Great work so far this season!
A definite improvement. An earlier departure against Luton in the cup is a slight disappointment though.
A good month but sad to see you drop out of the cup, love a good cup run!
@Eoin97: Cheers mate!

@ScottT: Yeah, was a shame but I’ll be taking the FA Cup more seriously than the League Cup.

@Griffo: Cheers mate, will hopefully try and do something in the FA Cup!

October & November 2020 Update

Having had an unbeaten September which saw them rise to 9th in the Premier League table, Everton kicked off October with the visit of Liverpool in the first Merseyside derby of the 2020/21 season, but Everton’s run was broken after first-half goals from Dybala and Salah put the game in their favour before a late goal from a corner.

After international duty had finished, club action returned to the Toffees as they travelled to Wolverhampton to face an in-form Wolves side. But even a goal from substitute Demarai Gray wasn’t enough as they fell to a 3-1 defeat.

Next up was a home fixture against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side, where Real Madrid loanee Mariano was handed his first league start of the season ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin who was dropped to the bench. He repaid Southgate’s trust by scoring a hat-trick within the first 55 minutes of the game – that being enough to secure a 3-2 victory for the Toffees.

Everton then headed to the capital to take on newly-promoted Fulham, where Mariano yet again proved to be the talisman as he picked up a further two goals in the first half to give Southgate’s men an easy three points on the road.

The visit of the final promoted side from the Championship in the form of ex-European Cup champions Nottingham Forest came next, where Everton put in arguably their best performance of the season as goals each from centre-back duo Vanheusden and van Drongelen get them off to a strong start before Calvert-Lewin with a poachers finish and a Lucas Digne free-kick wrapped up a 4-0 thrashing.

With the confidence of back to back wins, Southgate’s men headed to Leicester City where goals from Adam Hlozek and Andre Gomes were enough to see Everton hold on to a 2-1 victory to make it three wins on the bounce.

Everton ended the month by hosting Southampton, where a late goal from substitute Demarai Gray was enough to see the Toffees secure a 1-0 victory.

League Table

A great run of results following those two initial losses. The victory against Leicester could prove to be decisive if Southgate wants to guide the Toffees back into Europe.
Always sucks losing to the rivals but in a great position on the league table!
In a very promising position, with the UCL places within reach if a few results go Southgate`s way!
A great end after a tough start to the month. European potions are looking good at this early stage of the season!
Smashing run of form to bring you to within touching distance of the big-money positions! Now to carry it on!
@ScottT: Very pleasing results, you're right there.

@Griffo: Yeah that was a sucker punch!

@Eoin97: They are certainly getting closer, keeping level headed for now.

@TheLFCFan: Yeah we had a good recovery and appear to be on the up now.

@Justice: Cheers Justice, amazed it's gone on this long but we won't slow down anytime soon.

Apologises for the slower updates the last week or so, non-contact university work has had to take priority unfortunately. Hopefully next update out tomorrow!

England’s UEFA Nation’s League Results: October & November 2020

Having started their UEFA Nation’s League campaign last month with a win and a draw to give them a solid start, Southgate’s side headed into their next doubleheader in October as they prepared for travels to both Iceland and Denmark.

First-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling got England on their way before a Harry Kane penalty and a late own goal saw England fly past Iceland.

Their second trip of the month saw them take on Denmark who they beat 6-1 at Wembley only a month ago, although this time things would be much tighter. Two goals in the opening six minutes for centre-back Fikayo Tomori gave England the early lead before Denmark pulled a goal back just before half time. Yet Southgate’s men held on during the second half to secure the three points.

They then welcomed Spain to Wembley at the start of November, in which a seven-goal thriller took place, where goals from Raheem Sterling and an own goal saw them come back from behind twice to make it 2-2 at half time. But two goals midway through the second half for Spain meant that Harry Kane’s late penalty would only be a consolation.

The final game saw the visit of Iceland, where England handed a first senior start to Bukayo Saka; a first-half goal from Harry Kane saw the Three Lions take a 1-0 lead at the break before a brace from Tammy Abraham in the opening fifteen minutes of the half saw England secure three points, albeit this was not enough to see them qualify to go further as Spain pipped them to the post.

Group Table

Southgate’s reaction:
Overall, I felt as though the campaign went well in terms of results; yes the loss to Spain was gutting, but they were the better side on the night and fully deserved it. But in terms of our aims of blooding in some new players, as we continue to make changes to our team ahead of the 2022 World Cup, it was positive as the likes of Saka and Foden got some game time.

The pool of players is full of talented individuals and I’m sure that many more will get the opportunity in an England shirt as we look for the formula to get long term success for this nation, especially after the disappointments of Euro 2020.
I truly don't know much about this competition, how well is it received by the fans?
Good work but unlucky against Spain. Nice to see the likes of James, Foden and Saka being bled into the squad.
Unfortunate to lose to Spain at home having done so well to get a point in the away game. Unlucky but as Southgate said, it was all about getting some new players in ahead of 2022.
