Last time on Chasing CSKA, tensions rose with the news that Marcus Rashford’s transfer wouldn’t be happening due to high wage demands. Luke Hendricks discussed tactics for their upcoming Champions League Round of Sixteen tie against Juventus, whilst we had a recap of the sides friendly results.

Today, a new batch of young prospects has entered the CSKA Moscow academy with a young goalkeeper providing some real excitement. Luke and his team also review their opening leg of the tie against Juventus, with plans for the next fixture.

Being a professional footballer is almost every young boy’s dream. From a young age they have a ball at their feet aiming to become a legend at their favourite club playing at the highest level. Only a select few are able to ever achieve that dream.

Every year, a group of young players aged sixteen-eighteen enter the CSKA Moscow academy having been deemed of good enough quality at the end of their time in the junior squads. This year is no different, with Head of Youth Development, Oleg Kornaukhov, playing a key role in evaluating who is entered into the clubs under 18s side.

“I started in the role in 2018, having previously worked for the club in a youth coach role as well as for the Russian National team in the same capacity. I was fortunate enough to play over a hundred games for the club and I am very pleased to still be working here today.”

“I have been fortunate enough to have seen the progression of the likes of Vadim Karpov, Igor Titov and Denis Dvornikov all of whom are currently in the first team squad. Denis came through last season and has developed exceptionally well in such a short time frame, he’s even played in the Champions League scoring his first goal for the club in October against København.”

“We are a proud club who place a major emphasis on bringing through our own. Just look at the last few years. We have had Igor Akinfeev, the club's number one goalkeeper for almost two decades come through the academy. We have Georgy Schennikov, a Russian international and Fedor Chalov who has continued to show how talented he is this season. It is a club that brings through many talented players and gives them an opportunity. We are fortunate that Luke has come in and continued to show faith in what we do here, and that is largely down to his long time connection to the club.”

In the two and a half seasons that Luke Hendricks has been the CSKA Moscow manager, he has handed 203 league games across eight players who all graduated directly from the CSKA academy. Out of those eight players, he has handed debuts to four of them with youth development being something Luke wants to remain focused on.

“Development is what being a coach is all about. If you are not looking to come in and make players better then what are you becoming a coach for. I was very fortunate to play at some of the best academies across the world. The likes of Ajax Cape Town and Ajax themselves were incredible places to develop and I am ever thankful for the opportunities they gave me. I also had the privilege of working under some incredible coaches who helped me every day and my aim since retiring was to help pass on that knowledge to the future generations.”

“This is a club that has always had a focus on the academy, Igor came through in 2002 and has been key ever since. It shows that you can generate your own talent without needing to buy ready made stars already. By in house development it also means players grow up with your system in mind ready for your tactics and they won’t need as much time to adapt. Not enough clubs focus on the benefits of a strong academy, fortunately we are not one of them.”

“As the manager of this football team it is my duty to ensure that those traditions continue and I am able to provide the opportunity to the future stars of this club. I am beyond proud to have already given four league debuts to players coming from our academy and I will be sure to continue to give those deserving their chance to prove themselves.”

With two of last year's graduates already participating in first team training day in, day out, last year's success still gives a sense of pride to the club. This year Oleg believes there are two or three standouts.

“It’s been another good year, I believe. We have a good group of players who can come in and play a role here, with a couple having a good chance of being first team regulars in the future. I believe our brightest prospects to be Anton Gubanov and Alexandru Ungureanu.”

“Anton is already a giant, standing around 6”5 and only aged sixteen he still has room to grow. Once he fills out his frame and builds some muscle he will be a nightmare physically for any attacker. He has some good technical ability for his age and is a smart player who makes good decisions already. I am very excited about his future.”

“The brightest prospect though has to be Alexandru Ungureanu, our seventeen year old goalkeeper. Alexandru is already a player with attributes you can’t teach, great work rate and a high IQ for the game. His reflexes are also at a top tier standard already and with a bit of work, we could be seeing another incredible goalkeeper come through the CSKA Moscow academy. Again Alex is a tall guy, 6”2 and he can still grow himself, he will be commanding in his area and can communicate well with his defenders. I think he has a ton of potential.”

