Max is a man who is in complete control of proceedings, everything about him oozes confidence from how calmly he processed the news of Leipzig coming in for one of your best players in contrast to the panicky reaction from the board. Dael Fry is a classy defender and I'm looking forward to see if he can sign him up in the near future. His management of his relationship is also well-organised with work not distracting him from his relationship if but for a couple of hours.
A shame to see a highly important player leave. However that fee will be a massive income for the club and I trust Max will find a suitable replacement.
He will regret that
Dael Fry will be a perfect replacement, he has the potential to be one of the very best, and has been hailed " The next Tony Adams" , and not for no reason!
Congrats on the title win, getting engaged. And Mere is a class player, but i'm sure you'll replace him adequately.
Transfers 2019/20
Before the DFB-Pokal begins on Saturday 17th August, marking the beginning of the domestic season, let's take a look at our latest additions and departures.
Kingsley Schindler was the first signing of the summer joining from 2. Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel. The deal was agreed at the start of last season, with the Ghanaian's contract coming to an end this summer, allowing the 26-year-old to make the move to the RheinEnergieStadion on a free transfer.
He began his career with Wandsbeker TSV Concordia in 2009, before he joined Bundesliga side Hannover 96 on a free two years later. Released after just a season, Schindler joined TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, where he became an integral part to the side's second team, but was unable to breakthrough into the senior squad. After three seasons, he left to join Holstein Kiel where he won promotion at the end of the 2016/17 campaign, scoring twelve goals in thirty-five appearances.
Schindler continued his excellent form at the Millerntor-Stadion, scoring twelve times once again, as his side went on to finish third in 2. Bundesliga, but came-up short against VfL Wolfsburg in the play-offs. Last season, the winger managed nine goals in thirty-three appearances, as Kiel finished sixth.
The second signing of the summer was another pre-arranged deal, as Joel Pohjanpalo confirmed his permanent switch from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of £2,200,000. The striker played fourteen times for the club last season, scoring nine, as Köln went on to win the 2. Bundesliga title.
The Finnish international - with eight goals to his name in thirty-four appearances - is set to become an integral part to the squad, after his exploits last season made him a fan-favourite. Beginning his career in his homeland with HJK Helsinki, he scored sixteen times in fifty appearances, prior to joining Bayer Leverkusen. Enjoying loan spells with VfR Aalen and Fortuna Düsseldorf, respectively, the Finn was unable to settle into the plans of a handful of Leverkusen head-coaches, before leaving to join Effzeh.
Philipp Max will remain in the Bundesliga this season after signing for £7,500,000 from FC Augsburg, who were relegated to 2. Bundesliga last season.
The left-back was brought through the ranks at Bayern Munich, but was unable to breakthrough into the senior squad, before joining FC Schalke 04 on a free transfer in 2010. Max would make fifty-four appearances for the second side in the Regionalliga West, prior to making two appearances for the senior squad in 2013.
2. Bundesliga side Karlsruhe S.C. would agree to sign the defender on a free in the summer of 2014, where he'd make twenty-two appearances before attracting the interest of FC Augsburg the following season, who agreed a £2,800,000 fee to attain his services.
Across four seasons, Max impressed, making 115 appearances, scoring four. At the end of the 2017/18 season, the left-back became the second top assist provider, behind Thomas Müller, with twelve. Whilst he is yet to be capped at international level, the 25-year-old was part of the German team who collected a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
He is set to become our first-choice left-back, competing for the role alongside Bruno Pittón.
Sofiane Alakouch joined from French side Nimes Olympique - who were relegated from Ligue 1 last season, finishing nineteenth - for a £8,000,000 fee.
The French right-back has spent his entire club career with Nimes, prior to his move to the RheinEnergieStadion, making eighty-eight appearances over four years. Capped seven times at U21 level, Alakouch has attracted wide-spread praise across France, as many consider consider him a future French star. He made thirty-seven appearances last season, as Nimes failed to make the grade in the French top-flight, but is set to become our outstanding first-choice right-back, competing with Croatian Karlo Bartolec, who made his international debut over the summer.
