SEASON 4 | BACK TO SERIE B?
After a succesful first half of the season, we were in a good position to win the league and gain promotion back to Serie B. So I began to plan for my return. I have added some experience to the squad, although Schone, Quagliarela and Gomez are all retiring at the end of the season, so I will be looking to bring in some more experienced players, as well as better quality loan's to strengthen our squad.
I decided to loan another goalkeeper from AC Milan. Plizzari has been good, but this young guy Urso looks even better. I picked him up on a 2 year loan deal, and will rotate him and Plizzari until the end of the season. Might even look at bringing Plizzari back for a 3rd stint at the club if Milan will let me have him next season.
I was hoping for an unbeaten season, but honestly we weren't playing all that convincing all season, and a loss was inevitable. Our first loss was a wake up call, and a terrible defeat.
That was our first loss in 23 games! Not a bad run..
Schone has been a quality player for us this season as he plays his last year in professional football. He picked up an injury that ruled him out for 4-6 weeks and we didn't have anyone near as good as him to bring into the midfield. So a few youngsters got some more game time.
Gutierrez has been decent for us this season. The Uruguayan was our top scorer throughout the season, so I decided to extend his loan early so he will be with us again next season. Planning ahead.
One of the games of the season was against Saleritana. 2-0 down at half-time we came back to win 3-2! Balastro with a late late winner. Our golden boy has had a poor season, and I am beginning to consider maybe he isn't the man to take us all the way to Serie A. Maybe we need to bring in a better striker. But he has been decent, he has over 100 apps for the club at just 20! He could be a real hero and icon of the club if he can perform more consistently.
We received our youth intake. Again just one player stood out to me.
Miele looks like a decent young prospect, and will get a chance in the first team, as any good young player will at Palermo under my management.
As expected we won the league, with 4 games to spare. We actually lost the game that won us the league....but it is good we achieved what was expected and will get another chance of competing in Serie B next season.
With 1 game still to play, we set the Serie C record for most points in a season!
Before our last league game we have the Serie C Super Cup Final. We played well but lost on penalties. A terrible miss from our young centre back D'Emanuele cost us the game.
So the season is over and as the champions of Serie C, our players picked up some records.
Schone was the man this season! I wish he was still playing for one more year... He got the most assists in the league and set the record for the highest average rating.
Schone also won Serie C Player of the Year! He will be missed next season, and I will be looking for more experienced players with quality like Schone to help us next season.
Gutierrez was 3rd top scorer in the league. I am hoping he can score a similar amount of goals for us in Serie B!
The Serie C Team of the Year featured 6 Palermo players:
BEST PERFORMERS
Lasse Schone
Our best player this season. 18 assists and 3 goals, he was a perfect DM. I wanted to sign him on as a coach, but he wanted the Head of Youth role, which he has terrible stats for, so he will leave the club at the end of his contract. He will always be remembered as a Palermo legend for his 1 season of brilliance.
Juan Manuel Gutierrez
The Uruguayan was our top goalscorer and would score some important goals for us in our winning season. He should be good enough again next season in Serie B. I am hoping he can really kick on and continue his goal scoring form next year.
Lorenzo Sabatini
Our right wing back was surprisingly good this season. 6 goals and 5 assists from a player with bang average stats is a decent return. I am looking to continue to play our 3-5-2 formation in Serie B next season. So he will be an important piece of the puzzle next season, unless we can find a better replacement in the market.
Dissapointing...
Livio Balastro
Like I mentioned previously, he struggled this year. Just 6 goals in 26 games, is not good enough. What should we do? Continue to show faith, and help him develop by playing him next season. Or look to bring in some better strikers and see Balastro drop to the bench?
Mario Gomez & Fabio Quagliarela.
These 2 were awful. I hope they helped my young players improve and made an impact in the dressing room.
Between them they scored 0 goals in 20 appearances.
Not what I was hoping for and luckily they didn't cost the club much money. They will not be missed as they leave at the end of the season and end their playing careers.
End of Season Awards:
Our results were not as impressive in the second half of the season. Although we won the league so I cannot complain too much.
There we have it. Serie C champions for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. Hopefully I never have to play in this league again! We smashed it this season, and with the right signings surely can stay afloat in Serie B next season.
Next season the board are expecting us to finish mid table in Serie B! So the pressure is on again. I am looking forward to the next transfer window as we will be targeting some quality signings, hopefully this time we get it right!
As always, thanks for reading!
Eoin97 - I thought they were good signings. Schone was unreal. But I enjoyed having some bigger names in the squad. Even if they didn't perform well. Will be looking to bring in more players of the same like next season.