This week hasn’t just been important for CSKA’s future with the incoming wave of youth players. It was also the opening leg of their Round of Sixteen Knockout tie against Italian giants Juventus. The match played at Arena CSKA saw a stalemate with neither side able to see a goal. Despite a lack of goals the performance pleased Luke Hendricks and his backroom team.

“Ah Bojan, have you got that report for me mate?” Luke asked his Chief Data Analyst Bojan Mitrovic.

“Yeah, here it is for you boss.” Bojan replied as he handed over the detailed report of the match.

“As I thought then, we were brilliant.” exclaimed Luke. “Fucking brilliant. I didn’t realize they only had one shot that Alex actually had to do anything about all game and that was eleven minuets into the game!” Luke said with a beaming smile.

“They had four shots in total, three inside the first ten. Thats an incredible performance. The midfield really controlled the game and even though we moved Matko forward earlier than planned it didn’t change much and we managed to dominate it still.” added Victor Onopko who was looking through his copy of the document.

“I can’t believe we didn’t win. I thought we were the much better team on the day but looking at this it makes it even more heartbreaking. That Ivan shot, that’s what the difference was. Had it been centimeters to the right it would have been in, they were saved by the post. But look at the positives, we just kept one of Europe's biggest and best clubs goalless with them having one shot after the tenth minute. Be proud of that lads, that's testament to your guys planning ahead of the game as much as it is the lads who went out and performed. Now we go again, let's get the group ready. We can beat Juventus, I am sure of it!” claimed an excited Luke.

Before Luke and his team turn their attention to the trip to Italy, they will face three league games starting with Lokomotiv Moscow in ten days' time.

Scott:It was very annoying, he would have been a massive signing but oh well, we will get on without him.
Jack:They are all very talented players indeed. Doesn't seem as though Luke will be rushing to make any moves though.
tedbro:The move for a striker may wait until the summer if Chalov is ever sold on.
Zed:Unfortunately no Will Grigg fiasco here!
Tango:Exactly, he would be great but not good enough to destroy the finances we have built up.
Anton needs to be rushed into the starting-11 for cup games at the very least: he looks a real talent! Interesting to see the goings on behind the scenes, Luke seems to have a great relationship with his support staff, and has surrounded himself with good people. I take it that the transfer window is now open?
A good effort against Juventus and the second-leg is bound to be an exciting affair! A couple of decent looking prospects too.
This may be my favorite story on the whole site. From the cool location and interesting plot twists, I enjoy every update! Keep up the good work!

Also, Low Self Belief on Anton? Same dude, same.
this Anton guy seems to need not only training coaches, but a life coach as well

gotta lose that loser attitude
A good result against Juve with keeping them to the no away goals. Going to be a big game in Turin now but I reckon Luke has enough in his Arsenal to pull off a result
Last time on Chasing CSKA, a new set of academy graduates came into the CSKA Moscow setup. We also saw the first leg of the Champions League Round of Sixteen matchup against Italian giants Juventus.

In this episode, CSKA clash once again with Juventus in the away leg of the Champions League. We also saw the return to domestic action with CSKA aiming to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Since Luke Hendricks arrived at CSKA Moscow, he has managed to take his teams to three European knockout rounds in a row. This season was the first in which they made it to the Round of Sixteen in the Champions League. The continual improvement in his time at the club was highlighted by the progress made in Europe and Luke has never failed to shy away from how proud he is of the club's development.

“I have been known to use the word progress, a lot. It’s something that is important to me and I have made that clear. The progression we are showing in Europe is a testament to the hard work we have put in and I am very proud of the team.”

“Despite the draw in the first leg, we obviously go into the away game as massive underdogs and it’s understandable. I along with many others believed we were the better side in the first game, but that doesn’t matter anymore. Juve will be looking to show why they are favourites and we need to be at our best once again.”

Their best is something CSKA have certainly returned to in the return to domestic action, winning all three fixtures. Scoring seven and conceding none, the Russian title holders have extended their lead at the summit of the table.

A 1-0 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow was followed by 2-0 and 4-0 wins over Orenburg and Ufa respectively. Fedor Chalov’s impressive start to the season continued into the second half of the year, scoring three goals in the opening three games since the winter break and with spirits high, CSKA went into their game against Juventus with great momentum. However, Luke Hendricks' side will be without centerback Roman Yengenjev and left winger Talles Magno due to suspension and injury respectively.