Another arrival from France is Paris Saint-Germain's central defender Stanley Nsoki. The defender completes a season-long-loan from the French side and will be a rotation option.
Making his debut in a 3-0 victory against Stade Malherbe Caen in December 2017, the twice-capped U21 international spent last season with Montpellier Hérault Sport Club. The 20-year-old made thirty appearances, as they finished sixteenth in Ligue 1.
Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek became the sixth signing of the summer, as he joined from Czech First Division champions Slavia Prague for £5,500,000, with a contract running until 2023.
Coming through the youth ranks at the club, Soucek spent the 2014/15 with second-tier side Viktoria Zizkov, making fourteen appearances. He returned to the club and went on to make twenty-nine appearances for Slavia, cementing himself as a regular starter, as he scored seven times. However, he made just seven starts the next season, before joining Slovan Liberec on loan for the remainder of the season, appearing on twelve occasions.
Soucek would return to Prague and make twenty-seven appearances during the 2017/18 campaign, on top of twenty appearances last season, scoring twice. During this period, he has been capped fifteen times by the Czech national side, after appearing in various youth categories throughout his career.
The defensive-minded midfielder will compete for a place in midfield with the likes of Vincent Koziello and Salih Özcan, as we continue to institutionalise our midfield with young talent.
Striker Denis Drăguș completed a move from Romanian side Viitorul Constanța, on a four-year-deal. A fee of £4,500,000 was enough to tempt the 20-year-old to Germany after an impressive campaign in his native-country.
After progressing through the ranks at the club, originally joining in 2012, Drăguș enjoyed a monumental season, scoring eleven times in twenty-two appearances. Also capable of played as a left-winger, the young Romanian has been capped six times at U21 level, scored five times.
A £11,500,000 fee was agreed with Middlesbrough to capture English defender Dael Fry, following the departure of Jorge Meré to RasenBallsport Leipzig for £27,000,000. Fry, who has been capped eleven times at U21 level, made forty-four appearances for Boro last season as they finished eleventh in the Sky Bet Championship.
A prospect of the Boro academy, Fry made his senior debut in 2015 and went on to make a further six appearances over the course of the season, as Middlesbrough were promoted to the Premier League. Upon doing so, the defender was loaned out to Championship side Rotherham United. Making ten appearances, Fry was unable to prevent the Millers relegation, as they finished bottom.
The 22-year-old began to cement himself into the starting XI towards the back-end of the 2017/18 campaign, as Boro returned to the Championship. He went on to make thirteen appearances, before becoming an integral part to the defence at the Riverside last season.
Another central-defender was brought to the RheinEnergieStadion, as Serbian U21 international Svetozar Markovic was brought in from SuperLeague side FK Partizan Belgrade for £1,900,000 on a five-year-deal.
He made seventeen appearances last campaign, adding to the eleven he made through the 2017/18 campaign, as Partizan lifted the SuperLeague title. By far one of the standout performers, Markovic has six U21 appearances to his name and could quite easily force his way into the side, competing with new signings Dael Fry and Stanley Nsoki, as well as existing stars Rafael Czichos and Boubacar Kamara.
Mario Pasalic has completed a move away from Stamford Bridge, as he failed to make a single appearance for the Blues during his six year spell in England. Joining for £8,000,000, Pasalic joins on a deal that will run until 2023.
The 24-year-old moved to England after completing a £2,400,000 move from Hadjuk Split in 2014 - where he scored eleven times in thirty appearances from midfield in his final campaign in Croatia. Since, he has completed successive loan spells with Elche, AS Monaco, AC Milan, Spartak Moscow and Atalanta across his time with the club.
The Croatian was a regular fixture for Elche, appearing thirty-one times and scoring on three occasions, during the 2014/15 campaign. He attracted the interest of AS Monaco the following season, where he appeared sixteen times and once again, scored three times.
