct against Dortmund and Bayern ruling the roost in Germany. We are certainly aiming to do more than simply make up the numbers and survival is a must.

Maguire: I'm interested, too! I'm looking at the new season with a sense of intrigue and excitement.

LFC: :O The plan was always to win promotion with 2. Bundesliga. Now that is complete, the work does begin, as you say. It's imperative we seek to remain in the division at the end of the season and continue to build the foundations, once again. Once they're in place, the club has a fantastic chance of achieving under an ambitious, young manager.

Note: I would like to thank Jack for his work in creating the kits for me. Once again, he has been a huge benefit!
Some lovely looking kits. Hopefully the traditional style can bring some luck and the club can do big things this year.

Joel Pohjanpalo completes Köln move

Bayer Leverkusen forward Joel Pohjanpalo has completed a permanent move to FC Köln following a successful loan spell with the club.

The Finnish international has put pen to paper on a permanent move to Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln, which will keep him at the RheinEnergieStadion until 2022. The 2. Bundesliga champions opted to trigger a clause which allowed the 24-year-old to complete a permanent move to the club, following his loan spell last season. He joins for a fee of £2,200,000.

Pohjanpalo impressed in West-Germany, scoring nine times in fourteen appearances, as Köln lifted the 2. Bundesliga title at the end of the season, finishing five points clear of second-placed Hamburger SV. The striker proved to be influential in their bid, scoring important goals - such as a late winner against 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 in April.

The Finn struggled for regular game-time at the BayArena, making just eighteen appearance across a six-year spell with the club. He initially joined on loan from Finnish giants HJK Helsinki in September 2013, before Leverkusen opted to loan him to 2. Bundesliga side VfR Aalen. He proceeded to score five goals in twenty-two appearances for the second tier side.

Pohjanpalo would extend his contract with HJK in 2014 for a further four years, but agreed to spend another two years on loan with Leverkusen, who promptly loaned him out once again to 2. Bundesliga opposition. The Finn scored eleven times in twenty-nine appearances for Fortuna Düsseldorf, but was unable to replicate his form in his second year with the club, scoring just twice.

However, Leverkusen exercised their option to permanently sign the striker, agreeing an undisclosed fee with HJK Helsinki.

Pohjanpalo was handed an opportunity by head-coach Roger Schmidt at the start of the 2016/17 campaign, coming on as a substitute against Borussia Mönchengladbach, in which he scored within a minute of coming on. He would appear as a substitute once again against Hamburger SV in the next game, proceeding to score a quick-fire hat-trick, in a 3-1 victory. The Finnish international, capped thirty-four times by his country, would go on to score another two goals across eleven appearances, as Schmidt was sacked in early-March.

Since, he managed just eight further appearances - seven of which came during the 2017/18 campaign - before joining Max Kofler's side.

Speaking to Kicker, Pohjanpalo said; "This was the only place I wanted to come and play my football. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here last season and to be part of the celebrations at the end of the season was a beautiful experience and something I wanted to be a part of again. There's a great connection between the supporters and the players, something which every players loves, myself included."

He continued, "I'm looking forward to continuing my working-relationship with the coach, who put a lot of faith in me last season. He gave me the confidence I needed to find my form, again. I wasn't particularly enjoying football and I wasn't in a great place before arriving here, but he gave me the necessary tools to help me along the way, both on and off-the-pitch. He's a great motivator and a real people's person."

Speaking about his time at Leverkusen, the Finn admitted, "I do look back on my time at Leverkusen with regrets and sadness, but that's part and parcel of being a footballer. Sometimes, for whatever reason, things don't work out. But now I'm ready to look forward and enjoy the opportunity of playing at the highest level again, with a club with the infrastructure in place to really go places."

Köln head-coach Max Kofler has called the signing an ideal "statement of intent," as he seeks to strengthen his side this summer ahead of their return to the top flight.

"I'm delighted to welcome Joel back. He was instrumental in our success last season, demonstrating his quality in-front of goal to great effect. He's a professional; he works hard and wants to give one-hundred percent every time he steps foot out onto the pitch. We need more players like that. Recruitment this season is going to be important and I believe we are signalling a statement of intent with this signing. If given the chance, Joel will perform."

"The board have been in close-contact with me over the last few weeks, discussing plans for the new season. They're on board with me and the vision I have and are willing to give me the necessary tools to bring this club forward - which is always a benefit as a manager. I have the war-chest in place to bring in the talent I need and suitably prepare for next season."

Kofler warned that his side aren't simply there to make up the numbers. "We're determined to continue the momentum from last season. We have aims in place, that far surpass simply surviving. We want to earn our place in the division and turn a few heads, we aren't there to simply make up one of the eighteen teams in the division. The business we're looking to conduct should reflect this."