“Right then boy’s we know what we have to do. A goal is enough to take us through to the quarter finals of the Champions league. We were the much better side in the opening leg and you need to take that confidence into this match. Work hard, and play the game with passion. We have the ability and we can beat them, I believe in you boys” came the pre-match message from Luke Hendricks as his team prepared to walk out onto the Allianz Stadium.

Halftime Score - Juventus 1 - 0 CSKA Moscow

“Not good enough lads. We conceded early and haven’t even troubled them since. We can’t make it easy on them boys that’s not us in the slightest. We seem to have given up and again that’s unacceptable. We are going to make some changes tactically. Matko get forward more go into your usual attack midfield role, Ivan and Voldymyr spread out slightly in that midfield and get after them. They are controlling the game today. I need more effort from all of you” were the words from Hendricks at the halftime break.

Full Time Score - Juventus 2 - 0 CSKA Moscow

Luke Hendricks:
“It’s a shame to be out. We worked hard from the very start of this competition to be in with a chance and we fully deserved to qualify for this stage of the tournament. We then played incredibly well a few weeks ago at home and probably deserved the victory if I am honest with you.”
“Today wasn’t our day but we once again showed we can compete with the big boys of Europe and that we can be proud of. The scoreline flatters them, anyone who watched today knows that and more importantly we know it. We can and will take pride in the result before turning our attention towards the league.”

“We have nine more games this season, and we need five wins from those nine games to secure the league once again. However, we are first and foremost focused on the upcoming game against Rubin Kazan and putting this disappointment behind us quickly.” said Luke in his post-match interview.

Despite falling short in what was a valiant effort, CSKA will now have a focus on the title run. With nine games to play, closest rivals Zenit St. Petersburg are now without a manager having sacked Ståle Solbakken.

Five victories is all that is needed for Luke Hendricks and his side to retain the Rosgosstrakh Chempionat Rossii.

James:Anton is an exciting prospect but he still needs some work to break into the rotation. I expect he will see some more game time next season in the easier cup games as long as he impresses when given the chance he could easily see a first team spot in the near future.
Scott:Unfortunately we failed to do much in the second leg despite having some opportunities. It was always going to be a long shot but we now need to make sure we win the league.
MidKnightDreary:That is very kind of you to say, especially with the large amount of excellent stories on here at the moment. I am glad you are enjoying and I hope you continue to enjoy.
Tango:He has some areas he needs to improve that is for sure. However, he is still young and has some potential to be very good in the future.
Gutted to see you go out of the Champions League but now time to get the head down and to get those 5 wins that are needed to secure that title ahead of Zenit.
A good effort nonetheless and more encouraging signs to suggest Moscow aren't too far away from being able to go deeper into Europe. Concentration is now firmly on the domestic campaign and getting the league title wrapped up.
A gutting exit but there isn't a doubt that Juve are way ahead of CSKA just because of footballing geography. Time to win that league now!
Can we make that an unbeatable season?

I hold no responsibility whatsoever in case I jinx it
Last time on Chasing CSKA, Juventus ended Luke Hendricks side’s hopes in the Champions League, claiming a 2-0 victory over the Russian side. Luke’s side did however build a stronger lead at the top of the table.

Today, the league title can be clinched however, will the continental hangover see CSKA blow their lead at the top of the standings?

The twelve years between 2002 and 2014 was the most successful period in CSKA Moscow’s history. Winning five Russian league titles, seven Kubok Rossii titles, six Superkubok Rossii’s and the UEFA Europa League in 2005, the Moscow based side were a force to be reckoned with.

However, a disappointing spell following that last title win in 2014 saw a barren spell until last year when Luke Hendricks guided his team to the league and cup double before adding the Superkubok before the beginning of this season. For Luke, the goal was to always add more trophies to the CSKA collection and build a side capable of winning every game possible.

“I don’t just love to win, I almost have to win. A lot of people say they are competitive and enjoy winning but for me I feel as though it is more of a necessity. I have to win. When I first joined CSKA as a player, the goal was to win titles and we did just that, I had a successful time here as a player and we won a few leagues.”

“When I got the manager role at the under 21s, my aim was to win the Under 21s league, again we managed just that. That title win was enough for me to convince the board I should be the next in charge of the first team and I am forever grateful they gave me the chance.”

