Goalscorers:

Southgate’s Reaction:
“It was a good outing for our boys against a top team in Spain, we maintained possession well and look very comfortable both with and without the ball and showed that we were superior in front of goal to our opponent’s”

Russia 2-0 England

Starting XI: (3-4-2-1)
01.Jordan Pickford
06.Fikayo Tomori
05.Eric Dier
04.Harry Maguire (c)
02.Reece James (Alexander-Arnold 23)

10.Ross Barkley (Alli 65)
11.Marcus Rashford (Sancho 65)
09.Tammy Abraham (Kane 65)

Goalscorers:
None

Southgate’s Reaction
“Not the result we wanted, the game was always going to an uphill battle after the early sending off which was disappointing – we were trying an alternative tactical system and we didn’t get to test it properly because of the disadvantage. The main thing was that our boys got minutes in their legs ahead of the tournament”

Group stage draw/analysis & Injury Update

Reece James who was substituted in England’s 2-0 defeat to Russia in the first half having sprained his knee ligaments when turning on the ball has been released from the national team. As a result, Kyle Walker has been called up to replace him.

England has also been notified of the teams they will be facing in the group stages of the European Championships. They will be facing 66th ranked Finland, 32nd ranked and nearby neighbours Scotland, and 11th ranked Switzerland – who England beat 2-0 back in March in a friendly in preparation for the tournament.

The three lions will be expecting qualification to be relatively simple with Switzerland being the only side who will cause an immediate through, however, the prospect of having to play Scotland at Hampden Park will give the Scots an almighty advantage.

England’s Group Stage Fixtures:
Game 1: vs Finland @ Wembley, London
Game 2: vs Scotland @ Hampden Park, Glasgow
Game 3: vs Switzerland @ Wembley, London
A very decent start for Southgate with a very, very strong England side with so much depth. To have players like Grealish and The Ox being dropped from the final squad for the Euros shows just that. Good luck, from an Irishman ;)

Euro 2020: The Group Stages

England 2-0 Finland

Starting XI: (4-2-3-1)
01.Dean Henderson
02.Trent Alexander-Arnold
06.Joe Gomez
15.Fikayo Tomori
03.Ben Chilwell
08.Jordan Henderson
10.James Maddison (Winks 57)
07.Raheem Sterling
20.Dele Alli (Barkley 82)
11.Jadon Sancho (Rashford 67)
09.Harry Kane (c)

Goalscorers:
Harry Kane (29)
Raheem Sterling (40)

Southgate’s Reaction:
“Delighted to have got our campaign started with a win, and ultimately three points on the board; with the other game in our group being a draw that immediately gives us a nice two point cushion in these early stages. We managed to put the game to bed in the first half which meant that our job in the second half of keeping it tight and controlled was much easier to execute”

Scotland 3-1 England

Starting XI: (4-2-3-1)
01.Dean Henderson
14.Kyle Walker
06.Joe Gomez
05.John Stones
12.Danny Rose
08.Jordan Henderson (Rashford 73)
04.Eric Dier
07.Raheem Sterling
21.Ross Barkley (Alli 59)
10.James Maddison (Sancho 59)
09.Harry Kane (c)

Goalscorers:
Ross Barkley (30)

Southgate’s Reaction:
“Bitterly disappointing in all honesty. All the things we did well only a matter of days ago against Finland we didn’t execute today. We didn’t take the initiative, we didn’t create any good goalscoring opportunities early doors, with so many shots going off target and we lacked any quality on the ball.

