Tyrone Henry: A Changing Attitude

Our start to the season began with an emphatic piece of silverware as we demolished the Premier League champions Liverpool 5-1 at Wembley in the Community Shield match. Medina and Diangana both scored on their debuts for the club in this game

From there, we began the Premier League season against newly promoted Sheffield United at The Den, with Troy Parrott - on loan for another season - scored the only goal of the game from a spot-kick.

The Docker’s Derby came next against West Ham and we were held right at the death with a late Jarrod Bowen finish in the 93rd minute to stop us from taking all three points back home.

Another newly promoted team was next at The Den as Brentford held us to a 2-2 draw with both of our goals coming in the final 10 minutes from Grady Diangana and Troy Parrott.

The first month of the season finished with another three points being snatched away from us at the death with yet another 93rd equaliser from our opponents as Arsenal’s Andrea Papetti cancelled out Troy Parrott’s earlier opener.

Throughout August, we let many youth players out on loan, but also sold Clarke Nesbitt for £12.5million to Spurs after forcing his way to North London.

September began with another tough match against Manchester United who took an early lead from Zaniolo. However, our Northern Irish midfielder Michael McMahon equalised just after half-time to secure a point.

Our debut in the newly formatted Europa League began dramatically with a late Rekeem Harper header winning us our first match in Group A in the 94th minute of the match.

We also advanced in the League Cup as we faced Sheffield United for the second time in two months, beating them on penalties at The Den to go through to the 4th Round.

We capped off our September with a return to winning ways in the league, defeating Crystal Palace in a comfortable 2-0 win with Parrott scoring both of our goals.

The end of the first two months leaves us in a familiar midtable position, currently joining only two teams who have still yet to be beaten in the Premier League. We have a game in hand against Everton which should push us up to 6th if we are able to get it right.

At the top, Liverpool won all seven of their Premier League fixtures from the opening day as they take a two-point lead over Chelsea at the top.

Meanwhile, a couple of surprise entries into the Champions League spots are Eddie Howe’s Leeds United and Dean Smith’s Aston Villa who have both done very well in the opening games.

Manchester United started off badly but have already begun their recovery up the table despite only 1 win in their last 5. However, it is Arsenal - who finished 5th last season - who are really struggling in 16th place after 7 games. It is still early days, but the warning signs are there for Mikel Arteta’s team.

At the bottom are 2 of the 3 newly promoted sides with Brentford and Burnley in the relegation zone, also joined by Fulham.

In the Europa League, our campaign started well with a 2-1 win in a tough match against PSV. However, we sit one point behind Schalke, who beat Istanbul Basaksehir in their opening match of the competition.

A satisfactory start there for sure. Some late moments has earnt and lost you some points but unbeaten and with a game in hand you will certainly take that. Exciting start in the Europa League too, in a tough group but one you could feel slightly more comfortable in with that PSV win.

Beautiful graphics once again.
I agree with Seb that Velickovic is a bit undersized, but there's no doubting the boy has an abundance of talent. It's been a solid start to the season, and I've personally always found it more difficult to face the promoted teams early in the season, rather than after say 10-12 games. Early on they actually believe they belong in the league, so they're up for it, but they need to be battered a few times before you face them imo! I'm going to go out on a limb and predict a top-4 finish for Millwall this season, and that's purely because Parrott already has 6 goals for the season, and we're only through 9 games so far.

Great start to the Europa campaign too :D
What a great time to return after a few days away! An FA Cup win followed by Community Shield success with a good investment over the summer, the return of Parrott (again!) and a pleasing start to life in Europe alongside a good start domestically. Not bad ;)

25th October 2024
In a landmark day for the football club, Tyrone Henry has agreed his first five-year contract with Millwall.

The news of the new deal comes five months after Millwall’s FA Cup victory, followed by their Community Shield win in August.

Millwall currently sit in 4th place in the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Wolves last Saturday.

“At the end of the season we will be laying out a club roadmap as we have enough confidence to really begin to push on and venture forward towards further successes.” Henry said to the media at Calmont Road, Millwall’s training ground.

“We have seen rapid improvements in the playing squad, through transfers and development, advancements in the training and youth facilities as well as clear progression of on-the-pitch achievements.

“Myself, the coaches and the board will be outlining our goals by the end of this season depending on how the rest of this season goes with everyone. It’s a very exciting time to be Millwall.”

Henry took over first-team affairs following the departure of Gary Rowett in July 2020 after five years as youth manager at the club.

He achieved promotion to the Premier League via the Play-Offs in Millwall’s first return to the top-flight since 1988 and has gradually consolidated the Lions’ spot in the division for three seasons in a row.

A lot of focus was paid on domestic players earlier in his reign at The Den, but over the past couple of transfer windows, that has shifted with no less than five non-British/Irish players in the first-team squad.