Still unable to stake a claim in the Chelsea side, Pasalic was loaned out to Italian side AC Milan. Scoring five times across twenty-four appearances, Pasalic enjoyed his time in Italy - prior to a move to Russia the following campaign with Spartak Moscow.
His spell with Atalanta proved to be unsuccessful, as Pasalic was unable to force his way into the starting eleven, making just four appearances across his season-long loan move, as Atalanta finished eleventh in Serie A. As a result, the Croatian was unable to add to his six caps for the senior side. However, the 24-year-old is set to compete for a place in the midfield, as he hopes to enjoy the next chapter of his career after his disappointment in England with Chelsea.
Our final signing of the window is Portuguese winger Francisco Trincão from S.C. Braga for £2,800,000. The 19-year-old joins after making ten appearances for the senior side last season, after being limited to the 'B' side beforehand and signs a five-year-deal.
Trincão was a permanent fixture in the Braga 'B' side during the 2017/18 season, in which he made thirty appearances and scored five times, prior to making his senior debut last season. Scoring once, the young winger made a keen impression on supporters, as Braga maintained a fourth-placed finish behind the usual trio of FC Porto, Sporting and Benfica in the Portuguese Premier League.
Likely to compete with Austrian midfielder Florian Kainz, Trincão has the potential to become a star with his new club, as he continues to impress at U20 level with his national side.
The total spend in the summer window lies at £52,000,000 - a club record - as we seek to prepare ourselves for a return to the top flight.
There are a number of departures to report on also, including numerous loan moves for young players. These include; Tomáš Ostrák (1. FK Pribam), Nikolas Nartey (Viborg FF), Noah Katterbach (FC Ingolstadt 04), Darko Churlinov (FK Austria Wien), Ismail Jakobs (Kapfenberger SV 1919), Dominik Becker (SKN St.Pölten) and Chris Führich (SG Dynamo Dresden).
These players have all been given season-long loan moves in order to be given regular first-team football, with each player securing a move to either a top flight or second-tier side for the upcoming season.
Benno Schmitz has also secured a loan move for the season, as he joined fellow Bundesliga side Hannover 96 until the end of the season. The 24-year-old joined from RasenBallsport Leipzig last summer, but was unable to secure regular first-team minutes.
Beginning his career with Bayern Munich, the full-back was limited to forty-four appearances with the Bayern second side in the Bavarian division, prior to joining RB Salzburg on a free in 2014. He secured regular first-team football, playing twenty-one times for the Austrian side, as they went on to win the Austrian Bundesliga, making another twenty-four appearances next season, as Salzburg captured the title once again.
Leipzig approached the defender and recruited him on a free-transfer in 2016, where he made sixteen appearances in Leipzig's debut campaign in the Bundesliga - as they went on to finish second, directly behind Schmitz's former side, Bayern Munich. However, he made just two appearances the following season, as Leizpig vastly improved their side to compete in the UEFA Champions League - prompting a sale to Köln in 2018.
Hannover are looking to improve upon their fourteenth-place finish last season and feel Schmitz will play a role in improving their leaky defence - in which conceded fifty-six times last season, the most in the division beside the two relegated sides, FC Augsburg and Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The first permanent departure is that of 22-year-old Spanish defender Jorge Meré, who departed to join RasenBallsport Leipzig, as mentioned, for his release clause of £27,000,000. Leipzig have spent big this summer, as they seek to earn their way back into European contention after a disappointing ninth-placed finish last season in the Bundesliga.
Meré began his career in his native Spain with Sporting Gijón, initially appearing for the 'B' side in the Spanish Second Division B1, making forty-seven appearances over two seasons, prior to making his senior debut in the 2014/15 season. The Spaniard went on to make four appearances that season, before consolidating his place in the side the following season, making twenty-five appearances. He would make appear thirty-one times in his final season in Spain, prompting a £6,250,000 move to Germany with Köln.
Over his two years in Germany, the U21 international - capped twenty-eight times by Spain - was a regular fixture in the side, scoring once in his debut season with Köln, as they were relegated to 2. Bundesliga. He would appear in all but two games for Köln last season, as they achieved an instant promotion back to the top-flight as champions.