But what was most disappointing was that we conceded two goals from counter attacks today. Our decision making with and without the ball needs to be more creative and executed in a much better fashion than today, and the advantage we gained in the last game is now gone – there is no question we have to win against Switzerland to get through now”

England 3-2 Switzerland

Starting XI: (4-4-2)
01.Dean Henderson
02.Trent Alexander-Arnold
06.Joe Gomez
15.Fikayo Tomori
03.Ben Chilwell
11.Raheem Sterling (Rashford 69)
08.Jordan Henderson
20.Dele Alli (Dier 82)
07.Jadon Sancho (Rose 76)
09.Harry Kane (c)
16.Tammy Abraham

Goalscorers:
Harry Kane (50 pen, 56)
Danny Rose (77)

Southgate’s Reaction:
“Was very tough on the heart that one. Being 1-0 down at half time was disappointing but scoring the penalty early in the second half helped to lift our confidence and then Harry (Kane) scoring again minutes later to capitalise on a dodgy back pass from their player showed great awareness.

We had to adapt our system throughout the game, particularly in the opening twenty minutes they were getting past our high defensive line much too easily and beat our press too easily. But we changed our approach – focusing more on keeping solid out of possession, and when getting the ball being efficient with it and using it to hurt the opposition.

As a side we executed that well, and during the last fifteen to twenty minutes we were on top and possibly could’ve got a fourth or a fifth. But nevertheless, I’ve learnt a lot about my team today and how better we can set up and I can’t wait to get going in the knockout stages”

Suspension news:
Jordan Henderson has reached his yellow card limit and not be available for selection for England in the second round of the tournament.

Group D Table

Second Round draw

England have been drawn in the second round of the 2020 European Championships against Croatia. Croatia are currently ranked at 4th in the world, and picked up four points in the group stage after a win over Wales, a draw against Greece and a loss against Spain. This game will be played at Telia Parken in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Euro 2020: The Knockout Stages

R2: England 3-0 Croatia

Starting XI: (4-4-2)
01.Dean Henderson
02.Trent Alexander-Arnold
06.Joe Gomez
15.Fikayo Tomori
03.Ben Chilwell (Rose 83)
07.Raheem Sterling (Walker 83)
04.Eric Dier
10.James Maddison
11.Jadon Sancho (Stones 83)
16.Tammy Abraham
09.Harry Kane (c)

Goalscorers:
Jadon Sancho (18)
Harry Kane (23)
Raheem Sterling (32)

Southgate’s Reaction:
“Very pleased with how we were performed, we were clinical, we played with intent and purpose which allowed us to get a foothold in the game very early on against a strong Croatian team, and it was easily our best performance of the tournament so far.

Our control and organisation in the second half allowed us to see out the game with relative ease and as a result, led to what was a marvellous result for us”

QF: England 1-2 Belgium

Starting XI: (4-4-2)
01.Dean Henderson
02.Trent Alexander-Arnold
05.John Stones
15.Fikayo Tomori
03.Ben Chilwell (Rose 85)
07.Raheem Sterling (Wilson 90)
08.Jordan Henderson
10.James Maddison
19.Marcus Rashford
16.Tammy Abraham (Winks 74)
09.Harry Kane (c)

Goalscorers:
Harry Kane (31)

Southgate’s Reaction:
“Naturally I’m gutted that we couldn’t make it further in the competition. Yes, the first half left a lot to be desired given the fact we conceded two goals within the opening ten minutes; but we were back in the game at 2-1.

Second half we were the better side, the stats back it up; us having nine shots on goal compared their four. You could see that as not being clinical but their goalkeeper was on top form, we had a goal disallowed that in reality probably shouldn’t have been, take that at we’re 2-2 with fifteen to play and momentum would be in our favour.

I think the public has to remember we are still a work in progress, we have so many players in the team who are still young and some who are on the verge of getting in; you look at the likes of Gomez, Tomori, Abraham and Maddison who were here, and also we had options with the likes of Foden, Mount, James, McNeil, Aarons, Hudson-Odoi, Greenwood, Saka.

The future is bright, in two years that will all be better, more experience, more skill, more all-rounded footballers and people. I like to think that I will get the opportunity to continue my journey, I am contracted until 2022 but if the FA decide that they want to change that then so be it. I will prepare like I normally would in preparation of what players to scout, and put together a plan for the next two years starting with the UEFA Nations League starting in September”

Southgate appointed new Everton boss

In a spectacular turn of events, Everton has unveiled England boss Gareth Southgate as their manager ahead of the 2020/21 Premier League season. The Englishman has put pen to paper on a three-year contract, replacing the outgoing Carlo Ancelotti who after guiding Everton to 6th place last season has replaced Pep Guardiola as the new Manchester City boss.