Henry’s new deal gives him a touted £115,000 per week, making him the 3rd highest-paid manager in the Premier League behind Diego Simeone and Jurgen Klopp. His contract now runs out in June 2029.

Seb: Better late than never ;) Thank you!
James: Yeah, the promoted teams have proven difficult. We can only hope for top 4, but that does come down to how Parrott does!
Scott: What a difference a few days makes :D

October began with a fantastic 3-1 away win against Schalke with a Troy Parrott brace helping us along the way to a crucial three points in our second Europa League tie.

Parrott’s goalscoring form continued into the Premier League as he bagged the only goal of the game in the 90th minute to win all three points against strugglers Fulham.

Troy Parrott’s 6th goal in 4 games came against Wolves as he was yet again the only goalscorer on the pitch as he converted a penalty to temporarily send us into the top four in the Premier League.

We returned to European action with our first game at The Den in the Europa League and it was a thriller as we smashed Istanbul Basaksehir 4-0 with a Grady Diangana brace, Michael McMahon and Joe Aribo all getting in on the act.

We suffered our first defeat of the season at the hands of 3rd placed Aston Villa at home as an early Jack Grealish goal put us to bed for the remainder of the match.

Our month ended with us going back to winning ways thanks to a Grady Diangana brace seeing us through the 5th Round of the League Cup as we beat Championship promotion challengers Birmingham City.

Following a defeat in our previous Premier League match, we started November with a Premier League win over Brighton as Troy Parrott got his name back on the scoresheet in the 86th minute to guarantee us all three points.

The return fixture against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Europa League ended up with the exact same result in Turkey with McMahon, Pearson, Velickovic and Danny Ross all scoring to win 4-0 at the Fatih Terim Stadium.

A goalless draw followed against Leeds United in the Premier League as Joe Cleary kept his 6th clean sheet of the season out of 11 games.

Perhaps the shock result so far this season came as we beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium with our academy graduate Ronald Mereles scoring the opener, followed up by Artur just after half-time. Despite a Ben Pearson sending off, City could only score at the death with a Divock Origi 95th minute consolation effort.

Our month ended with our 5th win out of 5 in the Europa League Group Stages, ensuring our qualification to the knockout rounds with a 2-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

We bettered our position in the table by one place at the end of November, laying 3 points outside the top four with two games in hand. We are in a very strong position comparatively with every other top four challenger.

The same style of play in our system of not scoring many, but conceding even less has continued into this season as we are the third-lowest goalscorers in the division, but also the lowest conceders of goals, joint with 2nd placed Chelsea on 7 goals conceded.

At the top, Liverpool continue to fly with 13 wins out of 14, now taking a five-point lead over Chelsea in 2nd place.

The surprising top 4 challengers Aston Villa and Leeds United remain in the Champions League spots which they entered at the end of September. However, Leeds’ form has been looking rather patchy of late so they could drop out soon.

Bournemouth are another side looking to secure European qualification as they sit in 6th place, two points behind Leeds United.

Manchester City and Arsenal are lurking around midtable, just behind us by 3 and 4 points respectively as both teams have either dropped off or are now beginning to seek some form of recovery.

At the bottom, West Ham are the new entrants into the relegation zone following some horrible form throughout the past two months which has seen the previous occupiers Fulham fly into 13th place.

In Europe, we have qualified for the knockout rounds of the competition alongside PSV Eindhoven. With 6 points separating us from 2nd place, we have qualified for the Second Knockout Round, whereas PSV will enter into the First Knockout Round.

Absolutely walked that group, which I have to admit am impressed by. On paper it wasn't an easy one at all but you have really proven yourself in Europe now. In the league, things are going very well and Parrott seems to be in great form this season. Might need to find that money to buy him sooner rather than later as I don't see Spurs allowing him out on loan if he continues like this.
You are on FIRE! Parrott has been the striker that I've been hoping for him to be, and it's firing you all the way up the table [provided you win the games in hand of course] and extending our European tour too! Best get a cash collection going at home games and online, because you're gonna need a hell of a lot of money to sign him permanently ;) Either that, or you can go full Risdale...

Delighted with the start of this season, and Tyrone is well worth the contract extension he recently penned.
Looking very good. I'm particularly impressed with how Millwall have coasted through in the Europa League in what appeared to be a difficult group on paper with sides of good pedigree in PSV and Schalke and Basaksehir obviously starting to assert themselves as a more established European side too.

An aside, I love the subtle changes to the graphics. Very clean.

I can't believe Origi is at City too!

8th January 2025
Mahlon Romeo’s nine-year spell at Millwall has come to an end today as he joins İstanbul Başakşehir for a £13.5million fee.

The right-back position has been an area that Millwall have not had to replace at any point during Tyrone Henry’s stay with Romeo and Hayden Muller covering the role. However, the money seemed too good to turn down for the 29-year-old.

Romeo joined Millwall from Gillingham in League One on a free transfer and has gone on to make a total of 308 appearances for the Lions in that time, becoming a cult hero at The Den.