The sale of the defender marginally eclipsed that paid by Bayern Munich last summer to bring full-back Jonas Hector to the club, in total costing Leipzig £26,931,000. He will likely line-up alongside both Nordi Mukiele and Ibrahima Konaté next season, as head-coach Julian Nagelsmann deploys his favoured 5-2-1-2 formation.
Jhon Córdoba has been given another opportunity out on loan following his loan spell with RB Salzburg last season. He joins Dutch side FC Utrecht until the end of the season, with Utrecht paying a substantial fee of £500,000 to attain his services for the season.
Originally rejecting the opportunity to join SK Rapid Wien on a permanent deal in the region of £3,000,000, Córdoba still has another two-years left on his deal, which is scheduled to conclude at the end of the 2020/21 season.
The striker has been unable to impress in Cologne, since joining from 1. FSV Mainz 05 for £15,000,000 in 2017. Failing to score in eighteen appearances, the striker was unable to appear throughout the first-half of last term, joining Austrian champions RB Salzburg for the remainder of the season. Appearing six times, the Colombian scored once, during a disappointing loan spell in Austria.
In a £11,000,000 move, Marcel Risse swapped Germany for England, moving to join Sean Dyche's Burnley. The 29-year-old was limited to nineteen appearances for Köln, fourteen of which came from the bench, as the midfielder ended a six-year stay in Köln after joining from Mainz in 2013 for £600,000.
Risse began his career in 2004 with Bayer Leverkusen, making his senior debut in 2007 - after initially appearing just once for the Leverkusen II side. He went on to make three appearances that season, before joining 1. FC Nürnberg part-way through the 2008/09 campaign. Making twelve appearances, he impressed to merit a further year at the club, as they won promotion to the Bundesliga. He would make a further twenty appearances, whilst at the Max-Morlock-Stadion.
The following season, Risse would join Mainz on loan - scoring twice across twenty-five appearances - which attracted the side to make the move permanent the following summer. A fee of £700,000 was agreed and Risse would go on to make a further thirty-one appearances across the next two seasons, before agreeing to join Köln back in 2. Bundesliga.
The midfielder won promotion with his new club, scoring nine times, before establishing himself as a top-flight player once again, playing twenty-nine and thirty-three times across the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns. His role lessened over the following three seasons, but Risse is fondly thought of by Effzeh supporters and will now look to impress in the Premier League with Burnley.
The final outgoing of the summer window, thus far, is striker Serhou Guirassy who joins Swiss side FC Luzern on loan until the end of the season. The Ivorian spent last season on loan with French side Amiens SC, where he scored six times over thirty-two games, in Ligue 1.
The striker originally joined Köln in 2016, signing from French side LOSC Lille, for £3,100,000, after scoring eight goals in sixteen appearances for Ligue 2 side AJ Auxerre. He would appear six times for Köln across the 2016/17 season, but failed to score, before returning the following season and netting four times across fifteen appearances - as Köln were relegated.
Yet to appear at international level for the Ivory Coast, he joins FC Luzern after they finished eighth in the Swiss Super League last season.
The departures brought in a fee of £39,500,000 - resulting in a net-spend of £12,500,000 this summer. The highest fee paid this summer was £11,500,000 to sign Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry, whilst the biggest fee recouped was £27,000,000 for Spaniard Jorge Meré.

Jack: Max is somebody who possesses a great calmness in every situation, which was seen every time he stepped foot onto the football pitch as a player, and throughout his time at the touchline. As you can see, we managed to sign Fry for a fairly decent price and a fraction of what was paid for Mere, which was ideal, as it left the ability to improve in other areas. I don't think Max would ever let his work-life come before Laura too much, as he appreciates the sacrifices she made when they got together, so is keen to ensure his focus is balanced between the two.
LFC: It was gutting to see such a talented player like Mere leave, but unfortunately there's nothing you can do when one of the money-rich clubs come calling and activate a release-clause. As such, we have been careful when negotiating contracts - ensuring we look to minimise the risk of losing someone due to a low release-clause.