“Once again, when I got the job I set out to win the league, that was the aim and although we failed to do that in the first season, we took back a spot in the Champions League, something that we haven’t lost since. In the second season we won the league and that along with the Kubok Rossii, for a split second fulfilled my need for winning.”

“This season has once again been positive, with the league title a real possibility come the end of the year. It has to be our priority to retain that now, especially following the disappointment of the Kubok Rossii and then losing to Juventus. Now we have no excuses.” commented Luke Hendricks.

Having said no excuses, Luke may have been searching for answers following his side's performances against Rubin Kazan. Having lost 2-0 against Juventus in their previous game, CSKA then lost back to back for the first time this season, losing 2-0 once again to Kazan. The result was there first in the league this season ending the shouts for a potential invincibles season.

Despite their poor result, Zenit also dropped points, only managing a draw against relegation threatened Yenisey Krasnoyarsk. The results meant CSKA had the opportunity to win the league with four good results.

That fourth game, an away match to great rivals, Spartak Moscow.

Dynamo Moscow 0 - 2 CSKA Moscow

Goals from Igor Titov and man of the match, Mário Fernandes, was enough to give CSKA Moscow the victory over their city rivals.

“We were much much better against Dynamo compared to the game against Kazan and we needed to be. We created a lot more chances and probably should have scored more than we did. It is another step in the right direction to achieving our goals once more”

CSKA Moscow 4 - 0 Rostov

Braces from Ivan Oblyakov and Magomed-Shapi Suleimanov confirmed the three points for CSKA in a dominant performance.

“Potentially our best performance of the season. They didn’t have a shot on goal and we spent the majority of the game looking to create chances against a side who were adamant on sitting back especially early on. We can be very pleased with such a large victory.”

CSKA Moscow 1-0 Orenburg

Matko Miljevic scored his tenth league goal of the season to secure the victory over Orenburg. The win sets up the possibility of CSKA claiming the league title against Spartak Moscow.

“It should have been more, a lot more. We just can’t take our chances of late and that’s a worry. But we won and that’s the important thing. We also held Orenburg to zero shots the second time in a row we have done that following the game against Rostov.

With Zenit once again dropping points against Rubin Kazan, CSKA needed a victory over Spartak Moscow to confirm back to back Russian League titles for the first time since 2012/13 and the 2013/14 seasons.

History was certainly on Luke Hendricks' side, with his team winning four of his six games against the clubs local rivals, losing just once since Luke took over. The victory would also mean CSKA secure the title away to their fiercest rivals, a feat every team dreams of.

Half-Time: Spartak Moscow 0 - 1 CSKA Moscow

“Keep it going. The lead is good but we can be better. We need to see more of the ball. They are controlling the game in the middle and despite not creating much yet, don’t be surprised if they create a good chance soon enough. We need to do a better job at closing them down and transitioning into attack. Matko, good finish, that’s what I like to see. Now it’s down to you boy’s, one more half and we are the champions.”

Full-Time: Spartak Moscow 1 - 2 CSKA Moscow

“We have been great all season, there is no doubting that and we are champions for the second year running for that reason. I am delighted with this group of players and I know how hard they have worked to maintain this level of performance all season.”

“Winning the league for the first time in seven years last year was great, but this season somehow feels even more special. Maybe it is the fact we have done it back to back, something very few sides manage. Or perhaps it is the fact we have done it here, in our biggest rivals backyards. I don’t know and I don’t really care, we need to maintain our focus and then we can celebrate at the end of the year.” commented Luke following the game.

CSKA Moscow, back to back Rosgosstrakh Chempionat Rossii.

tedbro:We managed it and thats the main thing despite the results not being what we have come to expect.
Scott:It's a shame to be out and now the league is all wrapped up attentions has to turn to going that one step further in Europe next year. Exciting times ahead.
Jack:And the league is done against the clubs biggest rivals. Luke probably would have preferred it to be against Zenit but nonetheless.
Tango:I am holding you responsible...
Certainly amplifies Luke's desire to win and proven it with a superb back to back title win. Excellent work, but is it now prime time for him to move on?
nah, it's not that bad
Massive congratulations go to Luke and the players. I can imagine this latest success will have ruffled a few further feathers in Saint Petersburg.