Since winning promotion, Romeo has featured in five Premier League Team of the Week selections, proving his adaptability to a higher level of the game after rising up the tiers of the game, starting out in the 6th tier following his release from Arsenal.

“Mahlon’s time with us has been a delight. He’s one of the best professionals that I have had the pleasure to work with and I am glad that we have been able to taste success together at this club.” said his manager Tyrone Henry. “I wish him all the best in Turkey and for the rest of his career.”

Romeo’s departure leaves Hayden Muller as the club’s only natural option in the position, with Ross McCrorie also able to drop into the role from his natural central midfielder position. It is unknown whether Millwall will look for a new right-back in this window.

This season has seen a heavy loss of the promotion-winning team under Henry, having already sold Jed Wallace to Celtic in the summer.

Seb: Quite surprised by the quality of the opponents in Europe, which as you say, seemed considerable. I agree, it's certainly Parrott's best start to date and there will be Spurs' eyes watching on ready for next summer.
James: I think it's time to head down to the banking district and see if there's any interest free loans for January :P
Scott: It was surprisingly easy in Europe, absolutely! Thanks for the graphics appreciation, I feel it looks a little bit neater.
It's always a shame to see players like Romeo depart the club after such a lengthy spell with the club. However with success comes decisions and they can't always be easy. I think all parties will be happy with how this deal has worked out and I'm sure the supporters will be understanding in spite of their disappointment.

13th January 2025
Millwall have made their first first-team addition of the winter transfer window by signing Igor Gomes from São Paulo for an initial £15million.

The Brazilian star had an incredible year in the Série A as he scored 15 goals and assisted 11 goals in 45 league appearances, helping his side edge into the Copa Libertadores for this season.

With calls for Brazil’s national team manager Cuca to bring Gomes into the fold, Millwall have signed their man at the peak of his career.

The signing of a number 10 midfielder has caused many to re-evaluate Tyrone Henry’s tactical plans as his side usually operate without a named attacking midfielder, much rather choosing to play a 4-1-4-1 formation with a defensive midfielder covering the back four.

Gomes’ confirmation was only the third signing of January for Millwall, though. On the first day of the window, they agreed deals for Australian attacking midfielder Ma Chung Wai to join from Melbourne Victory for £1.8million, as well as Paraguayan midfielder Christian Núñez on a free transfer.

Chung Wai scored 5 and assisted 5 in 19 matches in the A-League last season as his side finished in 3rd place.

Neither player has been granted a work permit by the UK authorities, which could suggest that Millwall will look to loan the players out for short-term development.

Scott: At the pace we're rising at, the time had to come where I assessed who was going to be on their way in the next 12 months and unfortunately by no fault of his own, Mahlon was one of those people.
Oooooh, Romeo gone :( Seems like Tyrone might feel threatened by anyone that's spend a considerable time at the club, so he's shifting them out slowly so his authority is never questioned! I agree with the fans that it appears a change in tactics is on the way, and with the club performing the way they are atm: it says [to me at least] that there's a firm belief in the current squad that they can get a top-3 or top-4 finish with a couple of additions. Gomes is quite impressive, as is Ma Chung Wai, who could be a very good addition if he's able to get his work permit any time soon.
Quite the statement of intent with that signing I would say! An excellent goal contribution rate which will certainly benefit to the Millwall attack. Troy Parrott will only receive even better service now.

Manchester City have paid Millwall a transfer fee £50million for Axel Tuanzebe’s services.

The deal is only the 4th largest sum of the transfer window. However, it is the largest transfer fee that Millwall have received in their history - doubling the £25million departure of Scott McKenna to West Brom in the summer.

Tuanzebe joined Millwall in a £16million transfer in the summer of 2023 and has gone on to make 63 appearances in all competitions for the Lions during his stay, lifting the FA Cup and Community Shield whilst qualifying for Europe in the same season.

With Jonathan Tah’s request to leave the Etihad earlier in the window, it is no surprise that Man City have acted quickly to seal the £50M deal within a few days of the offer being made to Millwall.

Millwall currently sit 10 points ahead of City in the Premier League table as they host a Champions League spot for one of the first times in their history.

It is rumoured that Millwall will be looking abroad for a replacement for Tuanzebe as Internazionale’s Lyanco and Juventus’ Tommy St. Jago both being names carrying particular weight in the media.

Millwall academy graduate Ben Thompson has also ended his 13-year stay at The Den as he joins Norwich City in a £12.75million after the club decided to cash in with only a year left on his contract.

Thompson made 289 appearances for the Lions over the long period at the club.

James: Henry's just playing it as a dictator ;) The squad seem in great spirits even despite the departure of Romeo, looking forward to seeing what Gomes brings.
Scott: It's a decent chunk out of the budget for sure! Hopefully he reflects that out on the field similar to how he did in Brazil.