Scouter: We'll see!
Maguire: Has he actually been hailed the next Tony Adams, or are you just saying that?
Justice: I don't believe so, no.
SoA: Thanks mate, really pleased to be back in the big time! I'm hoping our replacements are suitable.
A sensational set of signings, and for such low fees too! Max seems to be an absolute bargain-hunter. Now, go give the rest of the Bundesliga the sausage!
Pre-Season Report
We reflect on our preparations for the upcoming 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign, looking back on our pre-season results over the course of July and the opening two weeks of August.
We scheduled nine fixtures over July and August, travelling to Bulgaria, Denmark, Russia, USA and Venezuela, in the process.
Beginning with a trip to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, to face Levski, we saw off our Bulgarian opposition with a 2-0 victory. Louis Schaub and Niklas Hauptmann both appeared on the score-sheet in a comfortable performance to open our busy pre-season campaign.
Next, we returned to Germany and played host to French side Olympique Lyonnais. The game would be our only home fixture over the next month, as we were held to a 1-1 draw. Joel Pohjanpalo opened the scoring after twenty-five minutes and it appeared we would be heading for another victory. However, debutant Sofiane Alakouch was unable to prevent the ball ricocheting off his foot from a low-cross, as the French side equalised with six minutes to play.
We would jet-off once again following the game, travelling to Esbjerg, as we were scheduled to play the Danish Superliga side just three days later. Joel Pohjanpalo would net once again, scoring after less than a minute, prior to Johannes Geis confirming the result, netting after sixty-four minutes, to seal another 2-0 victory on the road.
A midweek test against FC Rostov awaited, as we were held to a stalemate against the Russian side. With two-hundred and ten hardy Effzeh supporters making the trip to west-Russia, we were unable to secure a further victory in a tight-affair.
Returning to Germany once again, we faced affiliates TuS Koblenz in our annual fixture. Louis Schaub, Joel Pohjanpalo and Salih Özcan provided the difference between the two sides, in a 3-0 victory. This would prepare us for our trip to North and South America to face MLS sides Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United, before Venezuelan champions, Zulia Fútbol Club.
Our trip to the US was met with excitement from locals, as we travelled to Seattle ahead of our game against the Sounders. Kingsley Schindler netted his first goal for the club after six minutes, but the hosts would equalise three minutes into first-half stoppage-time with former Lech Poznan striker Christian Gytkjær equalising. Seattle would later win the game, as Gustav Svensson's goal proved to be decisive in a 2-1 loss for our men.
Three days later, we would face Atlanta United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Anthony Modeste netted to give us the lead after nineteen minutes. The French striker was unable to play throughout the entirety of last-season, following complications in court with former side Quanjian - in which have now been resolved. Josef Martinez would equalise with twenty-minutes to go for the home side, as the game finished 1-1.
We would then swap North America for South America, upon travelling to Venezuela to face Zulia Fútbol Club. A late-show, courtesy of Simon Terodde, led the way as we went on to win 4-0. The German striker opened the scoring in the seventy-sixth minute, before converting again two minutes later. Seventeen-year-old Jan Thielmann and midfielder Salih Özcan rounded off the scoring in the eighty-seventh and ninety-third minute, respectively.
Our pre-season schedule concluded against recently-relegated fourth-tier side Sportfruende Lotte, as we returned home. Salih Özcan completed a rare hat-trick in a 5-0 win, with Marvin Obuz - also just seventeen - and Denis Drăguș also scoring in a comfortable victory to round-off pre-season in style.
Our competitive season begins on Saturday 17th August 2019 with a trip to the Eintracht-Stadion to face 2. Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig - who won the 3. Liga title last campaign - in the DFB-Pokal first round.

Maguire: He's a fantastic full-back and we're very lucky to have him in our ranks for the upcoming season. As soon as our promotion and Augsburg's relegation was confirmed, I immediately began talks. He also helps add to our domestic count, which is required at this level.
