The Julian Nagelsmann Philosophy
The tactical mastermind of the modern era game
Julian Nagelsmann will have full influence over the tactics that Borussia Dortmund will deploy over the course of his reign as the main man. He is one of the best students of the modern game and should have this Dortmund side playing some seriously attractive but effective football. Nagelsmann is a believer in two main football tactic philosophies, vertical tiki-taka and gegenpressing. He aims to create a superior tactic that infiltrates both to full effect, while at the same time providing some of the most attractive football the modern era of football has the privilege of seeing.
The BVB Tactical Files 2019/20 1.0
It all starts with the base, like the dough of a pizza before you add the cheese and tomato sauce, with the formations. The main formation Dortmund will be deploying under the tactical wiz-kid Nagelsmann will be the 5-4-1 combination. It firstly encompasses three physical centre-backs all in unison at the back in front of a sweeper keeper. The centre-back in the middle of the three will be used as a sweeper, with him sitting slightly off-line with the other two centre-backs to take lose balls that arrive over the defensive line of the other two centre-backs. This will be key as it will prevent the back 3 from getting caught out on most occasions. When he retains the ball, he will have many different options to pass to, with two marauding wing-backs on either side and the two centre-backs slightly ahead of him, and also can opt to pass it long to the midfield or attacking players on display. The sweeper keepers job is pretty self-explanatory just by their roles name. His main duty will be too assist the sweeper in retaining possession of loose balls, but also to help in initiating counter-attacking moves through long-throws to the pacey wing-backs or into the more defensive of the midfielders, or just to the centre-back trio if things are very tight. The other two centre-backs either side of the sweepers job will be simple, just get the ball back from the opposition by any means necessary, and then lay it off to a teammate. Simple but effective is the name of the game when it comes to defending competently for any Nagelsmann side.
The two menacing wing-backs will be given arguably the most important job on the whole team when it comes to attacking influence. Deployed quite high, they will be looking to get forward whenever possible and make overlapping runs past the two wingers to either receive the ball and cross into the one striker up front, or assist the wingers by looking for a one-two. They are such a vital keg in Nagelsmann`s house of barrels as without them linking attack to defence, the whole tactic just won`t be effective or attractive looking for that matter.
In the centre of the park Nagelsmann will be deploying two pivots, with one sitting slightly behind the other to cover, and the one who is sitting higher will be looking to receive a pass between the opposition lines from their more defensive midfield brethren. Both midfielders will need to be work-horses and be incredibly competent in both attack and defence, as they will sit right in the middle of the spine of the team, protecting the three at the back while also supporting and assisting the attacking trio further up the pitch and the freebooting wing-backs.
Finally, up top Nagelsmann will have an attacking trio with two inverted wingers and a pressing forward. The two inverted wingers jobs will be to run towards goal at the opposition defenders, to either create a chance with a bit of magic for the pressing forward, lay it off to the overlapping wing-backs and to also try and get on the scoresheet if possible. These two players will need to be the most creative outlets of Nagelsmann`s side, as if they flair and vision, they won`t suit the role, which will nerf the tactic deployed. The pressing forwards job will be quite simplistic, to press the living daylights out of the opposition goalkeeper and defenders when not in possession to try and squash them into a small area, possibly forcing a mistake out of them, and to stay centrally and look to get on the end of a cross, long pass or through ball from the players behind him, and to ultimately get on the scoresheet in the process.