LFC: I love them! I think Adidas (Jack) ;) did a great job with them. He's a good lad sometimes. Hopefully we can enjoy a successful season and upset the apple-cart a little bit.
This is fantastic news. He didn't fail me and he hasn't failed you, you won't regret signing him, especially for that price!
A great deal for one of the more important players from last seasons promotions. Hopefully he continues to perform and score important goals this year.

Chapter Fifteen

Laura continued her wedding-talk. She had purchased a collection of magazines, in which listed numerous venues and themes, as well as dresses and suits. She was adamant on the day being perfect, as if I didn't have that in mind myself. She was excited, I could understand that, but the wedding seemed to dominate day-to-day conversation, despite my best efforts to change the topic whenever possible.

She had a coffee in hand, as she skimmed through the pages of another magazine that had just come through the door. A huge stack of these wedding-magazines were now beginning to form at the bottom of the stairs. She would pause briefly, ask for my opinion and continue on, repeating the process after she had turned a couple of pages. I would simply agree with her, much to her annoyance, as she complained that I wasn't taking enough interest. "I'm sorry," I said. "This just isn't my thing... I trust you to choose what you like best. Besides, we haven't even selected a date yet."

"I'm just so excited," Laura replied. "Maybe I'm being too hasty." She cuddled up to me and I pecked her on the head, as she closed the magazine and placed it on the table, her coffee still in hand. "Let's head out tonight, go to one of the restaurants in town?" I suggested.

Laura nodded, "Yeah, I'd like that. I like the look of that new one that's just opened - Italian, I think."

"We'll go there then." I replied. "Let me go and have a look and see if I can get us booked in."

I unlocked my phone and stumbled across a text-message from Werner, the club president. For whatever reason, I was unable to hear the tone ring when I first received it, despite having the notification noise right up. Thankfully, the message was only a few minutes old. I opened it, with slight confusion. "Could you please head to the club's training ground as soon as possible. Urgent." I locked my phone again and scrambled for my coat, prompting concern from Laura. "Emergency at the club, love." I told her, "I'll be back soon."

The cold battered me, as I walked over to the car and drove to the training ground, as quickly as I could - parking in the space designated for me. I saw my assistant, Tom Cichon, also arriving. "Any idea?" He quizzed, as he proceeded to get out of his vehicle. I shook my head and frowned, "None at all."

Upon arriving inside, the club secretary, Heidi, greeted us. She was a diminutive woman, with short-black hair and wore heels to try to hide her height. "The directors are upstairs, waiting, I've been told that you can just head straight up." She smiled. I led the way up the flight of stairs, with Tom directly behind, as we headed into the directors room. We were greeted by Werner outside, who took us inside and sat us down, with a disappointed look on his face.

"Right, now that everyone is here," he said, taking his own seat, "we will get straight to the point. Unfortunately, RasenBallsport Leipzig have triggered Jorge Meré's release clause of £27,000,000 and we aren't in a position to be able to finance the wages his agent desires in order to keep him at the club. He's keen to go." Werner sighed.

"So, we must prepare for his imminent departure. They're looking to spend big this summer, since they failed to qualify for any form of European football last season."

"We have a selection of targets in-place, already." I replied, almost immediately. "We didn't necessarily plan on Jorge departing, but we accepted the risk of his release-clause, so we had plans in place in case of this event happening."

We continued discussions regarding the matter, as our Director of Football, Armin Veh, who was present in the room, wheeled a list of his own suggestions. Armin and I were always in contact with each other, as he understood that I wanted the freedom of bringing in my own players, but acted in an advisory-role to help and suggest suitable targets, alongside the scouting team.

I tabled my own suggestion. "One player we have been looking at, in close detail, is Dael Fry," I said. "He's a twenty-two year old English defender from Middlesbrough and enjoyed a good season with them in the Championship last season. Myself and the scouting team have been admirers of him for a while and believe he would be a suitable replacement. He has the ability and would almost be a like-for-like replacement."

The panel of directors all nodded, with Armin realising that I was clear in my intent for him. Yes, losing Jorge would be a huge blow, but it wasn't the end of the world. We had suitable targets in mind and knew that the money facilitated from the sale to Leipzig would generate more than enough to find an adept replacement.

The members present in the room took the opportunity to further address the financial situation. The club were generating a good sum of profit, due to the success of last season, with over £26,000,000 in the bank. Overall, everything was pleasing and the negative tone of the meeting was met with positivity by the end of it.

I returned home after a couple of hours away to Laura. She was pleased to see me come through the door again. "Everything okay?" She asked, with a tone of worry in her voice. "Of course, don't worry." I replied, "I booked the restaurant on my way home. Go and get ready, we have to be there in a couple of hours." She smiled and kissed me, wrapping her arms round me "I love you," she whispered, before she rushed off upstairs to get ready.

Jack: A bargain fee, indeed. He's been a useful option so far and I couldn't resist the opportunity to bring him in permanently. I feel he will be a real help over the next season, especially.

LFC: His goals were really important last season. Both he and Simon Terodde were able to produce a hatful last season, which aided our bid to win promotion and the league, significantly.