Justice: Max will be really pleased with the recruitment. He cited this season's recruitment as vital if the club wished to kick-on this season. I think the Bundesliga may have to be on-alert.
A very solid pre-season, with the team being well travelled, travelling to 3 continents, they must be ready for whats to come in the Bundesliga now after such a good pre-season.
Some incredible deals coming in there. Max seems to be focused on younger players and a good deal which is pleasing to see. Hopefully they can continue to impress after a strong pre-season after playing some talented sides. Looking forward to seeing the first year back in the top flight!

Before beginning our return to the Bundesliga, we first had to overcome Eintracht Braunschweig in the opening round of the DFB-Pokal. The hosts weren't going to be simple opposition, having won 3. Liga last term and coming into the season with just as much momentum as ourselves.
However, we comfortably put them to the sword in a 3-0 victory to progress to the second round - where we were later drawn with 2. Bundesliga side SG Dynamo Dresden.
Our return to the Bundesliga would result in an opening day defeat, however. We faced 1. FSV Mainz 05, who were fresh off-the-back of securing Champions League football last season, following a fourth-placed finish in the league last season. A double from Swedish midfielder Robin Quaison in the second-half was enough to cancel out Denis Drăgus' debut goal, as Mainz sought to continue from where they left off last season.
With just two Bundesliga fixtures to contest this month, we played hosts to VfL Wolfsburg as Die Wölfe were welcomed to the RheinEnergieStadion upon its return to the top flight. Dutch forward Wout Weghorst gave Jorge Jesus's side an early lead - striking after just nine minutes - in a close encounter.
It appeared we would be heading for a second successive lost, until substitute Joel Pohjanpalo took advantage of some poor communication between William and goalkeeper Koen Casteels from a direct-ball from Niklas Hauptmann, firing past Casteels to equalise three minutes into stoppage-time to rescue a point for us, as the game finished all-square.
RB Leipzig and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim lead the way at the top of the Bundesliga, recording back-to-back victories. 1. FSV Mainz and SV Werder Bremen concluded the top four at this early stage.
At the bottom, the only side yet to record a point is 1. FC Nürnberg, following losses against SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV, suffering a 4-1 humbling against the latter at the Volksparkstadion. They were accompanied by VfL Wolfsburg in the relegation-zone, with Borussia Mönchengladbach occupying the relegation-playoff place, as both sides sat on a point apiece.
There were two final departures before the end of the window, as two players were loaned out for the remainder of the season. The first of those is Marco Höger who joins 2. Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf. The 30-year-old spent the second half of last season with RB Salzburg, appearing fourteen times as they went on to lift the Austrian Bundesliga, alongside team-mate Jhon Córdoba. Beforehand, he was limited to just eight appearances - all as a substitute.
The second departure is another midfielder, as Johannes Geis left to join Bayer Leverkusen. The former Schalke star made twenty-three appearances last season, scoring three times, but could not be assured a place in the first-team on a regular basis this season, with the midfield significantly strengthened with the arrivals of Tomas Soucek and Mario Pasalic.
Leverkusen tempted the wantaway central-midfielder with the opportunity of playing Champions League football, as he completed a loan move until the end of the season.
Köln are scheduled to play four games in September, beginning with Eintracht Frankfurt at home. They then travel to SC Freiburg, before another home game against VfB Stuttgart. The month is concluded with a trip to Signal Iduna Park to face Borussia Dortmund.
Replies
Maguire: Despite an initial loss, I think we are ready. September will go a long-way into seeing if that testament is true or not.
LFC: The idea is to fill the squad with younger players, who have the ability to perform at the highest standard now, as well as in the future. I think we've recruited well and now we need to put that into practice. No use things looking good on paper, but not on the pitch!
Good to see Drăgus grabbing a couple of goals early on in his Koln career aswell as Pohjanpalo grabbing that late point after his permanent move. Results this early aren’t overly important but it’s good to be on the board. Hopefully we can see a league win next month with a big test against Dortmund coming up!