The surprise in all this is Southgate is still under contract with the FA until the end of 2022. He will be taking on his new role whilst still retaining his current position as national team coach; however, he has confirmed that Everton will take priority.

I have a fantastic group around me at England, with numerous coaching staff and scouts who will be able to do all the necessary scouting work to keep on top of our talent here in England, so my ability to work efficiently as England manager will not be affected; neither will my work with Everton, as my coaching staff here are capable hands to work with the players whilst I’m away. Nevertheless, I am delighted and excited to be taking on this new challenge.”.

So how did this all come about? “I received a call from the chairman back in May” Southgate continued, “He invited me for a non-formal discussion regarding the managerial vacancy, and after sitting down and talking for a couple of hours asked me if that would be something I would be interested in and then asked for me to meet him again after going away and developing a proposed plan.

So we met up again, I told him How I would run things if I was to come in, what players I would plan to keep and what players I would plan to move on; the changes are made to staff, what my aims and ambitions would be for the next few years – and based off of what I said he seemed happy with it and offered me the job
”.

Southgate’s reign at Everton will begin on their current pre-season tour of Spain before taking charge of his first competitive game for the Toffees when they kick off their Premier League season on 8th August 2020 away to newly-promoted Leeds United.
Revenge against Croatia was bitter sweet, as Southgates side once again crash out of a major competition before the final. And a huge turn of events as he is named as Everton boss. Be interesting to see how he gets on in club football, which is alot more demanding with games week in week out.
Yet more disappointment for England, albeit against a side with plenty of pedigree. I hope Southgate and the boys can bounce-back from this.

Everton though, interesting!
@Eoin97: After Croatia the positivity and hope was there, such a shame about the Belgium game, created enough chances but didn't take them.

@ScottT: Yes, disappointing but the team is still young and will just get better and better. Yes, Everton shall be interesting!

New Staff

Some nice signings in there by both Southgate and pre-Southgate. Interested to see how the young prospect turns out!
A very impressive pre-season campaign. I think the standout signing from Southgate has to be Hlozek who comes with plenty of promise. Zinho Vanheusden is an excellent signing from whoever conducted that piece of business too!
Love the idea for this. Cracking story idea, great plot twist turning to club management after the Euros and will definitely be following. Great structure and writing too; easy to follow and not long drawn out or boring. Keep us updated.
@Eoin97: Yes, very happy with recruitment, lets hope they all succeed.

ScottT: We have been blessed with the work of our DoF who acted in the transition period between Ancelotti's departure and Southgate's arrival!

BoxToBoxBlogger: Thanks man. It wasn't planned, just had an interview approach come up just before the Euros which I delayed saying I'll take over after the Euros. Hope you continue to enjoy it mate!

League Table

Southgate’s Reaction:
Back in the dugout at club level for the first time since 2009 was a strange but exciting experience for me. It wasn’t the easiest of starts for us, having to face both of the Manchester sides in our first four league matches but that’s the luck of the draw.

The two defeats against the big two were games where I felt we can hold our heads high, we gave both teams a very good run for their money and especially against Manchester United we were unlucky not to get at least a point with one of our goals being disallowed. But we didn’t roll over and we showed that we can compete with the best which is positive for where we want to be.

The Leeds and Sheffield United matches were a different challenge for us, Leeds were a strong side who performed well and the stats show how they probably were the better side in terms of chance creation, but nevertheless we were clinical in that game and took the chances we created. Sheffield United was a game where we probably should’ve been more clinical – yes it was a very even game and a draw was probably a fair result, but given our creation of 3 clear cut chances and not taking any of them was disappointing.
